I work for General Dynamics, a company that is suckling on the US government's teat. They would never risk their sweet military industrial complex relationship with the government by accepting bitcoins.

I use bitwage.co (I do not work for them, just happy that I can get paid in Bitcoin).

I set up my direct deposit to the account number they provided me and my last paycheck was all converted to bitcoins automatically. My bank never saw a penny of my paycheck.

That is the first step in dumping my bank forever.

For spending money I usually sell on localbitcoins for a profit anyway so I always have some cash on hand. And pretty much anything I want online can be paid in Bitcoin.

Romania’s Only Bitcoin Exchange Shuts Down Due To Disgruntled Programmer
Posted by Sophie Schuhmacher on 4 January 2015 | Comments

Statement on BTCXchange Website

On December 16, Romanian bitcoin exchange, BTCXchange.ro, urged all of its users to withdraw bitcoin and fiat from the site. The explanation offered was simply left at “security reasons”. A similar message was repeated the following day, only adding that they did not have access to the servers the site was running from.

The country’s only bitcoin exchange’s trading volume fell from its usual 50 bitcoins to 3 on the announcement and now sits at 0, according to BNC Data. The business allowed users to trade the Romanian leu for bitcoin in an environment similar to established exchanges like Coinbase or BitStamp. On a thread announcing the temporary closure of the exchange one former user said, “It was a great exchange. The engine worked perfectly, and everything was nice. Too bad.”

Despite the security concerns, several people in the Romanian section of Bitcointalk.org have posted they have been able to withdraw their funds without any problems.

A few days after the second announcement the exchange announced the problem had still not been resolved and the issue was their main programmer who refused to give up the code he took from the site.

there's some gems in the comments on this one

* it turns out he's not receiving 100% of his paycheck in bitcoin, he actually gets paid in dollars. he just had a bitcoin paycheck service set up a bank account # and configured his employer's direct deposit system to pay into it.

* said service nominally skims off 1% so right there he's only getting 99%. the service also uses some weighted average-of-exchanges formula for calculating the spot price at the time of buy. naturally the possibility that this formula could be skewed towards the service (or changed on a whim) does not occur to him or any of the other reddit coiners

* he used to get paid in dollars through his own bank acct, converted them to bitcoins himself, then converted the bitcoins to euros (he's an american getting paid by general dynamics but working/living in europe apparently). this new system is ~superior~ because it lets him escape the tyranny of having his own bank account

* despite all this he claims to be making a profit by turning around selling the bitcoins on localbitcoins, which is (a) lol on its face and (b) meta lol because the headline and story are written to make it sound like he's totally a dude who has escaped the chains of fiat money and banksters

they're so very desperate to make it sound like there is a vibrant bitcoin economy which lets you conduct all your financial transactions in bitcoin, but it's always middlemen conversion "services" all the way down

Why Bitcoin is dropping and why you should be buying.
January 04, 2015, 06:22:02 PM
#1
All I'm hearing from the forum is the imminent death of bitcoin due to the relatively small drop in price in dollar terms of Bitcoin. I see this as an early sign that a financial collapse is approaching and therefore the perfect time for wise investors to buy. I don't know if people are familiar with the work of Jim Willie of the Golden Jackass but I recommend him, he's fringy and controversial but he has always said that the sign the system is collapsing and the dollar is on its death bed will be a massive rise in the dollar not a drop.

This also is a sign of a deriveratives implosion too. I think we will go lower, very low in fact (in dollar terms) and then we will get a spike up that will shock even seasoned bitcoiners. The absolutely only reason I'm not buying Bitcoin is I have no available fiat. If you are holding dollars then anytime from now is a good time to buy if you hold a longer tem perspective.

another bitstamp story

quote:

Bitstamp is apparently broken or hacked. I suggest not depositing coins there till they respond. (self.Bitcoin)

submitted 6 minutes ago * by Tsuyoku_Naritai

A few hours ago I made 2 deposits to Bitstamp. After lagging 7 confirmations behind on the blockchain, they each disappeared from the incoming transactions list WITHOUT updating my balance, which still sits at zero bitcoins. No transfers or sales have been made under the account and there is no indication that it's been compromised. Bitstamp haven't contacted me. Coins from one of the deposits has already been transfered to address https://blockchain.info/address/1JoktQJhCzuCQkt3GnQ8Xddcq4mUgNyXEa[1] which I assume belongs to Bitstamp.

