At least we're not the Thalmor (yet)
:siren::siren:TES VI OFFICIALLY TEASED AT E3 2018!:siren::siren:
oh god there's been no news since....

A lot of people have expressed interest in having a generalized TES thread, and the Morrowind thread was in agreement that a collapse of TES discussion into one thread may be a good idea. The Oblivion thread has fallen into archives, and the Skyrim thread isn't particularly active, so feel free to discuss any of the games in here.

The Elder Scrolls series of video games are made by Bethesda Softworks. They feature massive open worlds, quests, and dungeons. They also feature a leveling system unlike most other RPGs- instead of gaining experience points when you kill a monster or complete a quest, instead, in order to become better at hitting things, you go out and hit them. It's the hallmark of TES and the thing that sets it aside.

There's also the lore. TES has a richly detailed background, with Morrowind alone containing four novels worth of in-game literature, most of it irrelevant to the game itself. In addition, there are many questions in TES that don't have answers- even to the developers. As a forewarning, I'm going to state that not all lore can be considered true, and the vast majority is written- or to be considered written- in universe. If you haven't seen it with your character, it may not be true. A part of the magic is choosing what to believe or who to believe. Characters lie. Books are propaganda, racist, revisionist, or fiction. Everyone else has their own opinion, and all are valid.

Because we're not crazy, let's lead off with the info about the upcoming main title, which was teased at E3 2018.

The Elder Scrolls VI

Has finally been at least confirmed to be something that's going to come out in the future. I have no idea what it means but I will point out that it's the Dragonborn motif in the trailer, not the TES theme that's existed since Morrowind.

How to Obtain
Cryogenic freezing or a time machine.

The Elder Scrolls: Blades
A new mobile game, Blades was announced at E3 2018 to be a free release (with microtransactions) coming to, according to Todd Howard, "every platform (Bethesda) can put it on", from the phone in your pocket (and associated VR accessories), the console under your TV, to your PC and attached VR accessories. Featuring more simplistic controls inspired by Arena, the game features the player as a member of the eponymous Blades, the personal bodyguard and spy agency of the Septim Emperors. You return (incognito, since the Blades are now officially illegal) to your hometown to find it destroyed by a mysterious explosion, and a large part of the game is rebuilding your home town in the aptly named Town Mode, which is the main story. In addition, there is the Abyss, an endless mode of delving into an infinite dungeon to see how far you get, and a PvP Arena. Your town will not be in any definitive area of Tamriel, to allow you the headcanon of it being anywhere in Tamriel you want.

The game is out in Early Access right now, and Bethesda is currently rolling out access in waves to people who pre-registered. It's only for Android and iOS devices at this moment, but presumably will be rolled out across more systems as Bethesda deems fit. The PvP Arena is not enabled yet, but it will be there when the game reaches its full release. Given that the game is driven by microtransactions, presumably, it won't be mod friendly.

Microtransactions are the form of Gems, which let you get unique, legendary gear, speed up the timers that force you to wait to open the chests (loot boxes), build buildings faster, craft equipment faster, brew potions faster... look this all sounds terrible but it's early and Fallout Shelter was well received so let's wait for a popular consensus to form about how bad the microtransactions are.

Also literally the first thing you do in the game is kill a Thalmor, which is always nice!

How to Obtain
Google Play Store, or the App Store. If you can't see it, your device probably isn't supported. As mentioned, Bethesda is currently granting access in waves for Early Access.

And now let's go back in time to the previous entries.

The Elder Scrolls I: Arena
Arena was the first of the Elder Scrolls games, and the only one to feature a traditional XP based leveling system. Released in 1994, it is set in the early years of Uriel Septim VII's reign (canonically ending in 3E 399). Trusting too much to his Imperial Battlemage, Jagar Tharn, the Emperor is betrayed and cast into a realm of Oblivion. Using Illusion magic, the traitorous mage disguises himself as the Emperor and begins the time known as the Imperial Simulacrum, where his ill rule threatened to tear Tamriel to shreds. In the Imperial Dungeons, your story begins when you are contacted by the ghost of a dead mage who discovered Tharn's secret, and she helps you escape and sets you on the path of reassembling the Staff of Chaos, an artifact of great power that Tharn has dis-assembled and scattered across Tamriel.

Arena was originally conceptualized as you assembling a team of gladiators and traveling across the land fighting in arenas, questing for artifacts of power to improve your team, and eventually fighting in the Imperial City itself. That storyline was cut when the dev team decided that the questing was more fun than the gladiating and assembled the current main story. This game is most notable for including all of Tamriel. As in, all of it. The land outside cities is randomly generated and infinite, but every province can be visited, every city on its early maps can be wandered, and every race seen in their homeland.

