The A-series is nice and all but it isn't "cutting edge hardware design", it's only real advantage vs the Tegra and Atom seem to be some battery life. Even then they didn't design the manufacturing process or anything they used the Samsung HKMG process, not to say they aren't using it well or they didn't make something good but I often hear about Apple is designing all this amazing cutting edge tech and I would really like to get to the bottom of it. To not derail this too much here's Anandtech talking about the A5 http://www.anandtech.com/show/5742/apples-ipad-24-also-uses-32nm-a5-s5l8942-soc

There isn't anything. It turns out that selling overpriced toys to rich idiots is more lucrative than the Android strategy of masterfully creating a tool for the professional.

Hey guys this isn't a thread about Apple vs Android or poo poo like that. The point of what I said was mostly that those guys seemed to be smart dudes who enjoyed sharing their smart ideas with other people, and Apple is a company that hates sharing knowledge and ideas with outsiders. Given their recent history running a tech site to produce information for wide audiences, it seemed like a weird choice compared to a company like Qualcomm that is always talking about the inner workings of their SoC and in-house CPU cores.

Hey, Jon Stokes at Ars is great with CPU stuff last I checked.

Jon Stokes stopped writing for Ars in 2011. He runs AllOutdoor now.

If you're going to mention Jon Stokes you have to mention his totally excellent CPU book - Inside the Machine.
It's out of date as it only goes up to the C2D but it's very thorough on the things it covers.

I don't know why copies of this are so incredibly expensive.

It's expensive because it gets used as a textbook in some courses.

If you're a really smart dude whose smart ideas are read/appreciated by hundreds of thousands of people, I can see the appeal of working for a company that can implement those smart ideas in hardware form and get them into the hands of hundreds of millions of people.

It takes a long rear end time doing that for Apple. Especially if what you're doing isn't even in the mobile arena.

What does Anand specialise in then, nothing that can have mobile applications.? I know Klug is a camera / optics guy.

I totally forgot to find a thread when this happened -- their content still seems decent, as of now. In-depth Snapdragon review, still have their heavy-duty testbenches and such -- I wonder if they will continue with that.

It'll never quite be the same though. :smith:

The A8 and A8X CPU cores are actually pretty impressive and they are faster and more architecturally complex than most other ARM-based designs. It's just that CPU performance in smartphones isn't exactly critically important right now so Apple's single core performance advantage doesn't really mean too much. There's nothing unique there architecturally but I would definitely describe them as "cutting edge."
