Another good Pavement-esque band: Starlight Mints

You catch their singer channeling Malkmus a lot of the time in his delivery, but their arrangements are a lot more involved than Pavement's ever were, even on Terror Twilight. I believe Starlight Mints usually performed with a cellist.

Anyway, try these tracks out:

Father John Misty's new album is due Feb. 10th and he's released two songs from it as teasers. This one, Chateau Lobby #4, is fantastic. I think Misty's album is one of my most anticipated despite a slew of pretty colossal releases this new year. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A6NuYJ0RzRg

Palace released an EP entitled Lost in the Night back in October of 2014. I recently heard this track on the radio and I had to share it. It's got this blues/classic rock vibe that for some reason reminds me of Jeff Buckley's Hallelujah. I haven't gotten around to listening to the rest of the EP, but I'm definitely putting it on a list of must-listens. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0D8IfbtUWfs

Awesome, he seems like a pretty fun guy to be hanging out with!

The new Sleater Kinney album is now streaming on Pitchfork and NPR. Any first impressions? Won't be able to listen to in until after work and I'm curious apparently they have moved away from the poppier The Woods and gone back to the short punchier and scruffy style they begun with.

I've been enjoying the new album by Ghost Culture foot tapping electro reminds me a bit of Fujiya & Miyagi and Animal Collective with the soft spoken vocals, a bit more housey though.

My new S-K impressions: they've toned down the hard rock extravagance and the extreme distortion on everything from "The Woods" (where are you getting pop when you listen to that album :psyduck:), but have kept around the guitar heroics from that album. The songs are shorter, but along the lines of the tunes on "One Beat," not their earlier albums. Corin's snarl is as vicious as ever, and this is probably her best vocal performance of her career. The songs aren't as catchy as anything off of "All Hands" or "Dig Me Out", but they've got some great anthemic choruses. "No Anthems" and "Hey Darling" are real standouts, but it's a good follow-up to "The Woods." They don't attempt to imitate it, but they clearly love the hard-rock sound they embraced there and turned out an aggressive, loud, and good rock album.

Just an FYI, we have a Sleater-Kinney thread.

I was so afraid this band had died because I read something that basically said Ian considered the band a side project and was thinking about declaring it done, though maybe that was just some Wikipedia hoax. Easily one of my favorite bands right now, up there with Ringo Deathstarr and St Vincent.

I'm stoked for the new Sufjan Stevens album (has it really been five years since Age of Adz?), but I'm equally stoked for the new Mew album that's coming out in late April. If you haven't heard of them, they're a Danish band that describes their style as 'indie stadium,' and have been around for most of the last decade. Today they released their first single off their new album, titled "Satellites":
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LBCDPrdgmD0

I find it to be more upbeat than most of their songs, but I just can't stop listening to it. It seems to be a follow up to their previous album, No More Stories... rather than Frengers and And the Glass Handed Kites, which I find to be moodier overall (I would say that Frengers is my favorite album though). For similar song to the above see "Repeaterbeater":
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Jbh34d5r3HQ

Also from Frengers, you have "156," which is a a good example of the moodier sound pre-No More Stories...:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6aJ35d892L4

I would link to something from their other album, but as a suite album it's much better heard in one sitting, I think, and I can't really think of any standout songs on it. I also highly recommend "Comforting Sounds" and "Cartoons and Macreme Wounds" as well.

Her debut in 2012 is a treasure to me, this soul-searing collection of minimalism that just cuts through you. She's got this weird Sharon Van Etten-type effect on you where her music leaves you emotionally drained, but fascinated by it. If you haven't listened to the debut or heard her before, I'd recommend Honey and Waterfall as starters, both below:

I enjoy some of the tracks — the aforementioned "Calvary Captain" is catchy, even if we can't determine what it's derivative of :) and "Make You Better" has a great hook, and "Lake Song" reminds me of Nick Drake and seems as heartfelt as anything they've done, but others seem forgettable, at the moment. The sing-along at the end of "Anti-Summersong" is kind of silly.

I have no idea how many times I've listened to The Legend of Chavo Guerrero in the last few days, but my god is it catchy. I think this album spun out in part from the abandoned couplet JD had for The Sunset Tree: "you were an evil man much of the time, but on our best days, we were partners in crime." That last verse especially, goddamn.
