The classiest crazy bullshit magic Half-Elf, you'll ever meet.
Legend Of Kartia(The Word of Fate)/Rebus

Wait hold on, whats up with that title?

Well you see, the game was released with different titles for each region.
In Japan, it's "Rebus".
In the Us it's "Kartia - The Word of Fate".
and since Europe got shafted it's just plain "Kartia".

Hold on, Europe got shafted?

Well comparatively speaking ofcourse, the game known as "Legend of Kartia" from now on, got released in the US 5 months after it got released in Japan. Europe however had to wait a staggering 16 months.

I just remembered that I don't actually have a clue about what this game is

Legend of Kartia is a Strategy rpg for the Playstation 1 akin to Final Fantasy Tactics. It was released in 1998. Published and developed by Atlus. What sets this game apart is the character designer Yoshitaka Amano. Whose work you might recognize from Final Fantasy 5 and 6. It also features really good music. But the game doesn't reach the same depth FFT did. It's mechanics are simpler, and over all the game is easier for it. The characters are well written, atleast from what vague memories I have of it.

The LP

This is gonna be a blind run. Last time I played and completed this game was when I was about 10 years old. So ofcourse the nostalgia glasses is sitting firmly on my face(On top of my regular glasses, it's kind of a bother really). That won't keep me from making fun of the game. Not that it deserves it, but that's part of the LP charm.(Okey maybe it does a little). Expect lots of reading. By the time I'm done here I've written more than certain game writers for other terrible games. But that's neither here nor there. I'm aiming to be informational first, and entertaining second.

So what is the game about then?

The story is in the games own words, an epic drama. Basically what this means is, I don't have a clue.
.
.
I kid. The story is seperated equally into two parts. It's 28 chapters long in total, and each character gets 14 each. Their story is wrapped up in their own part of the world, with their own friends and foes and things. But they do cross paths from time to time.

The game is set in the world of Rebus, a world, that with the power of Kartia has never known conflict or war. Kartia itself is an all powerful creational force invoked through Kartia cards. Basically without going into specifics you sacrifice pieces of paper to obtain something "else". "Else" can be pretty much anything from swords to coffee to physics defying armor. Kind of hard to imagine conflict in a world, where it is literally easier to create food and eat it, than stealing it but there you have it.

The Rules that apply to you
No spoilers please. Ha, like anyone even knows of this game. Okey, let's not be hipster here.
Don't make me write more rules.

Characters will be in various smileys untilCharacter names will be bolded/if I figure out something better Portraits.
My comments will be written in italics.
Camera and scene actions will be bolded.

:siren:Episodes is how each chapter fits into the whole story chronologically. It will make sense later, I promise.:siren:

Intro

:siren:MUSIC: Intro music :siren:

There is quite nothing like and old pixelated logo start off an LP

The intro start off with Kartia cards, how fitting. But don't let that fool you the intro can be safely ignored, since it's one of those "Let's do shots of random stuff that is gonna be important in the game" intros that Japan really, really love.

This guy is a Phantom, which we will see later, and talk about more in depht much later.

No, it's not an amulet, it's actually a Kartia, although a very special Kartia. Which there are a surprising number off.

Listen this is gonna drag on if I have to give you guys an image of every little thing, so let me help you, help me, by cutting out the filler okey? MONTAGE TIME!

Finally!

:siren:MUSIC: This plays through the text scrawl :siren:

No! A text scrawl :(. The poor quality is due to me messing with textures and it's only for the text crawl. Here I'll transcribe it.

Kartia...
The card which can create anything.
People have lived with Kartia since the beginning of time.
The divine letters release the power of Kartia...
Kartia fire lights up the dark,
Kartia wind flows through the sea,
Kartia earth laid over a bed of seeds,
Kartia water nurtured the plants.
Thus people called this world Rebus.
It was the world of Kartia civilization...
For thousands of years, this world never knew of war.
It was the world of peace and security...
But those beautiful days began to corrupt the people.
Chaos crept into this world.

When people took the power of Kartia for granted,
the destruction of Rebus began.
This is the story of two individuals, who lived
in this chaotic era...
Toxa, the Free Knight.
Nothing kept him from pursuing his dreams.
Lacryma, the Shrine Warrior.
Her father was a hero.
She led a life bound by law.
Whoever happens to witness this epic drama will
experience all the joys and sorrows
that affect their lives...

We'll begin with Toxa, until we hit the first crossing point, where I'll change over to Lacryma.

Wait, hold on 1034? According to the text crawl Rebus is thousands of years old. I don't really have an explanation for this, except that the text scrawl is wrong.

Pentagram Cathedral? Yeah that's not evil AT all.

:siren:MUSIC: Expectation :siren:

:"I cannot foresee our future... I sense something terrible will happen..."

What is implied here is that Mona is half elf, half woman

Mona's Mother :"It is the Forbidden Kartia that should be hidden away... This is what humans call an "Original".
:"Forbidden Kartia..? What can you create from this?"
Mona's Mother :"The word on this Kartia means "Nothingness"... This Kartia can wipe out all existance.

Intro to the first episode of the game and we are already at fantasy nukes. I'm sure giving such a super weapon to a weak elf girl is not gonna backfire at all

Mona's Mother :"The reason we have been given the Kartia of "Nothingness" is to erase the cause of the destruction. It must be given to the righteous one.
:"...But without the "Text" that explains the meaning of the word on the Kartia, people cannot use it..."

I really hope medical doctors don't subscribe to this kind of problem solving. "Doctor, I'm missing a leg, what should I do?" :commissar:

Couldn't Mona technically be described as a human with an elf soul? Since she is a halfbreed? Maybe not, we'll see.

Mona's Mother :"When the time comes, this person will be led to you. You will know when you see that person."

Footsteps can be heard, and the camera rotates to a new angle

:stare: Those eyes!

:stare: That facepaint! ... Wait hold on a villain with facepaint? That's actually a first for me. He is obviously in the wrestling proffesion. I can only approve of this.

Okey, seriously, "Beltshmeltz"? I take it someone didn't like the new character direction Final Fantasy took.(It's actually just a typo, his name is Beltshumeltz)

:"We can't blame God if we are damned."
:"Well, we are creating Eden, aren't we?"
:"Any progress on deciphering the Text?"
:"We're trying to figure out the elements now."
:"Your father failed in the first experiment... Are you sure you can do it this time?"
:"Don't worry, I'm not like my father. But you have to keep the Inquirers quiet. As long as you do that, the rest is easy."
:"Good... By the way, how is Mona's brother doing? We got him first, didn't we?"

:"He surpasses you... Because he uses evil magic?"
:"He is more of a monster than a magician."

For a guy wearing face paint and scheming with someone about making Eden, Beltshumeltz is surprisingly judgemental.

:"I want to know what you are thinking. You lead the Rebels and you are trying to create Eden. What is your true purpose?"
:"Why do you want to know that?"
:"I'm doing this to find out the existance of God... Each participant in the Rebels have their own reasons...
:"So?"
:"I have dedicated everything to this project... Tell me everything."
:"I want to create Eden. That's all... Plain and simple."

That thing in the middle, that Beltshumeltz is looking at is ofcourse also a special Kartia. In this case "Heaven" and "Nothingness" so far has been mentioned.

Hmm thats odd, it says "Kartia - Record of Fake". Probaly an older title for the game, that got left over into the finished game. You might notice that there are a few bits of... unpolishedness in the game. Now I don't know all that much about the game's development and release, so if anyone knows anything, feel free to post about it.

You'd think it was time for gameplay by now. You are ofcourse wrong.

:siren:MUSIC: Feel Uneasy :siren:

:"Guess we're gonna do this the hard way!"
:"Garum! Stop!"
:"Because of her, we're stuck on this mountain. We're more than 5 days behind!"
:"Mona's escape was your fault, Garum.
:"I think you were too easy on her."
:"Do you have a problem with my methods!?"
:"No, not necessarily..."

Someone approaches the bandit group

:"Who the hell are you?"

