I always thought the biggest thing they always gloss over is the point of transition from zombies being A Thing to the entire world being overrun by them and society collapsing. Even the guy who wrote World War Z admitted he couldn't think of a believable way to have slow zombies take over the world which is why there's nothing between the US Army losing the battle of Yonkers and the post-apocalypse when they've already taken over.

I don't see what that even entails different from any other family drama except for some foreboding music over wide shots of a city or slow-mo shots of kids on a playground or something.

I think AMC as a prestige network may have been a short-lived thing.

Well, this comes from the mouth of a bitter Frank Darabont, and was filtered through the mental giants over at AICN, so there's a few opportunities to call bullshit on this. But apparently Charlie Collier, who last I checked has been running development at AMC ever since The Walking Dead, is a short-sighted prick. He can talk the talk about how much story matters, but when the chips are down, he shows little respect for the creative end of the process. Again, that's Darabont talking; of course he'd be pissed at Collier after he shitcanned him from his own show. But considering how much trouble AMC has had launching a series that been on point from the start, or attracting some real heavy-hitters to the network that launched Mad Men and Breaking Bad (compare to FX and Guillermo del Toro, opinions of The Strain aside), I think there's at least some fire behind the smoke.

Seriously. I've never seen a reviewer get so hung up over a single throwaway joke:

:goonsay: posted:

My only problem with the pirate stuff stems from a single joke, the moment where the pirate king, Peter the Pillager (Hugh Bonneville), realizes he and Galavant know each other. “You know, we met before at Lilith Fair,” he says. Galavant looks at him, confused. “The Island of Les Bos?” Peter reminds him.

Like the random Jewish stereotypes (not to mention the name Sir Jean Hamm from episode two) it’s a setup with no payoff whatsoever. As hard as it is to make a reference so steeped in ‘90s pop culture work, it might have had a fighting chance had it been reconfigured into some kind of Medieval alternate reality. I’m not saying listing off Middle-Age alter egos of specific Lilith Fair performers would have been funny (“Natalie the Merchant,” perhaps? Eh, probably not.), but something in that vein would show that the writers are at least trying to be creative and not just throwing in any old reference that comes to their minds. As petty as it may seem to call out a solitary joke in a sequence that otherwise works quite well, the failed bit is ultimately representative of how easy Galavant’s humor becomes off-color.

The Walking Dead game by Telltale was really funny about this, the game opens with you driving from a courthouse to a prison and things go from fine to the post-apocalypse in the course of 5 minutes.

Well Netflix continues to stack paper

quote:

Netflix added 4.33 million members worldwide in the fourth quarter, ending the year with 57.4 million, more than what Wall Street analysts expected.

Shares of Netflix were up more than 13 percent after the closing bell on Tuesday once the results were known.

The streaming-media company said it earned $83.3 million in the quarter on $1.49 billion in revenue while Wall Street was expecting Netflix to report revenue of $1.48 billion. In the year-ago quarter, Netflix earned $48.4 million on revenue of $1.18 billion.

It's the subscriber additions, though, that will captivate investors, given that in the previous quarter Netflix missed expectations and offered weak guidance, causing the stock to sink 19 percent in a day.

Wall Street was expecting Netflix to add 1.79 million domestic streaming subscribers and 2.13 million international streaming subscribers. Netflix said Tuesday that net additions were 1.9 million and 2.43 million, respectively.

Again the shocker continues to be that there were almost four and a half million people in the world that didn't have netflix already.

Also not TV related but they are streaming The Interview starting tomorrow.

Did anyone watch Wolf Hall last night?

I caught it today and liked it. I wasn't super sold on some of the casting initially (namely Cromwell and Damian Lewis as Henry) but I think that was mostly because of the inevitable picture I built in my head of them from reading the books and they were both good in the show. Lewis especially has a really good "Annoyingly fake enthusiasm" face that he pulls off that works great for playing a king surrounded by subjects that are constantly talking behind his back.

Mark Gatiss as Gardiner is a perfect choice (how many versions of a snarky British politician has he played now?) and the scenes between him and Cromwell were predictably great. Jonathan Pryce as Wolsey was equally great casting, but it's a shame that the show starts with him already exiled/sick. I would've liked seeing more of an origin story with Cromwell learning from Wolsey, but that's way outside the scope of the show. I'm assuming the next episodes will focus a lot more on the scheming now that the introductions are mostly out of the way.

Speaking of which, I was surprised to find out that they're going to include things from Bring Up the Bodies as well. I guess it kind of makes sense to see Anne's whole arc, but it still seems like a lot to squeeze into 6 episodes. The first episode already felt a bit rushed in places because it had to do the thing TV pilots usually do where people just walk into a room, introduce themselves, and then leave and aren't seen again all episode. Covering two books worth of stuff in just the next 5 episodes seems like it's going to leave a whole lot out.

Yes in the Siffy sense that BSG was a one-off miniseries. If Sc-fi follows their practiced MO, it'll be about 136 Monkeys, 3 Gorillas, 8 web-capuchins and in the end be that monkey from outbreak, not George Cloony, the other one.

Yeah but there's really no buildup to a zombie apocalypse other than "shady government bioweapon experiment gone wrong" that then goes 0-60 in no time flat because zombies, which we've seen a zillion times before in the 5 minutes before the prison/coma/etc time skip in zombie stuff. Caprica had some cool ideas to explore, it just took way too long to get to it in favor of VR GTA/porn chat rooms.

It's nothing special. The characters are annoying, the writing is terrible and the action and effects aren't enough to bother watching. It was alright at first but I got over it pretty fast.

Now the 100 is the truly excellent show on the CW that people should be told to watch.