Has anyone else managed to deposit bitcoins there successfully in the last hour or so? Has anyone else had an issue? (I need to go now but if anyone else has, then it's an emergency so all please upvote this post for visibility. If not, then maybe it's just some crazy new KYC game of theirs).

SpaceBIT claim to be in the process of partnering with banks and exchanges and comply with local regulations and jurisdictions, although it is unclear what sorts of regulations would apply in this case.
Pavlo Tanasyusk has claimed

quote:

We’ve created the business case and checked the feasibility of the technology, including costs, timescales and risks. We’ve checked the revenue potential and we’ve engaged with hundreds of interested individuals identifying the right team we need to proceed. We have done the necessary research and preparation to make sure that this project will work

although there was no indication of the business model.

As part of their initial proposal, the company is working on implementing both crypto-currencies like Bitcoin and digital currencies like VEN into the system. In order to establish this system, SpaceBIT plans to launch a constellation of satellites orbiting the globe, which would be able to provide access to this payment infrastructure especially in remote parts of the world with under-developed existing payment systems. The satellites would also be depositories of digital cash (like Ven). The SpaceBIT team believes that this project will be able to bring cheap and secure payment systems to currently unbanked populations.

Exploring Bitcoin's Price (without Conspiracy) (self.Bitcoin)
submitted 48 minutes ago by ExpatJosh
My theory, or a theory, is that bitcoin's price (not unlike Gold) runs counter to other investments. As gas prices drop, and the economy stumbles into an illusion of recovery, the price of BTC declines. This happens because BTC as an investment is fundamentally about staving off the losses of market crashes.
With this in mind, it isn't more apps or more education or more b2b applications or less mining which will propel bitcoin's price. It is the inevitable economic decline (collapse).
Opinions?

I don't give a F what happens. I'm holding. Here's why. (self.Bitcoin)

quote:

Bitcoin, has the best chance of ending the tyrannical state than anything else in human history. Do I care if another crypto-currency succeeds? No. I care that the ultimate lie of democracy and the violent existence of the state and its ruling class are brought to their knees, for good. Bitcoin sits at the head of the table in this aspect, and I will support it even to its bitter, bitter end if need be. There will not be an end of course, only ups and downs as voluntary peaceful markets decide it's value, as everything should be. Bitcoin lacks something that has existed since the beginning of time, which I find extremely interesting scares the vast majority. The proverbial gun.

People like control, they like to think they are in control, they like to forget the fact that they will inevitably one day, die... like every other human being will. They attempt to push that thought away by using the gun of the state and the lie of democracy to do away with this reality for one more day. Bitcoin and crypto-currency bring this reality back into the light... back into your face... and you must face it. You have no control. You never had control. Life, and liberty will always find away. gently caress you, gently caress your gun, and gently caress your immorality. Life, liberty, and a stateless society forever. Bitcoin.

I hear it's better to transfer in bitcoin... but how do I do it so it's worth my while? (self.Bitcoin)

I have money in my home country's bank account, I'm abroad and I've lost my bank card and it's a little costly to send it to a friends account and it will also take too long.
I thought a good idea would be to buy some bitcoin and sell it, transferring the money to my friends account. I checked on localbitcoins and the price to buy is currently 300eur/bit but to sell it's only 230, obviously ridiculous.
So my question is this, how do I go about this so I don't lose any more than say 10%? Is it possible?
Thanks!

Yeah you can open an account with coinbase or circle and sell the BTC to them once you've linked it to your bank account. Their spread with be much smaller.

basically they expect any form of government to implode once bitcoin somehow takes over, yet none of them seem to realise that like 99% of the info on the desk of the irs is self-reported by either companies (payroll, revenue) or citizens (salary, revenue), so even if somehow found the right lamp to rub and got their wish, people aren't magically going to stop paying their taxes

at the very least the sacrosanct captains of industry need to present financials to their stockholders, so right there there's fiscal info