Garum isn't the most subtle of people as you have probaly gathered. Anyways I just want to point out that I really like this next scene.

:"I am the daughter of Count Shinon!"
:"The daughter of Metal Gear Count Shinon? Lady Shinon!?"

:"We are just humble merchants who are lost..."

You ever notice that anyone using the line "just humble merchants" are never just humble merchants? Why even use that line at all?

5 people in the bandit group and not a single one of them thought to subdue their hostage. Our villains ladies and gentlemen. Misty might be smarter than Garum, but she isn't that great of a leader.

:"Please help me! I'm in danger!"

Well poo poo Mona. You actually thought to ask for help. Although Ele doesn't look much of a fighter and it's 5 to 1. I mean, what can she really do?

Druids are people we'll talk about later, but for now just know that they are special and specially protected by law against harm. Kind of the same deal where you get a harsher punishment for punching a cop, than just some average guy.

A bandit punches Mona.

:"Garum..."
:"Yes. I know."

:"You guys are thieves..."

I'm pretty sure they're bandits Ele. Thieves don't usually take people hostage or carry weapons. I mean it's a subtle difference.

:"If you value your life, you better come with us."
:"Thanks, but no thanks. I'm pretty strong, so you better watch it!"

Ele draws out a rather large piece of paper

This is a Kartia, as everyday people get them. And while they can be exceedingly dangereous, the worst that can happen to the bandits at this point is that a few of them might get injured. They could still feasibly capture Ele

Encrypters is Kartia specialists. While with the proper education, everyone can learn and use Kartia for everyday things like making apples or coffee. Encrypters specialise in mastering Kartia in every aspect. Basically they're wizards. And you'd do well to not cross them.

The bandits thieves back off a bit

Ele being called out on her bluff, decides to run away

Garum starts to chase, but Misty stops him

:"drat it. She escaped again!"
:"Great... Bring her back. Now!
:"Just you wait until I get my hands on you kid... Let's go!"

Alright, let's stop here for this time. This update is already long enough as it is. Next time we'll actually reach gameplay!

I can't understand these kinds of games, and not getting it bugs me almost as much as me being weird
Ran into the smilies limit.

I think I played a level or two of this at a friend's housem years ago. Be neat to see how it goes.

Ah, yes, I remember this game from a looooooooong time ago. It was pretty interesting. Although I've forgotten most of it by now... whoops! I'll be keeping an eye on this LP.

By the way, using similes to tell who is talking is not really a good idea in text heavy games due to the simile limit. Either use character icons or just names (be sure to bold them).

Didn't know about there being a limit. I knew real, adult LP's had portraits but given how the game presents them, and that I had sat on this OP for quite a while, I really just wanted to start this thing. I'll be fixing it in the near future.

For now I'll just uses bolded names, so it's actually readable by people.

Ahh, Kartia. After playing Final Fantasy Tactics, and falling in love with it, I went looking for more games like it. I came across this at a Blockbuster, and rented it. I started with Lacryma, and I only made it to... Well, I don't remember how far I made it now, but it wasn't far.

I discovered something in battle that I didn't like, and washed my hands of the game. Years later, I'm curious about this game, but not quite enough to try playing it again. I'm glad to see an LP of it.

I used to love this game so much as a kid but I don't think I ever finished it or really understood what was going on - it was just the only game on the PS1 I had with that nifty turn based grid-style game mechanic. So I'll be following this thread with great interest to find out what exactly the 8 year old me missed out on.

Toxa Chapter 1 Episode 1
:siren:MUSIC: Revelation :siren:
This short track plays at the start of every chapter

Last time, we learned that this game is very wordy. So I don't know about you, but I'm craving some action. Unfortunately for you and I, the game has more to say.

MUSIC:IT*S MISSING :( So the track playing here isn't on the youtube playlist, and I don't actually know the name of the track. Which means I will have to learn how to record the audio as it plays from the game and upload it myself.... Which will happen, later. If ever.

The Shrines is the religion of Rebus. I can't remember what it entails specifically. We'll learn more about being a member of the Shrines, from Lacryma's story.
The World Tree, isn't a single tree, but actually a kind of trees. Which is used to make the most powerful kind of Kartia.
In that sense I guess it was used to be illegal to grow world trees as having power run rampant throughout the world would be bad for any government.
Ofcourse, owning World Tree Kartia isn't illegal itself, much like it's not illegal to own god devouring swords, or fantasy nukes.

MUSIC:IT*S MISSING :(

We join our hero, Toxa as he is viciously attacking a woman. I'm joking they're just sparring. No "Oh no I don't fight girls" white knight, fedora crap here. Which is refreshing really.

Vigilance is to Rebus, as the police is to us. Except with more magic.

"Why don't you quit being a security guard and join the Knights of Idorus?
"I'm still not sure what I want to do. I want to stay as a Free Knight until I find my true purpose in life."
"You're very thoughtful... I'm impressed..." You know, Duran's face kind of reminds me of Front Mission 1 for some reason
"We are talking about a life time commitment here..."

"Oh are you creating it? Thanks, I'll take coffee.

The sound of a mug being filled is heard
I'm a terrible LP'er and missed the Kartia animation. Anyways they actually made the sprites hold mugs.

"Wow! It tastes great!"
"It's the one we had before we came here. It's 3 days old. The aroma may have become weak, but I bet it still tastes good."
Now this line is very confusing to me. Since Alana just used Kartia to create this coffee, then how can it be 3 days old?
"You remember the taste? You really have good memory!"
"I'm just peculiar about some things. And you Duran?"
Duran kind of get the silent protagonist treatment here, where Toxa answers for him
"Barley tea!? That's definitedly you!"

So that is how Kartia looks like when it's being cast. Note that since it was Barley tea, the color is green. Toxa's 3 day old coffee was blue.

"I'm a dancer! I'm not from a prestigious family. Actually, far from it.
But that certainly didn't stop you from joining fantasy police. Well that is stretching it. They're more like the official vigilante group and less drug busting, CSI investigators.
"When I go back to my village, I'll be the son of a merchant." A jrpg protagonist, whose parents aren't dead? *squints at the game box* Are you trying to trick me game?

Well her real goal is to become like Lacryma, who is looked up to by a few members of Vigilance

So Raguruzet is leading a rebellion while also trying to create Eden. Busy fellow.

"You mean, You're the only guard around here, Toxa?"
"Yes. Until the revolt in Nordia ends."
"Duran, why don't you gather some Shrine Warriors?"
"I'll give it a try... But I can't promise anything."
"Oh, I can handle it by myself. You just saw my skills, didn't you? Besides, it's not like there is any immediate danger..."
I'm not sure if Toxa is being a terrible guard. I mean he certainly has a point. But the point of guards is to fight off unexpected attackers and invaders. For the expected assault, you want the army. On the other hand Toxa could quite feasibly do the next mission alone.
"You do have a point there."
"Then we'll be leaving."
"Hey, since you guys are not that far from here, come and visit me anytime."

MUSIC: IT*S MISSING AGAIN THATS 3 DIFFERENT TRACKS SHEESH :(

"What happened, Miss?"
"This girl has been attacked! I think she's a Druid!"
"Have thieves broken into the estate!?"
"That's what I said! You're a guard aren't you!"
"I see! Miss Ele, take me to the place where you saw these thieves!"

Back to the road

"Leave her alone, Garum. By the way, have you noticed anything unusual?
"I know. It seems we're close to the fortress. I thought this area looked familiar... Hey! Who the hell are they?"
"You're quite slow aren't you..?"

:siren:MUSIC:Lively Knight:siren: Ha! Finally a track I can link to!

"Let the girl go!"
"Kidnapping a Druid is a serious crime!" As opposed to just kidnapping regular people, Duran? I see how it is.

The Idorus Knight she is talking about is obviously, Toxa. Although he actually isn't an Idorus Knight, but a Free Knight
"What do we do, boss?"
"I'll take care of them. You guys take Mona to the fortress."
Oh poo poo you guys, we are gonna face off against a boss on our first mission? WHAT DO WE DO? WE ARE ONLY LEVEL 1! :siren:
"Hey! Wait!"

