A city that was to live by night after the wilderness had passed. A city that was to forge out of steel and blood-red neon its own peculiar wilderness.

SLR was like 4 years ago though. I'm not sure he has it anymore (which is unfortunate, because that was legit one of the top 5 "whoa" moments I've had listening to rap).

Lasers was a shitshow that I don't blame him for at all, but F&L2 he has to take some of the blame imo, simply because he was doing that super preachy style he's taken to a lot more recently.

But man, SLR...

To be fair he's always been pretty preachy. F&L and The Cool were extremely preachy but yeah, F&L 2 seemed like almost all him, and yeah preachy as poo poo, though it was still an improvement over Lasers.

But honestly he's been dropping some solid poo poo since then, just not anything that's getting on an album or talked about much.

Lillies, Mazinger, Haile Selassie are all pretty great and way closer to F&L, and The Cool quality stuff. Even SLR 2/SLR 3 while nowhere near as good as the first one are decent. Piece of Paper Cup of Jesus, was also pretty good.

I'm really interested to see what happens once Tetsuo and Youth Drops and he is released from Atlantic. As that removes a bunch of his excuses.

Does anyone have any strong feelings on the new exquire tapes? I listened to merry ex-mas a few times, it's uneven and has some bullshit samples at the beginning of half the songs that last 30-60 seconds. I see more and more artists make terrible formatting choices like this, it drags the whole thing down. Sometimes the raps are good but the production is not very fun to listen to.

I'm guessing these are throw away tracks from whatever the proper follow up to kismet is? I haven't had a chance to listen to the other one yet.

Yeah they're not great, he clearly had some ( a lot of) help making Kismet a cohesive product.

sadly when i heard he was dropping 2 mixtapes around the same time i figured they werent gonna be very good. I had kinda forgotten about them for now but thanks for validating my fears.

Also foreign rap should probably either have its own thread or just stop posting about it altogether.

I'm not sure that's fair. I know in some interview he was talking about how he had no problem putting out stuff sitting on his hard drive that wasn't all the way finished/polished, which is what these new tapes seem like. Was saying how getting it out at all was better than just having things sitting there that nobody hears, especially when he wasn't likely to finish them or go back.

Lost in Translation was good, as was merry muthafucking xmas (the first one) and I wanna say man in the high tower?, but he also dropped a couple of mediocre things in there too.

yeah merry exmas 2 is just a silly throwaway tape and live from the danger room is just old unreleased tracks. i have complete faith that his next album is going to be fantastic because lost in translation and power & passion were both great.

I was going to say, the entire point is so people that have no idea about the subject can learn, so nerdy white guy is presumably asking the same questions someone who doesn't know that much about the scene would ask.
