I also find it funny as hell that Anders, who is actively possessed by a demon, keeps complaining about Merrill using blood magic to consort with demons, like she's the bigger idiot (they're both idiots).

Anders believes that Justice was a good spirit pre-possession (because justice is a good thing, right?) who was twisted once they merged, but while Merrill is indeed an idiot, I like that she calls him out on this in a random party banter:

quote:

Merrill: Are you all right?
Anders: I nearly killed an innocent girl. How could I be all right?
Merrill: I’m sorry.
Anders: You’re sorry? For me? This could be you! You could be the next monster threatening helpless girls!
Merrill: Anders… There’s no such thing as a good spirit. There never was.
Merrill: All spirits are dangerous. I understood that. I’m sorry that you didn’t.

The fact that most characters you meet can be responded to with a "gently caress off" as soon as you meet them is probably my favorite little thing in the game.

That's something I also liked about The Walking Dead. Something that bothered me a lot about the show was that when the characters found out that everyone in the TWD world is infected their comments ranged from "oh no i can't believe this :geno:" to "i am a character that has not spoken in a while and oh no also", but when this is revealed to you in Telltale's The Walking Dead like the first thing you can say in response is a big ol' "WHAT!!". Like sure you could pick the other three more rational and calm options but come on why would you not take the opportunity to go "OH gently caress" when it is revealed that every person alive will become a zombie when they die forever.

I bought Dungeon Keeper 1 & 2 on GOG after feeling a bit nostalgic, but god drat it's awesome remember how intense Bullfrog was about putting the tiniest details into their games.

For one thing, you can possess the creatures that inhabit your dungeon, and depending on what the creature is, its viewpoint looks different. Flies have multiple eyes that fracture the screen into separate parts, the Dark Knights have their vision obscured by their helmet, vampires, hellhounds, etc. all have unique first person viewpoints.

The way the monsters are characterized and represented in this game is pretty awesome too, everything has a distinct personality and the really well done sprite work/3D modelling all does it great favors, the animations especially have a ton of personality, but what makes it special is that each monster even has its own likes and dislikes, and habits. Put a Bile Demon with some Skeletons and they'll get pissy and get into a fight, because the fat Bile Demons are offended by the sight of meatless Skeletons. Spiders hate flies, Vampires and Warlocks hate noise, etc. It makes designing your dungeon fun and unique because depending on the starting layout, you need to actually think about how you will compartmentalize everything so that no one gets pissy.
Monsters get upset if paydays are missed, and they all have different reactions, the Horned Reaper might go on a rampage and kill everything, Bile Demons will go to town on your hatcheries and overeat, the list goes on.
They all like specific thinks, Dark Elves love patrolling and guarding, and will actively seek out those positions, it's one thing that your creatures are intuitive and will go off and do things on their own, it's another that they essentially remove the micromanagement of you having to staff everything. Warlocks are naturally drawn to libraries, Trolls to smithies, Hellhounds to the fighting pit and training chamber, etc.

There are even small details like the differences between creatures getting slapped. Skeletons typically have no reaction, whereas most creatures improve efficiency but get upset for a little. Do it to the BDSM inspired Dark Mistresses and they'll moan in pleasure and actually improve in happiness.

The excellently voice acted adviser (dripping with malice and sarcastic joy) will tell you to go to bed if the system clock is late, you'll get creepy messages when feel moons are set to occur on the calender. Sometimes rival AI Keepers will fax you mocking messages if your printer is turned on, the list goes on.
There's so much cool atmospheric poo poo, when the good guys are probing your defenses for unfortified walls to break through, you can hear the thudding of their hammers as they test the earth.
If a creature wins a jackpot at the casino, they'll all start dancing as a disco ball descends and the game literally samples Disco Inferno.
The sound design is still some of the best I've ever encountered, the dull murmuring of Warlocks poring over books in the Library, the swinging apparatus and smacks and punches in the training room, the clucking of chickens in the hatchery, the dull droning silence of your creatures lairs, it just perfectly evokes the setting.

Just an awesome game with so many little things. Bullfrog was one of the best developers to have ever been in the game. I still wonder what happened to most of the staff.
Also it's pretty much proof that Molyneux was just a pompous blowhard since he couldn't make a single game with the scope, detail, and design ambition of any he did with the Bullfrog team when he was on his own.