Not shown, Garum creating a Phantom

It would be more accurate to say it's a Common type Miles phantom.

Toxa doesn't need a 2 hour long tutorial. He pulls a Cloud here and he is the tutorial.

"Look! He is going to create something!

"There is no use in getting angry at the enemy! If they send out a Doll Phantom, then just counter it with a Common Phantom!"
Alana takes out a Kartia and creates a Common Miles Phantom
"Here you go! The natural enemy of the Doll Type... Common type Phantom Miles!"

I want to point out that the game is cheating here. A character you control can summon a total of 6 phantoms. Misty cannot summon Phantoms, which is why he summoned them for her.
Phantoms also have to be near the character that summoned them. The last part doesn't translate into gameplay in the middle of a battle,
but if a character who can summon phantoms doesn't participate in a battle, that persons phantoms won't be there either.
Not only does Garum summon more phantoms than you can, but he doesnt even need to be in the battle they are in.

Oh and he made the mistake of only creating, Common and Doll Phantoms. Misty won't be able to counter my Common Phantoms. What a digital dummy.

OH MAN YOU GUYS, I THINK THE BOSS IS SERIOUS. WE ARE SO SCREWD
"Hey! You're the bad guys here..." I guess Ele is refering to the line Misty says, is typically a hero line? Maybe it's just something lost in translation?

"Toxa... I want to ask that thief something.
"You want to know about the Druid girl, right?

Alright, into some proper gameplay, and boy oh boy do I have words for you. But first. Remember back in Update: 0 when Ele was bluffing with using Kartia? Well...

Before I explain everything. take a look at Ele's Max Kartia Combo stat. Why yes that is quite a mouthful. Without getting into all the dirty gritty details just yet.
Just know that a 2 card combo, is either the lowest or second lowest value in the game.
That's like being the worst knife juggler in the world and threatening people with throwing knives.
Anyways let's take a look at Toxa's stat screen as he is our main character.

Alright so. Notice how Toxa and Ele have the same number of HP? See that's because every unit in the game has 100 hp. Nothing increases this stat.
Attack is hurty points.
Hit Ratio is how well you hit with your pointy bits.
Defense is your hurt less points. The exact formula is a bit arcane to me, just know that it is quite possible to have high enough defense to not take damage from an attack.
Speed is the real tricky one here. It's actually your evasion stat. The formula is (Hit Ratio - Speed) = Chance to hit
The Elemental values are the various defenses against that type of elemental damage. The formula is (Fire Damage - Fire Defense) = Fire Damage Done
Equip rank is pretty easy to understand. The rank determines what kind of equipment you can equip. Higher rank = better weapons and armor. How effective a unit can be is largely affected by Equip rank.
So on paper, Toxa is a physical power house who can do magic decently well, but is vulnerable to magic. Specifically Fire Magic.
While Ele is weaker than a pasty nerd, but will evade attacks somewhat frequently and can take a better magical beating. But she is terrible at magic. However it's key to notice that Ele also has the lowest equip rank in the game. This will become an issue.

Alana seems to be a mixture of both Ele and Toxa. She has a middle ground attack, speed, between Ele and Toxa. She has Ele's elemental defence, but the lowest defence of them both, she is however missing a piece of equipment. BUT SHE HAS A KARTIA COMBO OF 4!!!!! :siren:
Oh and she has a decent equip rank too I guess.
This is what makes her the most important character in your party.

Duran starts out with terrible equipment for his equip rank. Don't let his stats fool you, he is as much a powerhouse as Toxa is. The real difference between Toxa and him, is that he has better elemental defence, and cannot summon Phantoms.

These are our phantoms. As you'll note they have the same stats, except elemental defence. When using Kartia on Phantoms (Or anyone really] It's important to look at their defences and find the lowest value element and use that. All phantoms are created equally. Unless you do a hidden technique... Okey it's not hidden. But we'll talk about that a little bit later and ties into the Kartia Combo stat.

This is the enemy Doll Miles. It has 1 point higher defence, but 1 point lower speed than our phantoms. But the game isn't actually cheating. It's because they are equipped with 1 more piece of equipment that our phantoms.

And this is Misty. She has a beefy defence on the same scale as Toxa's. Well she is wearing Stone armor just like he is. But while Toxa is wielding a Stone Sword. Misty is wielding a Stone Knife. She, like Toxa is weak to fire.
Anyways let's get this show on the road.

So on my first turn, I move my human character up behind my phantoms and then wait. I let the enemy come to me.
Normally I wouldn't do this, but I want to give my human characters xp, before my Phantom ones for... reasons you'll see later.
The first reason I can tell you right now. If a human is defeated on your team, it's game over man. GAME OVER. Thankfully this game doesn't have instant death spells.
Unlike a certain other Final Fantasy game that pulled this sort of crap. (looking at you Pro Menu Navigator 13). So you'll want to beef up your guys as much as possible.
I could completely trivialise this mission, but for LP purposes and the fact that it isn't trivialised already, I won't.

Anyways my phantom goes down to 88hp. Now why is that? Well for 2 reasons.
1. It was a Doll attacking a Common. Commons are strong against Dolls.
2. It was attacking with an Axe. Axes get a damage reduction if you attack on even ground. and even less if you attack from below. It'll do full damage from above.

My phantom counters for 62 damage. It would have done more if it was wielding a sword.
Spears are opposite to axes. They deal full damage from below, but least from above.
Another factor is that it wasn't a full health! Having lower health reduces a units attack damage.
This is the number 1 reason why a good defense is the best offence.

My 2nd Turn

I have my phantom kill the enemy phantom here, to cut a hole in the wall for my human character to pass through. All the enemy phantoms in the wall is sitting at 38-39 hp. So killing them will be easy. Even for Ele.

As you can see here, the terrain penalty can be quite severe. remember Toxa has 8 attack compared to a phantoms 2. He, like all humans don't get a damage bonus to phantoms of various types.
Swords deal the most damage on even terrain. I ofcourse don't attack here. Instead I'll attack another phantom from even terrain.

See how the hp bars look like they can fit together? That's because upon initiating combat, they come flying in from both sides of the screen, clashing into each other and then land in each corner.
Right now, an attack results in 10xp and a kill 37xp. Misty ofcourse gives more since she is the boss and a tougher opponent

For a phantom with 28hp left, doing 7 damage is alot. Ele's low damage here is because of the terrain.

I clean the last 2 phantoms up with my own phantoms and move the rest up to form a wall.

The enemy doesnt move this turn

My 3rd turn

I attack two of Misty's personal guard phantoms and move the rest of my guys up. Next turn I'm gonna take some damage. But Misty is still gonna lose.

Misty's 3rd turn

She takes out the two phantoms that attacked her, and her phantoms break formation.

My 4th turn

Toxa, Duran, and Alana, score a kill each. In the wish to expediate things, I attack a Doll Phantom with a Shadow Phantom. Hoping it would weaken it enough for Ele.

The 10 damage my Shadow, did wasn't quite enough. And Ele's damage here is kind of larger than before. What gives? Well..

IT*S TIME TO BREAK OUT SOME CARDS. Well okey. A card. There are 9 categories here, but only 4 elements in the game. Waddafak?
Fire, Water, Wind and Earth respectively on the list, has a category for single tile castings and larger area castings. The very last category is Medicine. That is healing Kartia (Which is actually a subset of Water).

The Kartia spell I'm casting is Ice. The Doll phantoms lowest elemental was water after all. As hinted by the hit ratio, Kartia can miss. Though I don't remember ever seeing it happen.
It has an effective range of 1-2 meaning Ele has to be withing 2 squares of the target..
Lastly and most importantly is the Mix option next to the OK button.

