Audio recording does get a little more complicated though. Look up if your state is one or two party consent for audio.

A lack of consent just means it wouldn't be admissible in court, right? You could still record for your own records.

Even if the audio isn't admittable, just strip the audio from the file.

In public spaces, you generally don't have to worry about consent. Not a lawyer, though. Lots of states have one-party recording rules, which means that only one person needs to know that there is a recording occurring for it to be admissible.

Being a Brit, we don;t have to worry about all that nonsense.

What does worry me is dying in a car accident, having my dashcam played as evidence and having my last words be noted as my singing along (badly) to Rocky Horror.

I am looking to get my dad a dash camera for his upcoming birthday since he has expressed interest in the past on them. I know the G1W is talked about a lot in this thread and I have read the last 4 or 5 pages. I would like one a bit nicer than the G1W and I don't care to go the Mobius route. This product Mini 0803 Ambarella is a pretty nice looking unit for features but the reviews seem to leave me wanting something different. We are in Salt Lake Utah, so we will experience hot days and cold days. He doesn't street park so it won't be subject to extreme temps all the times but will be when he is out and about. If we had a budget of ~$130-150, what camera would be the Goon Approved (TM) choice?

After trying with a cheaper camera (Mini 0801) and getting frustrated with reliability and firmware issues I went for something more pricey and got the PowerUCC Panorama II. I've been using it for more than a year and the only problems I had came from the SD card itself. A microSD card inside an adapter will not tolerate hot weather. Getting the recommended Samsung SD card fixed that problem.

I got it for around $185 back then, and I'm not sure the price has gone down (although they've released some updates I think?), but if you can swing it, I do think it is worthwhile. I got it from shpkorea on eBay but there is now a U.S. based seller with an Amazon store I think, Pier 28. I'd check out the feedback on dashcamtalk.com.

If $185 is too much check out
https://dashcamtalk.com/
Scroll down and check out the charts and look at reliability. Check out the forums there, etc.

For gently caress's sake, I had a dipshit in a Corvette drive right at me up a one way freeway feeder ramp this evening, flashing his brights just like I was as we sat stationary in a Mexican standoff. I finally went around him and he sped off over the loving blind hill, enclosed 2-lane ramp. I called 911 on them, though of course being a 'vette there was no front plate. I knew the information would be basically useless to the emergency services by the time I stopped and called them, it's not a long ramp. It was supremely frustrating trying to explain the ramp to the operator, plus it terminates at the transit center, but not in the transit center, so she rapidly bounced me back to Metro, who then had to bounce me right the hell back to HPD to explain myself a third time.

I've been meaning to get a dash cam, but haven't gotten around to it until now, going with the Mobius for front, and still mulling a G1W for the rear. There's a switched power jack back there already and everything.

Sorry for no footage, I just had to vent. Maybe I'll post up a quick video of the ramp and you can all tell me I'm overreacting...

(For those familiar with Houston's ever-changing west loop, it's the ramp that leads from just south of 18th by the Northwest mall, up over the train tracks and Hempstead highway, and down to Old Katy Road and the NW transit center.)

I live in Houston as well and know exactly what you're talking about. Houston should be renamed the city where drivers make turns from the center lane.

I agree, but every time I see someone going the wrong way on a surface street it's almost immediately followed by an embarrassed u-turn. I get that these ramps are unfamiliar, but I also just assume anyone driving in Texas understands that white lines separate lanes that travel one direction and yellow separate those traveling opposite directions. I mentioned this to my boss and he said his dad had this kind of accident, but with a tractor trailer traveling the wrong direction, and they met at the peak of the ramp leaving his dad in a coma.

I did order the Mobius plus a set of mounts, a 10' cable, and a super capacitor; looking forward to having it finally, I've wanted one for years.

You're in California right? Vehicle code bans dashcams recording audio without posted notices explicitly. Also, in an enclosed car is is probably a misdeamnor, so yeah, turn the audio off.

I got the Mobius like suggested a few months back, and it's just what I wanted: no screen, tiny like a pair of AA batteries, and with the super capacitor it's heat resistant but has enough juice to save the last file when I abruptly kill my ignition. The night performance is known for being average, but in daylight it looks great.

It sees better at night and in the day than the most popular cams out there though. There's really nothing that can touch it for the money.

Hypothetical: To those who have a dash cam and got in an accident: Did you just get details and forward the video to your insurance? What about police reports? I have a Mobi so it doesn't have a screen so I wouldn't be able to just up and show an officer what happened.

Wickerman

Boom, mothafucka!
As long as you don't get cited I wouldn't worry too much about it unless it's an accident that causes some debilitating injury. In that case, you can just put the video files on a flash drive or DVD and give it to the reporting officer later on. That's what I did when I recorded a crime at the end of last year.

As far as your insurance, when you give your statement just tell them you have video and they'll give you instructions on how to submit it.

In the US the odds of some shithead running towards your car and acting like you ran them over is very small. The main reason to have a dashcam is in the event that someone does something stupid and then tries to blame you. Out of the 5 or so incidents I have ever had, the camera would have solely been for "HOLY poo poo CAN YOU BELIEVE THIS poo poo" vs this is what really happened and no I did not try to murder a pedestrian.

There was a story back when I lived in Alaska of a small Cessna-style plane that had to do an emergency landing on the Seward highway just outside Anchorage.. mountains on one side, water that kills you in 2 minutes on the other so the pavement was the only flat place to go.

The claim was that one of the cars that were on the road at the time actually had rubber from one of the plane's tires smeared perfectly down the center of the roof. I never saw pictures to prove it, but that was the tale.

Someone once told me that there is some sort of traffic code where any roadshighways built have to have at least 1 mile per every 5 miles be straight and level for use as a runway in emergencies. Probably a bit of bullshit but it makes sense.

The plane hits the roof, the taxi/van/whatever hits the side guard and then rolls back to the left and comes to stop. Easier to see in the original video.