Try playing the game at 12:55 am on Saturday morning (or just change your computer clock and load up a game). After a few minutes something wonderful happens.

Since we've had keyboards they've always been a QWERTY rectangle pretty much. Games don't need to try to do it differently for fear if they don't it'll break immersion in the game's world.

It's nothing to do with immersion. QWERTY or other keyboard-like interfaces are good when you don't need to slide from one key to another to enter text, when you can arbitrarily hit any key in sequence in the same amount of time from any other key. That doesn't mean they're automatically the best interface when you do have to; the things that make keyboards good don't apply with controller interfaces. They're okay, but that doesn't mean it's not worth trying alternatives.

In Red Faction: Guerilla the ammo crates you can use to re-stock your ammo and change your weapons will explode if you detonate anything near them or fire on them enough. It makes perfect sense that a metal box full of explosives would be so volatile but it's the only game in recent memory that actually does that instead of having them be an indestructible part of the level geometry.

Chard posted:

Typing your username in on a virtual QWERTY keyboard with a d-pad would take 19 button button presses, not counting capitalization. With the BG&E system it would take a combined effort of less than two rotations of an analog stick. Most people would consider the latter a lot easier

But I know exactly where to go for each next input and don't need to worry about overshooting or undershooting the letter, which is easy when you're shoehorning analog control into a place it doesn't belong

Have you used it in the game? That doesn't really happen, analog sticks are precise enough to hit the letter most of the time. And overshooting and correcting is still faster than navigating a dpad grid.

Yeah, you might as well be worried about overshooting a letter on a analog-pad keyboard by pressing the arrow button one too many times. The BG&E one is a lot more fluid, I remember really liking it when I used it.

In Far Cry 2 setting fire to an ammo crate would cause the rounds to cook off, firing bullets wildly in all directions. It was pretty awesome and I wish more games would do stuff like that.

Been playing QP Shooting - Dangerous!!, a silly cutesy bullet hell game I bought because of the Steam sale recently. Something I really appreciate is that they've definitely taken steps to prevent some of the more frustrating bullet hell deaths, like being killed by a projectile that materialized 2 inches from you (bullets don't become damaging projectiles until they've existed for about half a second or more) or being hit multiple times in succession because your i-frames didn't last long enough (when you get damaged, the invincibility frames continue until you are no longer on top of any bullets). It's a good introduction to bullet hell games for the casual player who might want to try that sort of genre out.

BIG KOOL TELLIN' Y'ALL TO KEEP IT TIGHT

I loved both DK games when they came out - I used to play with my stepdad and friends quite a bit just because it was so hilarious and a blast to mess around in. Out of curiosity, I still have my original copies of both games - do the GOG ones work pretty well under Windows XP and 7 now? I've got a really old laptop with XP on it that I loaded DK2 on to, but it'll randomly crash out to the desktop at certain points when I play, no rhyme or reason to it. I'd have no problem shelling out the $10 for both DK games on the GOG site so long as they work across XP and 7 without crashing.

Also love the DK2 narrator guy, his voice is just so perfect for the game :allears:

I've heard the Fable games get a lot of flack, but I for one love their quirky, barely-trying-to-bother-being-serious style more than I hate their various issues. Fable III probably had my favorite example of this. As part of the main storyline, you have to gain the trust of the Super Secret Underground Resistance so you can join them in their fight against your evil brother. To do this, you have to obtain a certain amount of quest tokens, which you get for going around and completing various other missions in the game. However, you can also get them, albeit only one at a time, by interacting with the various inhabitants of Albion...tell them a joke, do a chicken dance, hug them, that sort of thing. So if you have opened the Rude Interactions ability after leveling up and you have the patience; it is possible to gain the trust of the Super Secret Underground Resistance simply by farting on every single person you meet.

As for a little thing, in MGS2 you can sneak up on enemy soldiers and hold them up. While you have them held up you can shoot their radios to stop them calling their cronies for back-up.

While we're at weird UI choices: Metroid Prime 2: Echoes had a very fun one. Every menu was some kind of tree rotating around a central point, and you had to rotate the entire thing. The foremost branch was always selected, and every other branch would kind of float into view so that you knew at all times in which direction to rotate to select it.

Cumbersome? A little.

Slower than a grid-based menu? Perhaps.

Super futuristic and awesome? Oh yes.