Spell you see, doesn't just consist of a single card.
Well in this case Ice does. But you can use more cards on the same spell, making it stronger or change it in some way.
Most of the time you'll just increase it's damage by a small amount and the spell named to +1. Like Ice +1.
Ice +1 deals 64 damage as opposed to Ice which deals 60.You can also raise the range or even the hit area, depending on the combination of cards used. This is also what the Kartia Combo stat means.
Ele can use two Kartia cards at once. In this case she can at best cast Ice +1. She uses one of her card capacity to cast the basic Ice spell and another card capacity to use another Kartia card to enhance the Ice spell to +1.
There is a downside to this. If you look at the bottom of the screen you can see. Silk, Mithril and World Tree. These numbers is exactly how much Kartia of each type we have. Right now I can cast any combination of 50 Fire, Ice, Thunder or Quake spells. But only 25 Fire +1, Ice +1 etc etc. 2 single unenhanced Ice spells, will deal more damage then a single Ice +1. Kartia is also shared between your characters. Oh and Kartia is used to both create phantoms and cast spells.
Some times a specific Kartia card will add +2 or +3 to a spell for the cost of a single card. Like the cards Stone and Hard will result in Quake +2 as opposed to Quake +1. Which you'd get if you combined Stone with Just.
For now we only have access to Silk cards. Mithril and World Tree cards will ofcourse be much stronger, but those cards are also obtained in less quantities.

Ele fails to kill the phantom with the spell and I missed capturing the spell. Misty does nothing on her next turn.

Ele assasinates the last phantom

Now... I don't know about you, but I feel it's time for some disco. You might even say a Disco Inferno

Duran and Toxa, both uses Fire on Misty, making her extra crispy. Toxa gets the kill, but doesnt level up. He sits at 97xp :(

"Are we going to chase after the enemy?"
"Of course! We have to save the girl!"
"No, let's go back for now."
"Why!? She might get killed!"
"If they wanted her dead, she would be dead by now, right?"
"Seems like you are the only one with any brains here."
"We need to get more Kartia. Toxa, let's go back first"
"Okey..."

:siren:MUSIC:Shout of Victory:siren:

Took 5 turns. I could do it in 4, but I'd have to give up some xp. I defeated everyone resulting in 11 kills and I lost 3 phantoms. They could be saved, I just didn't care to. For LP reasons you see.

As a reward for our endeavour, we get 40 silk Kartia and two new Texts. Texts are very important to grab as they allow you to cast better spells. Among other things. But We'll see that next update.

Episode 1 Chapter 1 Epilogue
Theres more? I spent over 4 hours on this already! Halp! Save me! Well we are nearing the end of this Episode/Chaper. The... show... must go... on

:siren:MUSIC:Attractive Legend:siren:

"You have to calm down!"
"Yeah, but..."
"First of all, tell us your name."

"My name is Misty... Misty Rouge."
"Rouge... Where have I heard that name before?"
Count Shinon "Rouge... Rouge... Hmm... Oh my god! Are you the daughter of the Rouge family?""
"Do you know the name, my Lord?"

"I never knew that."
"That's a horrible story..."
Count Shinon "The daughter whose family was killed by thieves is now a thief herself... What a sad story..."

Yes... quite. I'm sorry? I didn't pay attention. Because I'm much more excited about what comes next.

YES The save screen! From the intro to the end of the first missions epilogue, there isn't a single oppertunity to save. Oh and the LP has already hit over 40000 characters. Well to be fair that's also counting the OP. Still. So many words.
The Archives, let you watch any scene you've seen so far. Very useful to me.
The Arena is an optional fighting arena for items and Kartia.
I won't be showing them off but I will be doing them. In the Arena you fight increasingly more difficult challenges with only Toxa at his current level on your save, and some phantoms given to you.
Thats why it's important to level up Toxa and keep his equipment up to date. Arenas give you items and Kartia. I think it was something like 40 Silk 5-ish Mithril and 1 World Tree.
I could cast a World Tree Spell! In the second mission of the game! Or rather I could if I had any Texts for it. The item I got, I'll go over in depth in the next update.

NEXT TIME: Episode 2 Chapter 2? Or is it Episode 1 Chapter 2? This game is kind of inconsistent with these things. Either way, We will be seeing more to Toxa and his friends.

Ele did carry Kartia on her. It's an everyday commodity. As for why Ele was having her pockets full of attack Kartia, when she is the objectively worst caster in the game... weeeeeell. That can probaly be explained by her being a noble woman. She isn't expected to fight anyone in a fist fight, but if I had a daughter that's a potential target for kidnappings, I'd be sure she had some sort of self defense option other than a wooden sword.

I still have this game lying around. Made it ... I don't know how far in, but kept hitting a brick wall at some point and having issues. Loved the music, though.
At the time I didn't have any idea how horrible it was to be a European gamer and had no idea it had been delayed that long. I'm glad it came out over here, eventually, though.

Sazero, I have the soundtrack, and that source of yours has all the tracks from it. I'm sorry to say this is one of those cases where not all music made it on to the soundtrack. The music's already been ripped to PSF format, though.

Well, as we'll discover, the game is quite unpolished with the lesser important things. For example Toxa's chapter 2 title card, reads chapter 3. It's wildly inconsistent, so I'm not surprised that all the music didn't make it to the soundtrack disc.

I have no idea what PSF is. But I'll look into it and figure out a way to get the music links up.

Yeah, something looks off with the images. I think it might be because they're an odd resolution: 800x450, instead of something like 800x600 or 640x480...

As I recall, there's a secret in the other scenario that you can only get by taking the weakest possible phantom, made with particular kartia to give it certain stats, and leveling it up until it has a high enough movement to reach a treasure before the time limit.

I'm pretty sure that's actually because the chapters are split between the protagonists and so Toxa gets chapter 1, then Lacryma gets 2, and then Toxa gets 3, and so on. That's how I understood it when I played, anyway.

That actually seems to be making sense. I quickly checked Lacryma's first mission. Her Chapter 1 is Episode 2, while Toxa's Chapter 1 is Episode 1. So in short. Episodes is where each chapter fits in, into the overall time line.
However with that being said. You only get to see one side of the story at once. You can't change to Lacryma's story, while in the middle of Toxa's unless you start a new game. So It's still a little bit confusing.

If things get too confusing about what happens when, I'll create a timeline in the OP and update it as we continue on.

PS. I'd prefer to not discuss future gameplay elements until we cover them in the LP. If you really want me to know about a secret. Please, spoiler tag them/pm me/smoke signal it.

It's actually because of the resolution I'm playing at and the process of resizing the images that I screwed up. I'll endeavour to get 800x600 from now on.

If I'm reading the dialog correctly, I think objects, or at least comestibles, made with Kartia are, in part, created using the creator's memory. So, when Alana summoned the coffee, what she meant was she was basing it on coffee she'd had three days ago, so her memory of the smell was no longer as strong, while her memory of the taste was still fresh in her mind. That's how I interpreted it, anyway.

Still it might never come up, so let's just forget about it.

Anyways we're back to slightly before we left off last time. This time we learn the TRUE reason why Ele was laughing.

"What are you laughing at?
"I'm laughing because it was funny. Is there something wrong with that?"
"What's so funny!?"
"Because it's so ridiculous! I hope you aren't taking her seriously"

Count Shinon "Ele, I am not going to allow you to say such things! Stay away from the matter.

"How long are you going to interrogate her? Don't you think she is doing this to buy time? She's doing this to give her gang time!"

The sound of someone slamming their hands on a piano is played. The party looks at Misty as they realize her goal.

Count Shinon "We got hooked... I bet the rest of the thieves are safely back at their fortress..."

"A deal?"
"I will show you the way to the fortress and the Druid girl, if you set me free.

"Are you serious? You are dealing with a thief!
"I'm with Duran. We're not getting anywhere with her."
"So, you're going to make a deal with the bad guys!?"
"Don't make a fuss. We don't have time for this!

Count Shinon "Ele! Hold your tongue!"
Yes, let's have the smart one shut up. That is a good idea.
"But... Yes, father..."

