Vault of Satoshi is Closing. (self.vos)
submitted 7 minutes ago by vos_team - stickied post
Vault of Satoshi will be closing on February 5th, 2015. Although new deposits will no longer be accepted, rest assured, you will have plenty of time to finalize any trades and withdraw any outstanding funds with all of the convenience and expeditiousness that you’re used to. Please ensure that all of your withdrawal requests are submitted by February 5th.
We expect there will be some speculation as to why the Vault is going to be sealed forever, and we’d like to reassure the community that it has absolutely nothing to do with insolvency, stolen funds, or any other unfortunate scenario. To this day we are proud to have run the first full proof-of-reserve exchange in the industry, with strict compliance and security regimes. Our decision stems from opportunities presented by a new business that has forced us to reexamine our priorities.
Our founders and team of developers began work on a new, non-cryptocurrency project about 6 months ago, which has since become quite successful. We are forced to make a choice on where to expend our efforts, as we simply do not have time to continue operating both businesses. We feel splitting our focus would be a disservice to the customers of Vault, so although our competitors may lack some of the features, currencies, and innovations that Vault brought to the Canadian market, they will serve you well for your basic exchange needs.
We are still true-believers, and think Satoshi Nakamoto has set in course something that will change the world for the better. Thank you loyal Vault customers for joining us on one of the most exciting adventures of our time! There’s no doubt that this is just the beginning, and we will continue to watch from the sidelines as history unfolds, with Bitcoin becoming more understood, accepted, and appreciated every day.
Sincerely,
The Vault of Satoshi Team

Sysadm here! I'm somewhat suprised about the hysteria many people here are expressing now. It's like they never heard about a site getting compromised before even though the Sony incident happened just a few weeks ago..

To me it seemes that Bitstamp has been quick on the information part and is taking proper measurement (taking the site to a halt until they figure things out). This is key while they debug what happened and people should be patient until they find out what's wrong!

To the people bitching about regulations; Bitstamp has been under regulations for a long time. Theese regulations is the verification process amongst others. Due to this, I figure Bitstamp has been in the need for spending more of their resources on this instead of what they could have deployed in security measures.

And as far as security regulation goes, there can never be one. Security is a skill, not a policy for politicians to decide over...

Remember that time Bank of America, HSBC, and Scotiabank's deposits were compromised? Wait, it hasn't happened? Well how about the other big banks? None? Well, imagine what would happen if they were compromised! you could lose your deposit! They are insured? Oh well, how about an unrelated company in a totally different area, suffering a much less serious hack like Sony?

or how about when target got hacked and then everyone replaced their credit cards and target paid for credit monitoring for everyone else and everyone compromised filed for fraud and got their money back

or when home depot got hacked and the exact same thing happened

As crazy as it sounds, 18 billion bits is not that bad. If you look at their total fees (30 billion bits per year?), and assume their profit is a fair percent of those fees, they can maybe afford to take that hit, maybe not today, but eventually. For sure, they'll learn from their mistake and keep their hot wallet smaller in the future.

BTW, if you check any big thread in r/bitcoin and search for Rassah, your are pretty likely to hit gold. He just loves to whiteknight the big players, like some sort of furry, dumb Smithers. It's a shame he doesn't post more often.

Since the MtGox fiasco, exchanges have improved their security and keep reserves to cover hot wallet losses. Same as FDIC, but self-insured.

[–]wudaokor 8 points 2 hours ago

I'm not quite sure you know what insured means. If they don't keep enough in reserves then well, poo poo, you're out of luck. With FDIC it doesn't matter gently caress all what the bank does, you will get your money back. Big, big, big difference.

[–]Rassah -1 points 2 hours ago

Of course I know what insurance means. You can insure yourself through a company, where a bunch of people can pool their reserves and someone guestimates how much in reserves they need to cover losses (insurance, including FDIC, never keeps 100% reserve, so if too many users file a claim, the insurance won't have enough to cover everyone), OR you can self insure by keeping enough in reserves to cover any losses you might expect, such as by keeping the same amount as in your hot wallet in reserves, so if its stolen, you can cover 100% of it.

Self insurance is more expensive, since you are not sharing your risk with others, but it is much better, because you know your risk level much better than the insurance company could, are guaranteed to have the money if you need it, and keep the money as yours as long as you stay safe, instead of paying it to the insurance company, which creates a huge incentive to stay safe so you don't have to spend that money. When I used to work as a financial analyst and sold financial products, including insurance, I would always suggest that people only buy a little bit of life insurance while they don't have anything save up, and gradually reduce their coverage as their savings grew. No sense in paying someone else for $100k coverage if you have $100k in your IRA already.