How to Obtain
Available for free on elderscrolls.com (requires DOSBox to work), or with a pre-configured disk in the Anthology, with DOSBox pre-configured. Also, ordering ANY TES title on GOG.com gets you it for free.

The Elder Scrolls II: Daggerfall
Daggerfall pares down its scope from Arena's entirety of Tamriel to a set world centered around the Iliac Bay, a major body of water in between High Rock, land of the Bretons, and Hammerfell, land of the Redguards. The world is still vast, roughly equivalent to the size of Great Britain, but continuous- as in, unlike Arena, you can get from one city to another just by walking (attempting which is utter insanity because the world is huge). 6 years after the events of Arena, during a war between the Kingdom of Daggerfall and Kingdom of Sentinel, the King of Daggerfall, Lysandus, is mysteriously killed. Not content to be dead, the ghost of Lysandus begins haunting the city of Daggerfall (capital of the kingdom of Daggerfall, if you didn't figure that out). His friend, the Emperor, seeks to put his spirit to rest, as well as recover a certain... embarrassing letter that he sent to the Queen of Daggerfall that never arrived. He sends one of his most trusted agents and friends to fulfill this task- you.

Daggerfall was where the modern TES formula truly began in terms of leveling when your skills level. It was most well known for its massive game world, quest-breaking bugs, and randomly-generated, massive dungeons that required knowledge of 'chunks' that the RNG used to be able to truly navigate. It also had multiple endings, which required Bethesda to either choose a canon ending or unleash complete insanity. They chose insanity, resulting in the Warp in the West, where Akatosh, the Dragon-God of Time, Broke and wept on his couch as many mutually exclusive events happened. In the end they all happened, but as a compromise; Daggerfall, Wayrest, and Sentinel annexed most of their neighbors (and other Kingdoms annexed others in the chaos), Orsinium was legitimized as a nation, the region became more loyal to the Emperor, the Numidium was destroyed and the Underking put to rest, and Mannimarco split in two to become both the God of Worms and as the mortal High Priest, the King of Worms.

How to Obtain
Available for free on elderscrolls.com (requires DOSBox to work), or with a pre-configured disk in the Anthology, with DOSBox pre-configured. Easy download: at the UESP. Also, ordering ANY TES title at GOG.com gets you it for free.

An Elder Scrolls Legend: Battlespire
Battlespire was the first spin-off of the franchise. Set exclusively in the Realms of Oblivion, and during the Imperial Simulacrum of Jagar Tharn, you are sent to investigate why the Oblivion-based Imperial Battlemage College, the Battlespire, has fallen silent. The Daedric Prince of Destruction, Mehrunes Dagon, has seized the Battlespire in the hopes of using it as a base to invade Tamriel. Led only by clues left by someone ahead of you, you travel throughout several Realms to stop Dagon's plan of invasion.

The game has no open-world and is exclusively one long dungeon crawl. I've never played it myself, so I can't speak much about it, but I do know it was originally supposed to be an expansion to Daggerfall, which ended up becoming its own game.

How to Obtain
Available on GOG.

The Elder Scrolls Adventure: Redguard
Redguard was the second spin off and was released in 1998. Prior to TES: Online, it was the earliest game in the timeline, set during the closing years of the 2nd Era, during the rise of Tiber Septim (Talos). The High King of Hammerfell, Thassad II, dies of old age, but Hammerfell, bitterly divided, falls into a civil war between the Crowns, led by Thassad's successor, Crown Prince A'tor, and their bitter rivals, the Forebears. The Crowns are closing on victory, and in desperation, the Forebears invite the Emperor's forces in. Septim's armies crush the Crowns and conquer Hammerfelll, culminating in the great naval battle of Stros M'kai, an island off the southern coast of Hammerfell. The Prince is struck down by a poisoned arrow by Septim's Dunmer assassin, Dram, and finished off by his Dragon ally, Nafaalilargus. Admiral Amiel Richton puts down the last vestiges of resistance and secures Imperial rule over the isle. During this time, the player character, Cyrus, learns that his sister has gone missing and travels to Stros M'kai to investigate her disappearance, setting events into motion that would spread throughout all Hammerfell.