:siren:Music: Feel Uneasy:siren:

That's actually a pretty good point. A better question is, why would Misty even show the group to the right place? She knows exactly how important Mona is.
Her mission was given to her from Vandor, whom she is clearly loyal to. You'd think she'd lead the group to the wrong place to buy even more time for the thieves
and thus ensure their succes in leading Mona to where Vandor wants her.

And the group is letting Misty walking freely. It could be a ruse, and Misty could have ran straight back to the thieves and joined them.

"I'm now the new leader of this group of thieves."
"What is the meaning of this!?"
"We don't need you anymore, Misty!"
"Wait until Vandor finds out! You'll..."
"Really? Your friends are really cruel..."
"What!?"
"It was your organization who asked me to kill you."
"That's a lie!"
"Why would I lie to the one who is about to be killed!? Ha, ha, ha, ha, ha!"

Well there are plenty of reasons. To simply just usurp the leadership and turn Misty against Akueldo who would see her as the betrayer and dispose of her?
Or maybe Garum just hates Misty and used the oppertunity when Misty got caught. What I'm getting at is, never trust what an enemy is saying. Especially right after they've backstabbed you.
Even if what they say is always true in video games.

I don't really think you can claim moral high ground here Toxa. You did hold Misty hostage after all...

"Look, in this world, only the strong survive."
"That's it! A dog like you has no right to live!"
"You're pretty confident! Come on, I'll fight you!"
"Come on!"
"Miss Ele, take Misty and stay back! Toxa, you too!"
"Toxa, our purpose is the save the Druid!
"I know!"

BATTLE TIME

:siren:Music: Phantom Beast 1:siren:
This is the track that plays during player phase in battles.

This is our starting position. As you'll note we only have 3 phantoms. Phantoms act like permanent party members, until they're dead where they'll be gone FOREVER.
However we can remedy that. But before that, let's take a look at our surroundings.

Right infront of us is a pair of Miles phantoms. Not the greatest threat, but they are level 2. All of our dudes is still lvl 1. But if we look just a little bit further we see...

Gah! New enemies! These guys are called Beheads. As you might have suspected, there are more than Miles type phantoms.
Beheads is their bigger, meaner brother. This is also why I don't bother leveling my phantoms up.
You see every so 1 or 2 maps, we'll be getting new phantom types, which will horribly outclass the last generation of phantoms.
This means that every 1 or 2 maps our phantoms are already outdated.
Combined with the fact that experience is a limited ressource and any deaths on a human character is instant lose, means that phantoms are only there to soften up enemies, and take hits for your human characters.
These Beheads are only lvl 1, but you'll soon see the difference between them and Miles.

Oh and to add further insult to our phantoms, we can't even create Beheads yet.

Further on in, we have Garum, guarded by 3 thieves.
Thieves, or any human character really, is the largest threat to your success. Because like Misty in last mission, they can all cast Kartia.
This goes triply so, when they are grouped up and decide to focus a single character with Kartia. Yes it has happened and Toxa has seen plenty of watery death.
The thieves themselves are lvl 3 which is alarming. But when we take a look at Garum, we see...

:siren: level 5!? LEVEL 5!? gently caress MISTY, THIS IS SECRET DUNGEON FINAL BOSS LEVEL! Whelp LP over! It had some nice music, but the game is far too short.

Oh, but I see hope! See our objective is not to take out Garum. We can simply kill the Shadow Miles surrounding Mona, and that'll end the mission. All is not lost.

And then there are these little fuckers. They exist to make you miserable. The Kyau is the phantom basic form. Even lesser than the Miles.
Type 0 if you will. They have terrible attack stats and they don't have type multipliers. As in they don't do or take more damage from the type triangle.
They also cannot equip armor or weapons. But what they do have is a very particular set of stats. Stats that make them a nightmare for people like me.
They have the highest base movement and speed stat in the game. Meaning that those fuckers will almost always evade half your attacks and they can run the hell away really fast too.

On the left of the phantoms are two chests. You really do no want to miss any chest ever in this game, because they contain more Kartia, and more importantly, more Texts!
Texts is the singular most important thing to pick up in the game. It allows you to make better phantoms and better spells. You want to hunt these down whenever you can.
There is also a chest behind a pot on the right side of the Miles, and there is a chest right next to Garum too.

Anyways we kind of need some more bodies if we want to take on Garum. We specifically need a Doll Phantom.
So this is the Phantom creation Menu. It resembles the Kartia menu alot.
As you can see we have 3 Kartia slots. The first one is used to determine what type of phantom we make. Common, Shadow or Doll.
To make a Doll phantom you need the "Ore" Text. But that just gives us a Kyau.
The subsequent slots determines the Phantoms form.
So I add a "Goblin" Text to make my Kyau into a Miles Doll.
However we still have one slot left. Would the form change again, by adding a third Text?
No. It does not. But it can enhance our phantom. By adding "Fire" you could increase the phantoms Fire defense.
But screw that, we all know the most important stat is movement. So I add the "Fast" text instead.
Resulting in this Miles you see on the screenshot.

I also make a Kyau for treasure grabbing and then set our line up to this.

My 1st Turn.

My first order of business is boxing that Kyau in. Or rather that was my plan, but both of my miles hit their attacks and it died. If they hadn't killed it,
it would have been unable to move since you can't move through enemies and vice versa.

:stare: I... What the gently caress Alana? What did you DO to that Miles? It's... Wow. What happened?

Right, so remember that I might have mentioned something about an Arena, last update? I said that it gave you some Kartia and an item as a reward for completing it. Well the Fire Arm, is that reward.
The Fire Arm is a beast of a weapon. It gives Alana 10 attack, which is more than Toxa's 9. But what makes it so wonderful, is that it adds a further 50 fire damage to the total damage. Toxa deals around 50ish damage to the Miles's.
But Alana does a whopping 92. And let me tell you, when you have 100 hp you won't have long for this world, when Alana is around.

And no I don't feel any shame in using this weapon at all. The Arena is hideously easy to do, and you can get the Fire Arm from the first chapter. But you'll only ever get 1.

Anyways the Doll weakens the Shadow Miles, and Duran finishes it off for a level.
Toxa not wanting to get shown up, blows the Common Miles up further.
You know, every update I learn something new to try and make the update better.
Last update I learned how to make portraits. This update I learned that 800x450 resolution really is terrible.
But you know, this is posted on new year so let's light things up a bit further.

Yes, I also learned how to make lovely gifs. Hooray!

After that I moved the rest of my dudes up.

Garums 1st turn
A whole lot of nothing. Garum is on the defensive and doesnt move any of his units.

My second turn

First thing's first. I grab this.

To those that don't read chinese, that reads "Iron" and with that thing in our inventory we can move on to todays feature!

LET*S BREAK LEGEND OF KARTIA FURTHER
So Garum is pretty intimidating at a beastly level 5. So let's get some crutches to get a fighting chance

It might not be all that surprising, but Legend of Kartia doesn't have shops. Instead it has this. The Weapon Creation Menu. Where you can make both weapons AND armor.
It is so glorious.
While this menu has always been available to us. (like Phantom creation and Kartia) I've been holding off on showing it off as we couldn't create any new items we didn't already have.
But that has changed now!
What we are mostly interesting in creating is swords. A majority of our fights will be on even ground.
All the equipment have two menus for each equipment slot.
One for high equip rank, and one for low equip rank.
Right now we are mostly interested in the high equip rank swords.
The basic form is a D rank Wood Sword. That costs 1 Silk Kartia to make.

If I added our new Iron MITHRIL Kartia to it. It becomes the Iron Sword. Toxa's default weapon.
In this is where Alana will truly become our best friend forever. She is the true protagonist.
Remember her Kartia stat? It's 4. Which means we have 4 Kartia slots to create things with.
Which means right now, I have 2 open slots for my Iron Sword.
If you remember from the Spells. You can add more Kartia to make a spell stronger.
And you can do that with weapons aswell!
Normally when you add another Kartia, it simply improves the item by 1. IE +1
But some times a specific Kartia will synergise better with the weapon or spell increasing it by more.
In this case. Since we have an Iron sword, if we add "Strong" to it. It becomes a +2 Iron Sword for one 1 Kartia slot.
Since we don't have any more of those Kartia's we'll add another random Kartia to it so it becomes +3 Iron Sword.
In this case, it simply gets another 3 damage in total.

