yeah the dumbest thing about that paper isn't the IoT stuff (which could theoretically be a good idea) but the idea that my tv could turn it off because my washing machine outbid it for electricity, or that my washing machine is going to delay running until midnight to save me 3 whole cents

people buy energy-saving appliances all the time, it is a significant selling point

the problems are that
  • using the same amount of electricity at off-peak hours is completely meaningless unless consumers are getting charged differently; afaik, that's really uncommon over the course of a day (as opposed to, say, seasonal differences),
  • even then you're at best talking about saving a buck on the monthly bill,
  • the empirical evidence is that people will take advantage of cheaper prices to increase consumption but necessarily decrease consumption at higher prices, probably because electricity is still really loving cheap for most people, and
  • most appliance uses are sensitive to time-shifting; e.g. i want my toast now, i don't want my noisy dishwasher to run at 3am, and i want the clothes i washed at 7pm to be dried sometime in the next few hours instead of sitting around wet while people gradually turn off their tvs and go to bed

there is a tipping point at some level of automation where these things become more acceptable, like if i can just tell my household robot to make sure my exosuit is clean for tomorrow's crab-train commute, but that may or may not be a level of automation that assumes away power costs anyway

the reason DR and poo poo hasn't really caught on yet at the appliance level is because there's no good standard and no one gives a poo poo about conserving electricity

well people do, but not beyond "run this at night because you live somewhere that cuts rates at night".

and when you have that, a simple timer cutoff works

thats common in weird places like the uk where you can save 33% using power overnight.

the thing is the guy's proposed model rests on some weird assumption that if you use a bunch of power at the same time, your electrical provider starts charging extra money? like its something that only makes sense if you're permanently connected to a building geenerator and there can only be a limited amount of power used at one time or the whole thing shorts

industrial customers get charged on peak power and stuff, there's lot of complicated formulas (power factors, peak demand, peak times). residential customers aren't because they don't draw that much amperage

i'm signed up for a program that lowers my power rate all summer, except it goes up from 4-7pm for 10 random weekdays.

and i get some little thing that's supposed to display real time power use, but it's been broken for two years. i just start my dishwasher after dark during summer, peak electric usage solved.
