Arrow/Flash are good but they really don't have much to say. If you're into that kind of stuff. POI I would easily qualify as a quality show even on the surface level but explore interesting and relevant themes and treat it with a certain amount of respect and gravity. Even The 100 (hell even Reign) explores certain themes and treat them with actual gravity than something like Arrow/Flash.

You just have to manage your expectations when watching season 1 of Person of Interest. It's entertaining, but literally a by-the-numbers CBS procedural where a computer that tells Ben Linus and Jesus Christ to kneecap bad guys every week. Greater plots and themes all emerge and the show becomes amazing, but it's all comes from that premise. Skipping episodes kinda misses the point.

I'm not a Root fan and hate that there's a de facto relationship between the two characters despite 1) Shaw showing no interest in Root and 2) Root being an abusive, predatory weirdo. I get that people still love Amy Acker from her Whedon stuff, but Root is just the worst character on the show.

PoI has a solid first season and an insanely good second season(so far). 1/4 the episodes would qualify for comedy even though the tone is still mostly serious, especially anything involving Tao, a recurring scumbag. It gets to the point where his 4th/5th appearance as a PoI has him quiz the guys who came to confront him, and when finding out they plan to kill him Tao goes "Oh poo poo, you guys need to get out of here, like right now" before John walks in to bust them up. There's also a great scene where John is in jail, the first few attempts to break him loose failed, and near the end when he does get on on his own, it the cuts to Harold dressed in full body armor loading a smoke grenade launcher panickly saying over the phone"I've got an escape plan and you're not going to like it but this is all that's left!" before he finds out John is free. Also, I may be wrong, but I think all of the heads of the 5 mob families are all former Sopranos actors.

Rageaholic Monkey posted:Questionable Carrie moments is like the majority of what Homeland is at this point, though. Everything single Homeland season 4 episode requires you to remember that a) Carrie is extremely bipolar b) Carrie hid said condition from the CIA for years, got caught, and underwent electroshock treatment c) Carrie slept with a major terrorist suspect d) Said terror suspect then blew up the CIA HQ according to common knowledge e) Carrie risked multiple ops to the point where an agent (Quinn) shot her to stop her from blowing an op f) Carrie is now in charge of a major CIA station, and a-e did not effect her rise to power in any way Then watch as Carrie makes terrible decision after terrible decision and somehow the show still expects you to route for her/support her when she's a colossal mess who fucks up constantly. Homeland fans will keep insisting "No you don't understand, its all about the slow burn you plebs" but in reality the show is a jumbled mess with a brilliant episode here and there that does nothing to diminish how moronic the show is in the other times.

Has any show had a worse fall from grace than Homeland? I watched the pilot for The Man in the High Castle, it was alright but aside from the concept and setting didn't have anything that really stood out. But if they make more then I'll watch it. PS. Person of Interest owns and the first season starts kinda shakey but constantly gets better and I think is pretty solid after episode 13 or so. I remember not really caring about the flashbacks, but they pay off by the end of the season. A lesser show would have dragged that poo poo out for the show's entire run. So far the second half of season 2 and the first half of season 3 are probably the high water mark of the show. Season 4 is pretty good so far too.

No Wave posted:In some sense, every episode is the same episode over and over - I'd be surprised if anyone could name a favorite episode of the show. But this is actually very true-to-life - usually people find themselves in the same sorts of conflicts, repeatedly, but in different contexts. Someone who finds themselves doing all of the lovely grunt work at their old job will probably find a way to end up doing that at their new job, as well. It's like as individuals, we're running the same run loop over and over, and our problems all end up taking the same tone even in different contexts. It seemed so grossly unfair that there was always this nasty feeling of mortification whenever Adam had to resolve something and Crosby's problems - even an accidental kid - end up turning out just fine for him with no pain or stress attached. (This changed a bit this season, with reality finally catching up to Crosby with the Luncheonette's failure.) How do you have a favorite episode of a show that, after the first season, is basically dedicated to showing miserable things happen to miserable people? I had to quit watching that show because it was just straight up depressing. Irish Joe posted:For gently caress's sake guys, stop listening to the people telling you to suffer through seven hours of garbage television. Nobody, not even PoI fans, like the first season. SKIP IT and get to the actual poo poo people have been praising in this, and many other, topics. I liked POI from the beginning, myself. I don't think it's really dire at any point unless you're one of those people that shits their pants over PROCEDURALS .

PoI's procedural stuff is competent but not that amazing, and it wasn't until the first Elias episode (and then the Rear Window one) that they really demonstrated what they could do with the show. I'm really, really glad I wasn't watching S1 as it aired. Metropolis posted:Has any show had a worse fall from grace than Homeland?

Regy Rusty posted:It's leagues better than Arrow in every way. That's the only part of your question I can answer. As much as I love POI the action scenes are executed poorly compared to how ambitious they are written. Almost everything in a shootout is done digitally in post so you get Amy Acker waving her guns akimbo in the vague direction this episode's legion of heavily armed opponents are who then fall over and lie there quietly with bullets in their legs. They film in New York where it's very hard to do any practical pyrotechnics so I understand why they do it, they should really just write less big action set pieces as they can't show them properly. The Reese vs. US Marshalls scene was one they did really well by showing very little of the actual action, just the confusion and panic.