Redguard is notable for not being an RPG. It's instead an adventure game. I have never played this one myself either, but while I know it was well received, it didn't financially do well for Bethesda, almost bankrupting the company and forcing them to put all efforts forward on the next main-line Elder Scrolls game. Redguard, however, included with it a pamphlet known as the Pocket Guide to the Empire, which became THE defining factor for Tamriel for the rest of the series, setting in stone Morrowind and Skyrim, and angering TES fans everywhere when Oblivion ignores quite a bit of it. Most of this was later dismissed as being Imperial propaganda, though there are several annotations written by an Aldmeri who disagrees with it.

Available on GOG

The Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind
Morrowind is set 22 years after Daggerfall, on the far side of the continent in northeastern Tamriel. A prisoner is sent, under guard, without explanation, to Morrowind, ignorant of the role he was to play in that nation's history. By the will of the Emperor himself, even. Finding yourself in a land with no guidance other than to deliver a package to a man in Balmora, you're free largely to set your own path, becoming a mighty warrior, a cunning mage, or a stealthy rogue, or anywhere in between- or all three at once! You can join the Great Houses of Vvardenfell politics, join the Imperial Legions, preach the word of the native Tribunal, attempt to spread the word of the Imperial Gods (now Nine in number, Tiber Septim being considered a God), join three mainstay Guilds (Fighters, Mages, and Thieves), become an assassin for the Morag Tong, or just do whatever you felt like.

Morrowind was the first main-line game that completely forewent random generation in favor of a hand-crafted, set world with hand-written quests, marking it as the first of the modern three TES games. It was a HUGE financial success for Bethesda and saved the company, and was extremely well received, nearly always appearing on lists of the best RPGs of all time. Morrowind was the first TES game to feature additional content post-release, the first being Tribunal, where you travel to the capital city of Mournhold and get caught in a net of politics, religion, and religious politics. The second, Bloodmoon, has the player travel to the island of Solstheim north-west of Vvardenfell, a land of snow and Nords, helping establish a new Imperial mining colony and investigating an ancient prophecy.

Morrowind was also notable for the debut of The Elder Scrolls Construction Set, which opened up the wide world of user-made mods. See the second post for more details.

How to Obtain
Steam, or as part of the anthology, as part of a Steam key that also unlocks Oblivion GotY Deluxe and Skyrim Legendary (also disks that install normally). DRM-free now at GOG, which also gets you pre-configured copies of Arena and Daggerfall.

The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion
Oblivion is set 6 years after Morrowind and travels to the entirety of the Imperial Province of Cyrodiil, heartland of Tamriel and seat of power of the Empire. The game opens with you in prison, when the Emperor of Tamriel, Uriel Septim VII, turns up in your cell, which is conveniently a secret passage. Following the Emperor, you witness his assassination, the last act in a plot that opens Tamriel to an invasion from Oblivion by the armies of Mehrunes Dagon. Drawn into the Emperor's agents the Blades, it is your task to search for the lost heir so that Tamriel can be saved.

Oblivion is generally regarded as the weakest of the Modern Three, even though it does have its defenders and pluses. Most well known for its overhyped Radiant AI, potato faces, lack of voice actors, hilariously broken dynamic NPC conversation system, and completely broken level scaling system. As mentioned earlier, the jungles Cyrodiil was described in the lore were set aside for temperate forests. Oblivion also was one of the debut games of downloadable content, most infamously Horse Armor, and several houses with different themes. The two DLCs of note are Knights of the Nine, a questline in which the player re-establishes an order of ancient knights to fight a returned evil, and Shivering Isles, a full-blown expansion pack set in the Daedric Realm of Sheogorath, Prince of Madness, which is widely regarded as being much, much better than mainline Oblivion and well worth purchasing the original game for.

How to Obtain
Steam, or as part of the Anthology. The disks inside contain only Knights of the Nine and Shivering Isles, but the included Steam key activates Oblivion Deluxe on Steam, which includes all the minor DLCs, as well as GotY copies of Morrowind and Skyrim Legendary. Since Bethesda's old digital DLC purchasing system went down the Steam Deluxe edition is the only way to obtain the minor DLCs apart from finding a disk Knights of the Nine, apart from Battlehorn Castle which was released after the disk was published.