But you can create armor aswell. And that increases the defense bonus and reduces the speed penalty. Sometimes it even increases elemental defenses.

I create a full set of weapons and armor for Toxa. That's a beastly 21 defense stat. And let me tell you. The Miles from Chapter 1? They didn't even hurt Toxa then. He had 12 defense then.
Nothing will touch him now. (except for Kartia).

Duran also get's a +3 sword, but he gets Toxa's hand me down Stone armor. Because enemies weren't even touching Toxa this mission.

I can also create a Chain Vest +2 and I gave the rest of the D rank equipment Duran had to Alana aswell. She might be nicked by 2-4 damage so she is also pretty safe.

Ele get's a Dark Katana. Alana's old weapon. I also take her Red Cap and give her a Straw Hat instead. She won't be seeing heavy combat

Moving on, I move my guys further up, as they cannot murder anything yet, I have to let them stand by.

Ele lightnings the pot, for a new Text "Needle". It allows us to cast "Needle Fire". A fairly good damaging spell.
Behind the pot is a chest with the "Sick" Text. Required for the "Sick Burns" Spell.

Garum's 2nd turn
A whole lot of nothing again. No he isn't even moving the Beheads out that one square to attack my characters...

My 3rd turn

This is a pretty uneventful turn for me. Toxa casts Quake on both Beheads.

Alana kills the Common Behead (The one to the left). While Duran brings the Shadow Behead down to 36 hp.
My Kyau opens the second chest, getting me some more Mithril Kartia.

Here I test the waters and compare my phantoms. The Shadow Behead is almost dead, and it still deals more damage than my Shadow Miles. Granted the Miles is using a spear and thus gets a damage penalty, but come on!

Ele moves up towards Mona, and opens the passageway with Flame. She gets a Mithril Kartia for destroying the blocks.

Garum's 3rd Turn
Nope

My 4th Turn

Toxa kills the wounded Shadow Behead. And now here is where the mission can get tricky. You generally don't want a group of enemy humans clustered together like they because they can and will focus a human down with Kartia.
So we'll have to create a brilliant plan. A stratagem so perfect they----

Duran! What are you doing! You're in danger now! I----

Oh. Alana deals 92 damage to the lvl 3 thieves aswell. That guy is super dead since the quake left him at 70ish

The AI also seems to favor attacking Phantoms when it can or targets that have low health. Ele stands around doing nothing this turn as she has to wait for the Doll Miles to catch up.

Garum's 4th Turn

Garum wastes his turn by summoning a Common Miles. Duran get's hit by a Stones spell leaving him at 80ish health. The third thief casts wind on my Shadow Miles.

My 5th Turn

REVENGEANCE! Duran attacks the other thief and Toxa finishes the thief off.

You don't actually liberate Mona until you move a friendly human next to her.

This is the... uh... Hold on.... Nuts. I didn't take a look at it.
Anyways I move my phantoms up, attack the Common Miles and then end my turn

Garums 5th turn
Garum heals himself and his phantom suicides on my phantom

My FINAL Round!

So you can end this mission in two ways and the dialogue does change depending on whether you save Mona, or defeat Garum.

Saving Private Mona

Garum flees

"Wait!"
"Hold it Toxa!"
"Why, aren't we going after him?"
"Never chase an enemy with too much vigour."
"What about the Druid girl? You can't take her with you"
"You're right! Let's go back for now!"
"He's such a dim wit..."
.
.
.
:
But that is not what happened. Let's go back to the real, dark and gritty world

Hmm... I'm just not feeling it. Here let's try this out.

Happy New Year! You know how you always have a little bit of fireworks afterwards? Let's fire the last rocket shall we?

FWUSH! BOOM!

Defeating Garum

"i'm not going to let you go!"
"Wait, Toxa!
"Why? We're not going to get him?"
"Don't chase an enemy with such determination."
"What about the Druid girl? You can't take her with you"
"You're right! Let's go back for now!"
"He's such a dim wit..."

6 turns, 12 defeated and 0 damage. Not bad. I could maybe do it in 5. But that would mean missing out on xp. And that's just a no no.
It also occurs to me that I wasn't particularly mindful of when our guys got levels and such.
So here they are.
Toxa 3.
Alana 3.
Duran 3.
Ele 2.
Stat gains aren't the most exciting. Typically a character will either get a point in defense or speed, and a little more elemental defence. I know Equip Rank will go up at some point too, though it's unclear when.
Anyways I'll note any significant changes if I notice them. I can be pretty :downs: sometimes so I might miss something.

Chapter 2 Episode 3 Epilogue

"Are you sure you're alright?"
"She's fine Toxa, you worry too much."
Probaly the first time Toxa ever saved anyone from any real harm.So he is of course a little bit excited to be a hero in shining armor.
Count Shinon "Mona of the Druids... I have a couple of questions to ask, if that is alright with you."
"I don't mind. Go ahead."
"How did you get yourself kidnapped by the thieves in the first place?"
"I don't know. Everything happened so fast..."
"Well, where were you before you got kidnapped?"
"I was at the place where the World Tree grows."
"Well, you're a Druid. Where else would you be?"
Not really an answer Ele. There are multiple World Trees right now. There is one in your own backyard. And you didn't see Mona there did you?

"Um... I'm sorry.... I don't quite understand the question..."
"Count Shinon, Druids do not have a concept of territory..."
So what? They don't understand maps? Do they still think the Earth Rebus is flat? Frigging hippie elves :argh:
"Where there is a World Tree is considered their home..."
And the idea of looking for new things, never occured to them? Do they think the World Tree's are so great that that's all they want?
Maybe go look at other World Tree's than the one they're currently looking at? Maybe meet some other Elves? Just sayin.
Stop living in your moms basement, Elves! :argh:

Count Shinon "I'm sorry to hear that.
"No, don't worry about it."
"There are alot of things you don't know..."
"I'm sorry I can't be of much help."

"We'll take you back to the World Tree, Mona. You have nothing to worry about. You can stay here until then, right, my Lord?"

So while Mona thanks everyone for their kindness, she is secretly thinking about the usage of her Fantasy Nuke. Frigging elves. :argh:

Meanwhile, in a room much smaller than the last one.

Woah check out that bed! 6 people could sleep on that thing!

The safety word is "Pink Penguin"

But I need World of Warcraft. It's not an addiction. I can control it!
"Leave me alone..."
.
"Are you being kind to me so that I'll to talk to you? Don't underestimate me."

Ugh, I don't know about you, but I just hate converters. Listen, hearing voices is a sign of mental sickness. I know because my voices tell me! So there!

While sticking my fingers into my ears and screaming "La la la la", when someone is talking about god to me, is my favorite thing to do. I do realise it's frowned upon... Not that it stops me, ofcourse.

:siren:MUSIC: Misty's Confession:siren:

Turns out she really did have a sad backstory. Because ofcourse she did. Or maybe it's just a clever ruse to talk over Preacher McGodlover over there. Can't say I blame her.

Plot twist! The fantasy church is actually evil!

"What?"

So creating Phantoms was not actually a natural ability of Kartia. But a result of research. Or atleast there was a time where people didn't create Phantoms.
As one can imagine religion usually frowns upon artificially creating life. However, whether Phantoms contain sentience or not remains to be seen.

Click. The door locks
Wow Duran, that's cold. What did you just give up because the god speech didn't workout? And you even turned off the lights too! That's just ice cold. Was it the same ice you used on Garum?(it's actually just the scene fading out.)

Elsewhere... again. Probaly Shinon Estate

Ugh, better not deal with the depressed woman. Out of sight, out of mind is what I say.

