Trying to equate him to Soulja is absurd tho.

They both had followings that grew out of largely local music bases while they were young, a couple catchy hits that got them known more nationally, largely disappointing major label debuts, and seemingly lost a lot of their following as they started on more "interesting" music decisions. It's obviously a bit early to write Keef off entirely, but it's definitely seemed his buzz has subsided greatly.

Musically, both make largely throwaway, lyrically simple but often catchy songs (which are heavily supported by production and hooks).

He put out Stepbrothers 2 with Starlito end of last year. I never been much of a fan but Starlito's legit, I'd recommend it if you like Don Trip.

He has yet to top Flight 2011 but it's hard to top an album entirely produced by Harry Fraud. Ah, yes, of course. They're both victims of a condition known commonly as "being a rapper." More specifically, "a rapper who wants to get radio play."

Whether you like the trends or not they are both kind of trendsetters. Soulja Boy absolutely crushed the internet to get big and made a shitload of money with ringtones and ringtone rap. Chief Keef made a huge name for himself through a few youtube videos.

Now though Soulja Boy just trend hops like CRAZY and does some okay producing. Can't really hate on him for it because he seems to be doing alright for himself even with all the fake money stunting. Chief Keef is the opposite of a trend hopper. He's making weird music with a lot of misses but a few hits. To steal a phrase from alansmithee he has "worse quality control than lil b". His new music isn't rehashing BFTD, Bang or Finally Rich. It's new and weird and interesting even though a lot of it isn't good I'm still glad it's being made.

Only the enlightened among us will understand but Soulja Boy can make fun songs

Soulja boy used to frequent these stick figure flash animation forums and would post his newest poo poo(stacks on deck ent. 1!!!!) like that "I got me some bapes" track and always got laughed at by almost everyone on the site, then crank that happened and everyone was like drat that's awesome and was all proud. That's my soulja boy story thanks for reading.

I don't like Macklemore as a rapper but this is a good interview (because it isn't really about Macklemore per se so much as about rap and cultural appropriation and such)

edit2: the conversation around minute 12 is worth hearing too
edit3: I ended up watching the whole thing, and it's worth watching. Macklemore does under 1/3 of the talking (probably less) if you're worried about having to listen to him the whole time (assuming you're interested in what they are talking about)

vvvv I know what you mean, I don't know if I'll make it through the whole hour, but minutes 3-6 are at least worth listening to if nothing more to see that he has a good head on his shoulders and it seems like he learned to shut the gently caress up and listen after the Jewish mockery incident vvvv

I listened to some of the Macklemore interview and no offense to him but there is nothing he can say that would be interesting. He said exactly what a white person is supposed to say about race and asking him questions about police brutality and rap music is just regurgitation.

You're right about this and that's not so different from what he actually says (particularly at around the 12 minute mark). The differentiation made though is that silence on the matter isn't substantively different from acceptance of the status quo, so he has been struggling with how to deal with it in a way that doesn't take away from the black organizers and activists who need to be given the spotlight on these issues.

It's Ebro who really drives the conversation in the interview though and it's the conversation between the three of them, not just what Macklemore has to say, that is what makes the whole thing interesting.