The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim
Skyrim is set in the titular province north of Cyrodiil and is 200 years past the events of Oblivion. The Empire, weakened by the fall of the Septims, has slowly crumbled and is now threatened by the Third Aldmeri Dominion, a nation consisting of the former provinces of Summerset Isle, Valenwood, with client states in Elsweyr. In the aftermath of a massive Great War fought between the two superpowers in Hammerfell and Cyrodiil, ending with Hammerfell's independence after they refuse to accept the Empire's ceding southern Hamemrfell, a civil war breaks out in Skyrim, led by Jarl Ulfric Stormcloak of Windhelm, who murders/kills in an honorable duel the High King of Skyrim as an Imperial puppet, a civil war between the Stormcloaks and Empire breaks out. After you're captured by Imperial forces who were ambushing the rebel forces, you are (in a twist on the traditional TES prisoner opening) being taken to the chopping block. However, the return of the dragons throws a wrench in the issues, ending in your escape. Revealed as the Dragonborn, your destiny is tied to the return of the dragons and the fate of Tamriel may rest in your hands- and Voice.

Skyrim is the most recent of the main-line TES games, and is generally considered a significant improvement on Oblivion. Featuring the series' first crafting mechanics, the appearance of Perks in skills, and the removal of any class system, Skyrim features a more unique world than Oblivion's generic Europe-land. Skyrim has three pieces of additional content- Dawnguard, a storyline involving a battle between vampires and vampire hunters, the player takes sides in the fight, even if the differenes in the story are mostly in details rather than actual quests. Second came Hearthfire, a more simple DLC allowing the player to build his own house in the wilderness, adopt children, and other, small additions. Last, but not least, came Dragonborn, which features a storyline detailing with the return of Miraak, the first Dragonborn, and set on the Isle of Solstheim, which since the events of Bloodmoon has become a sanctuary for some of the Dark Elves of Morrowind after the Red Year subsequently damaged their civilization, shortly followed up by an invasion of Argonians that was eventually turned back (despite what the Novels would want you to believe) by House Redoran.

How to Obtain
Steam, virtually any site that sells game keys, and in the Anthology in its Legendary incarnation, which includes all three pieces of DLC.

The Elder Scrolls Online
As long winded as I am when it comes to TES, there is a dedicated discission thread in the MMO HMO here.

General backstory, Online is set 1,000 years before Skyrim, in the middle of the Second Era during the Interregnum between the fall of the Reman and Akaviri Potentates' Cyrodiilic Empire and the rise of Tiber Septim's Empire. The fall of the Empire has resulted in a basic orgy of violence to descend across Tamriel, with tons of warlords trying to fight to reforge the Empire and establish their dominance over Tamriel. In the middle of this, three great political alliances form as the Provinces and races realize 'poo poo, we've gotta do something or someone else is gonna win'. The diplomacy of Emeric of Wayrest forges the Bretons of High Rock, the Redguards of Hammerfell, and the Orcs of Orsinium-between-Sackings-by-Bretons-and-Redguards into a great faction known as the Daggerfall Covenant. To the south, the Aldmeri Dominion (first edition) forms out of a political alliance led by Queen Aryenn, uniting the Summerset Isles, Valenwood, and Elsweyr. On the far side, the Nords and Argonians help the Dunmer (their mortal enemies) repel an invasion from the Japan-like people of Akavir, and when the other two alliances form the three agree that maybe they need to stop fighting one another and give an alliance a chance so that the other races don't win, and thus form the Ebonheart Pact. Cyrodiil is left out in the cold because it's a reeeaaalll hosed up place that everyone wants to conquer and crown their own Emperor, and all three Alliances turn it into the primary battleground of their poltical ambitions. In the middle of this, an invasion from Oblivion begins and it's your job to find the lost heir- wait, scratch that, no, they actually did a better Oblivion invasion storyline than Oblivion. Your soul has been stolen and as a result you have special powers that mean you're the only one who can really stop Molag Bal's Planemeld, where he seeks to bring Nirn into Coldharbour and conquer it. Also, you've got to get your soul back.