Do you ever wonder, where they got those over sized furniture? Is it a status thing? I don't get it

"She is hard to deal with..."
"She was betrayed by her own people. It must be tough..."
"My father said he would leave Misty to you guys."
"Should we hand her over to the Knights when they come back?"
"What do you think?"
"Let me think..."
"Let's wait for a while. I want to give her time to think."
"If Duran says so, I'm for it."

"Barely..."
"She has not said anything. I'm sure she is hiding something."
"She's been through alot. She's probaly exhausted."
"You're awfully kind to her. She may be the real boss!"
"That's crazy! It's obvious that she's a good girl!"

Ele and Toxa starts fighting for a bit

"We have to decide how to protect the Druid..."
"That's easy! I will guard Mona!"
"What? I thought you were my security guard!"
I'd imagine that Toxa is the whole estate guard. If he were Ele's guard. It would probaly be to keep her inside the house, rather than repelling invaders. Maybe he is a little bit of both.
"Huh? Oh, and I'll protect Miss Ele, too..."
"You were going to protect me, right!? Forget it! I can take care of myself!"

I think Ele is upset that Toxa isn't her personal bodyguard anymore, as opposed to the feminist "I don't need a bodyguard, I'm a strong independant woman!" thing.
Or maybe it's because Toxa said it like she was an afterthought.

"Hey, take it easy! No need to get all upset!"

"Vigilance will be fine, right Duran?"
"Lacryma and Troy are there. They'll be fine..."
"I can already see Troy complaining..."
"That's Troy. He always has something to complain about."
"I didn't know there could be such an annoying guy..."
"Actually, he is not that bad once you get used to him..."
"I don't understand how can you enjoy trouble?"
"If you join Vigilance, you'll understand."

"Anyway, we'll stay here. I'm also concerned about Misty
"Thank you for staying. We should all get some rest."
Epilogue End

Next time on Kartia. I don't have a clue of whats going on, because I didn't play in advance! Expect Toxa though.

Well it's certainly possible. The exact nature of how Kartia operates is never fully explained. If at all.
So maybe it's a power that draws upon imagination and written memory.

There certainly is a theme going for literature in general going on in the game.
You got Texts. Grammar and Inscribers so far.
Every Text is actually just a single word. And you need the Grammar to fit the words into the correct order and combination to create anything that makes sense.

Although it doesn't completely translate into gameplay, as the order of texts you put in doesn't matter to get a certain result.
Sword - Iron - Strong and Sword - Strong - Iron will generate the same result.

I get it! You're, uh...
True story: this was the very first RPG I ever played. It was actually one of the first video games I ever played, period. I had just gotten a Playstation for Christmas, and... okay, it's not an interesting story. But Kartia still holds a special place in my heart, partially due to nostalgia, partially because there are some things it does really well. The characters are (mostly) well-written and well-illustrated, and I really like how the Kartia system is both a central gameplay and story element. It just intertwines really well, IMO. That said, the game has plenty of weaknesses, and it's more than a little silly. I still enjoy busting it out and playing through it every few years, though. I'm embarrassingly knowledgeable about the game as a result, so ask whatever you feel like if the mood strikes you. I'll try not to be That Poster (tm).

For example, there are actually traps on that last map. A few of the big stone pillars are rigged to fall on your party members if they end their turn adjacent to one. It only does 40 or so damage, but it can be an unpleasant surprise.

Good job on the LP, so far. I look forward to more. :)

I actually didn't know that. But then again, I am playing this blind. There are cases where I'm playing dumb, because I don't want to overload people with information or because it could fit better in a future update.
But for the most part if I don't mention something, it's likely that I missed it. So feel free to mention anything I've missed in any of the missions I've done so far.

When I was playing this chapter it didn't occur to me that I could win the mission by placing a character next to Mona. So when I did by accident I was pretty surprised.
That game was also a bit more messy because I didn't get the first strike on the thieves. The thieves could have taken out Alana, but decided to kill my Kyau instead.
I also didn't know that you could use Kartia as soon as you find it, so prior to getting the Iron Text, I had made several +3 Stone Swords and two full sets of +2 Stone Armor.

I decided to redo the mission after that bit of mess.

Glazius posted:

Specific words require certain materials.
You can only ever write Silk Texts on Silk Kartia, and Mithril Texts on Mithril Kartia.

You wouldn't really want to waste mithril kartia on silk text, anyway. Mithril text is generally better than silk text, but you get less mithril kartia to balance it out.
Then again, I wasn't the best player. Think I was petrified of losing so tended to fight mainly with Phantoms, which led to the humans not getting much experience. Phantoms with a couple of levels aren't totally outclassed so I found it reasonable to keep using existing Miles after Beheads showed up, but pretty pointless to create new ones.

A Kyau is always handy for being cheap and having an insane movement range, though they're pretty frail so the lack of weakness triangle doesn't really help them. Good for blocking enemy movement, if little else.

I'm also assuming it's the Phantom referred to in Lotish's earlier post, regarding a certain secret.

So, Saz, you may be playing blind, but will you be trying to get secret stuff as it comes up? I'm kinda curious as to what would qualify as a secret in this game. Like, will it be just equipment (I assume there's gotta be secret equipment), or are there secret texts, too?

I will grabbing anything that isn't nailed down and set on fire. Well, except for maybe one or two things, depending on how reasonable the game wants to be.
Would you consider the Fire Arm a secret piece of equipment? Or simply an optional one? I mean, the Arena is right there after each chapter.

Kyau also haven insane speed stat. I was lucky last update to kill it on the first turn. Both of my Miles had a solid 55% chance to hit. I primarily use them for grabbing treasure chests or distraction, because the game AI seems to prioritise Phantoms over Humans if they are in range.

You would never need to use a Silk Text on Mithril, considering you get 40 Silks per mission to the 3-4 Mithrils so far. Those numbers are only gonna go up.

Toxa Episode 6 Chapter 3 Pt.1

It's almost like someone planned to sneak through an area they'd know would have less security than normal. Nah probaly a coincidence.

As we learned through Misty's and Duran's little scene last update, Phantoms is a recent invention and was priorly prohibited by the Shrines, to the point where they murdered Misty's parents
because they were doing Phantom research. The Shrines themselves still don't allow their members to create Phantoms, but has since been allowed. Still 10 years is a rather short time to get over the former taboo.
And I imagine there aren't many teachers about, just teaching thieves how to create semi sentient life. So it certainly is a question worth thinking about.

I appreciate it when writers attempt to write clever characters, but when they make them ask, why someone didn't steal a TREE, then that just kind of makes the whole thing silly.
Alana you need to drink more coffee. And before you say "It might be the size of a bonsai", let me just tell you right now that no, World Trees are not small bonsai trees. They're regularly sized.

Quite a leap in time, this time around. Last chapter were Episode 3

Honestly, this chapter feels a little bit like filler. I mean, I know that it isn't. It just feels that way.

Hold on, we aren't at the Shinon Mansion. We're at the gardens with the Shinon World Tree. Come on game.
Also, that is the World Tree that Mona is sitting infront. Count Shinon figured Mona might aswell make herself useful while she is sticking around.
And taking care of World Trees is exactly what they do. What that entails is appearently sitting down and doing nothing. Friggin' elves :argh:

Just to be clear, a indeterminable amount of time has passed since last update. I'd imagine a week or two at most.
Toxa and Ele, being excruciatingly bored, decide to check up on Mona.

"Why don't you join us for breakfast?"
"We have a variety of fruits. Pick what you want."

Ele puts the Kartia away and produces a new one.

Ele puts the Kartia away and produces a new one. Again

Ele puts the Kartia away and shuffles through her Kartias.

"Why am I only getting tangerines!?"
"Don't ask me..."
"Ummm... Tangerines are fine with me."
"Oh, ok... Then I'll create it."

Immediate logic would dictate, that the Kartia casting color should be green, because plants are green. But green Kartia is actually wind aligned.
Blue, which is water, makes as much sense as Earth would. Unfortunately this game doesnt feature combined elements.
(Even though Alana cast green Kartia when she created Duran's barley tea. But a better question is, why do I take note of which color each characters food is?)

