bitcoin isn't going to clearly and spectacularly collapse in a single instant while we watch, it's just going to silently pass the point of no return where the streams of mainstream attention and new users stop growing and start to irreversibly dry up. this has almost certainly already happened and we're just watching the remaining true believers, who are too emotionally invested to write off their financial losses, burn off one by one

i just bought something 2 days ago using bitpay

you all think coinbase and bitpay are scams because you don't know how they work.

if there are a bunch of people willing to trade bitcoin for dollars

and there are also people willing to accept dollars for bitcoin

then you have a situation where bitpay and coinbase can exist.

all coinbase and bitpay do is sit in the middle.

i thought they worked by making it so that merchants can 'accept bitcoin' and never actually see a single butt, while quite likely the people who are 'spending' bitcoin are immediately repurchasing it, which is really where the entire thing seems to derail into a clown car.

coinbase seems to be doing alright connecting the people who want to accept dollars for products to the people who want to pay dollars to be told that they are trading bitcoins for products while nothing of the sort is actually happening. that's a viable (if unscrupulous) service but its success doesn't boost bitcoin, it just shows that bitcoiners are dumb as hell

bitpay on the other hand takes in nothing but bitcoins and emits nothing but dollars so either they have the monetary equivalent of the philosopher's stone or it's unsustainable for one reason or another (VC funding runs out, bitcoin market crashes, everyone involved is arrested for financial crimes)

Ok, lets say for a minute that bitcoin actually goes to the moon and it reaches, say a $100,000 price-per-coin.

Now, I think we can can agree that, as it always happens (with bitcoin and a shitload other things) miners will increase their hashing until they are barely eking a profit. This means that, every 10 minutes, ~2,500,000 dollars worth of electricity and equipment (via depreciation costs) will be used to "power" (since it doesn't actually improve the performance of the system) bitcoin. 360 million dollars per day, 131.4 billion per year.

So, who does this benefit? not the miners since their actual profit margin will be pretty much the same. Not the users, since the network speed and performance is the same, not the non-users since valuable electricity is being used and lots of pollution is created.

So that leaves us with the electric companies, hardware manufactures, and the HODLers. The HODLers will surely benefit but, once a ~300 dollars HODL bitcoin is actually sold then that's it. So, in fact, only the electric companies and manufacturers benefit.

So why should the coins go to the moon?

if its so obviously going to happen, then why hasn't it happened yet? furthermore, why hasn't the network been hacked to its knees yet? if the protocol is supposed to be so lovely, why can the sony hackers also take down bitcoin? shouldn't bitcoin be an easier target than a multinational corporation?
because there's no incentive at the moment. there's very little financial demand for transaction space in blocks, and the rewards are still pumping out a sizable amount of bitcoins with every block. once it goes down to 12 and every block is full, they'll have to find new ways to make money.

DAT NIGGA HOW posted:

realistically, any change that would result in a hard fork would have to be done with the miners and asic manufacturers working together.

miners who've sunk tens of millions of dollars into hardware, locations, power, setups, etc. have negative incentive to cooperate with anything like this. if there's another .7/.8 fork, nobody is gonna go to the new version that has no hashing power, no transactions being processed, etc. why would a mining farm want to reup on a warehouse full of ASICs just so they can be compensated less per transaction.