Okey, that is clearly an oversized lemon.

"Thank you very much. This is a very big tangerine."
"I was being generous."

I don't really understand why people cannot acknowledge that sometimes, they're just not good at things they do, and through practice and effort they become better at things.
Like this LP!

"But it's true Miss Ele. You always create sour tangerines."
"Fine, then why don't you create it, Toxa?"
Yes, let's challenge the guy who can create possibly sentient life, to a contest in Kartia skill. I'm sure that won't be eggs on your face Ele.
"It's quite alright. I like sour ones."
"You don't have to be nice to her. There's is plenty of food."
Well, there is plenty of tangerines atleast. I wonder if there is a roastbeef sandwich Kartia.

"You picked the wild ones? You have to climb high mountains in order to get those"
"Is that so?"
"Don't look so disappointed. I'll pick some for you next time.
"Really!?"

"We Druids use less Kartia for everyday life"
"Why..?"
"The great World Tree... She began watching over us since the beginning of time. When this tree disappears"
The "great World Tree", seems to be the grandmother of all the World Trees. The original World Tree. Atleast that's what would make the most sense, in a world with multiple world trees
"That's when all the strings of hope will be cut... A legend of the Druids, right? I remember learning it in history class."
"That means there is a limited amount and we can't overuse it."
Ugh, not one more of those "The world has limited resources" speech the 90'ies are so fond of. But no, that is not exactly what it means Toxa.
If you were to chop down all the World Trees and make Kartia out of them. Then you'd simply never be able to use World Tree Kartia ever again once you've ran out.
I mean sure, daily life would be harder. Much harder. But it's not "strings of all hope will be cut" despair. The legend is refering to something else I suspect.
Besides humans would never give up World Tree power. Luckily for you, you can appearently just grow them in your backyard.
But hey, legends are just myths anyways. They never come true. So let's just forget this druid legend business and go back to eating our sour tangerines.

"But there is also Kartia made from Mithril or Silk now..."
Economics 101. Don't use an expensive resource to create a cheaper resource in the same quantity. IE Don't use frigging Silk Kartia to create tangerines!
Someone do the math to exactly how many tangerines you would need to create from a single Silk Kartia (Assuming it's a 1 Text spell anyways.) to make it worth it.
And let's not get into the whole "Couldn't you just create more silk/mithril Kartias with your Kartias?". The answer is either yes, you could create Kartia, but only in the quantities you use to make them.
Or no, because otherwise why would you raise World Trees when you could just create those Kartias with Kartia?

"Yes, but even Mithril and Silk have limitations"
"That's like hundreds of years from now, so why should we care?"
"If you really take care of the World Tree, it won't disappear... I must protect it so it will last forever."

Yeah Mona, You're such a hypocrite. Gawd.

"Miss Ele, what is your problem!?"
Oh no! it's just like high school all over again. I'm going into shellshock.
"I'm just telling the truth. What is wrong with that?"
Bullies. Stupid teachers. Homework. Jocks. Icky girls. More Homework. Exam anxiety.
"You don't have to fight because of me..."
Blarghasffnaksfbasdasdkasdlasd.....
"Yes, but Miss Ele is... She is so mean to you."
...
"Don't worry... I believe Miss Ele will understand someday..."
"Wow, you're very mature. The exact opposite of Toxa!"

Ele leaves and Toxa is staying behind in thought. Ele returns alarmed about something and quickly all 3 of them rushes out

ELSEWHERE

Misty died of dehydration on top of the enormeous bed. Duran feeling guilty about not taking care of her, didn't move her body.
The stench became a problem and he opened the window to let the fresh air it. It's the only explanation that makes sense.

Misty thinks of 4 people here. Curiously we only know 3 of them. Who could the baldy be? Probaly henchman #8476A Delta who tried asking her out.

("It must be a mistake or Garum is lying...")
"Lying here in bed is getting me nowhere... I have to get out of here and contact Akueldo".
Before Misty can start her tactical stealth mission, someone knocks on the window.
"Who is it?"
Clone Thief #7302 Spy "Misty..? I have a message from Akueldo..."
("A spy sent by Cross... I bet he wants Mona back...")
"How did you get here?"
Turns out "sneaking in" is just walking around like you belong there. Pretty easy really.
Spy "That's my job. I need to know how much manpower they have at this estate..."
"Before I answer that question, I need to know one thing... Tell me what you know about the plot against me.
Someone in Akueldo wants me dead..."
Spy "That's just a rumor..."
"You know something, don't you? You have to tell me!"
Spy "Since we're in a similar position, I shall tell you... Do not go back to Akueldo..."
Makes me wonder what kind of position the Spy is in. And whether the Spy would be a more interesting story than Misty's.
"Why!?"
Spy "A price will soon be placed on your head... Go to Vesta or somewhere else, if you can."
"Who's behind this?"
Spy "I can't tell you that... I don't want to cause any trouble"
"Fine... Then I'll do what I want..."

Duran and Alana rush into the room

"Why are you telling me this?"
"I'm opening my heart... Is that suffecient enough?"
"Can you prove what you're saying is not a trap?"
"No, I can't prove anything, but..."
"Duran, let's check out her story... We're expecting the enemy anyway. If Mona is safe, then that's great."
"Right! It would be best to do that, rather than worry."
"Misty, will you join the fight? I don't care what your intentions were, but we need more people to protect Mona."
Hahahaha No you don't Alana, You have a sword that explodes people.
"I am a Rebel... I mean a thief..."
"I always give people the benefit of a doubt."

Fade out to black

Next time. What was Ele so alarmed about? Is Mona really in danger? I'm pretty sure it's all just some kids who TP'ed the Shinon mansion and now Toxa has to go clean up.

Since updates were getting a bit long, and probaly were gonna be longer still I've decided to cut the updates into shorter bites. Hopefully this means I'm gonna be able to update regularly on my not-vacation days.
Also I'll put up the music links later.

Citrus fruits are too juicy to be earth element, I guess. Maybe the result is yellow or a probably-less-than-holy tangerine-lemon hybrid because Ele is so bad at ... everything, though.

Silk is renewable, though. All you need are silkworms and the right kind of tree. Or perhaps a lot of spiders. World trees, whilst technically a renewable source, probably take a very long time to grow. That tree on the Shinon estate is maybe twice Mona's height, which is positively tiny for any tree (and probably small enough to be stealable with enough men, shovels, a large bag and a wagon), and probably only branches are used to create kartia; killing world trees for them seems a bit short-sighted. Alternatively, steal a seed and grow your own.
Mithril seems like the least renewable of the lot, being typically a metal mined from the ground and usually not a grown thing.

I get it! You're, uh...
I like how this game uses the monologue screens. They're a good way to show the characters reflecting on the events of the story as it progresses. And thanks to Misty's ever-so-tragic reveal, we're up to speed on why Alana thinks it's odd that thieves have been creating so many Phantoms. It's a nice bit of world-building, and helps give the illusion that the cast is actively thinking, which makes for a stronger story. Bad writing, clumsy translation, or sloppy pacing all could have made a mess of the whole sequence, and I think it's sorta neat to see it pulled off. I think that's a reason I like this game as much as I do; most games either bungle the finer points or simply don't make the effort.

And yes, the Fire Arm is a really strong weapon at this point. Shame you can only get one per playthrough, but at least it's easy to get.

So far I've really enjoyed the writing, even when I try to find logic flaws I always end up being able to explain it away anyways. Maybe it's just confirmation bias?

My favorite part of the game really is how it does it's cutscenes though. The characters emote alot of movement and little things.
Everything the characters do have a little sound effect, and the game uses it music and sound effects to really punctuate some of the things that happen.
My only regret is that I can't really recreate that in screenshots. So I'm thinking about recording those scenes and put them in as an extra.
But then that gets me thinking "Why would anyone want to watch a 5 minute video of textboxes.". So I don't.