There has been a number of DLC content released for ESO that adds significantly to the rather nicely sized existing game world. Smattered throughout this is also a good chunk of Dungeon DLCs, which just add new group content to the game.
Orsinium was the first DLC pack and features travelling to the titular Land Of The Orcs When The Bretons And Redguards Haven't Burnt It Down Again.
Imperial City is a PvP focused pack but contains a story detailing one more attempt of Molag Bal to actually fulfill the Planemeld.
Thieves Guild and Dark Brotherhood add the respective guilds to the game, in new areas (Hew's Bane (the boot) in Hammerfell for TG, Anvil and Kvatch and their environs for DB), with new stories.
Morrowind, the first Chapter, takes you, the player in the computer chair eating cheetos, back to Vvardenfell, except 800 years before we visited for the first time in the future. It is the first part of a new storyline detailing another Daedric plot, and involves helping Vivec figure out why his powers are diminishing, cause Dagoth Ur doesn't show up again for another few hundred years and he has access to the Heart of Lorkhan freely.
Clockwork City is a DLC that continues the arc started in Morrowind, and involves traveling to the titular Clockwork City of Sotha Sil, the one Tribune you actually didn't get to meet (alive, at least) in TES 3 Morrowind, and the last one to appear in ESO, and helping solve the ongoing Daedric threats.
Summerset, the second Chapter, is the final part of the arc started in Morrowind, and has you travel to the homeland of the High Elves, where you can adventure and explore as per usual, but also adds the isle of Artaeum, home of the Psijic Order, and lets you join them (warning: this questline is pretty disappointing).
Murkmire is a standalone DLC that takes you to the southeasternmost point in Tamriel in Black Marsh (Argonia), and greatly features new lore on the Argonians, and confirmation of a few other things.
Elsweyr and the minor DLC Dragonhold form the primary nexus of the storyline termed by ZOS as the "Season of the Dragon", along with the game's yearly two Dungeon DLCs. Detailing with the shenanigans that result in an outbreak of dragons into the Khajiiti homeland (which you can participate in in the prologue quest), help put things back right and defeat whatever sinister plot the dragons have planned. Each zone has its own independent storyline but once both are completed it unlocks an additional few quests that combines characters from both stories and gives the final conclusion to the dragon storyline.
Greymoor and the Q4 DLC that is as-yet unannounced (but we know full well it's Markarth and the Reach) form the yearly storyline for 2020, called the "Dark Heart of Skyrim". An alliance of Reach witches, vampires, and werewolves are threatening Tamriel, and your travels take you to Western Skyrim to once again do what you do best... be told "hey, you. You're finally awake." And no, I'm not joking.

The Elder Scrolls Travels
Four games that exist, and I know little about them. They're small games developed for cell phones when cell phones had the primary purpose of making calls, not being pocket mobile computers. Stormhold is in Black Marsh, escape from prison. Dawnstar is in Skyrim and requires you to fend off an invasion of the town. Shadowkey is set in Hammerfell, and is the only game that receives even a slight mention in the main series- an off hand reference in Dragonborn. Oblivion, Travel Edition, is a version of Oblivion, the full version's, main story, pared down into a mobile game.

How to Obtain
Uhhh....

The Elder Scrolls Legends
Legends is a free-to-play (but microtransaction enabled) strategy card game in the style of digital card games like Hearthstone, in the lineage of Magic: The Gathering and other such card games you played with all your neckbeard friends in middle school. Most of the game is built around its multiplayer against other players, but there are a few story modes. All of them (that I know of, at least) are set in the 4th Era. The vanilla story that serves as the tutorial is set during the Great War between the Empire and Thalmor's Aldmeri Dominion. The rest are all pay-to-play, and are Fall of the Dark Brotherhood, detailing how the DB got into the shape it was at the start of Skyrim, Return To Clockwork City, a jaunt into the CWC as it was in ESO, except well after the death of its creator, and Isles of Madness, set in everyone's favorite realm of complete batshit insanity, the Shivering Isles.

How to Obtain
Steam, Google Play, Apple Store, whatever.

The Elder Scrolls Novels
The Infernal City and Lord of Souls
Between Oblivion and Skyrim two full-length novels came out, which were really one novel cut in two at a cliffhanger. It features a story dealing largely with the end-results of the events of Morrowind in the world after Oblivion. The Empire struggled badly and has lost control of the Summerset Isles and Valenwood to the Aldmeri Dominion, Black Marsh to the Argonians, and Morrowind to... well, everything. After the Nerevarine destroyed the Heart of Lorkhan, it caused Vivec the god to lose his powers, and as a result the Ministry of Truth in Vivec City un-froze itself in time and immediately smashed into the ground, leveling the city instantly and causing an eruption of Red Mountain which destroyed huge parts of Morrowind. Afterwards, the Argonians decided that 'hey, you know that whole slavery thing, we never paid you Dunmer assholes back for that' and immediately invaded and conquered the whole province, an event that Bethesda immediately retconned out during Skyrim, most specifically Dragonborn, to House Redoran leading a force of their own and pushing the Argonians at least farther south than Mournhold.

Honestly, I'm not going to spoil the stories in case someone actually wants to read them (they're good as far as video game books go). Their key value to the Elder Scrolls lore nut was their visions into Tamriel AFTER Oblivion- an Empire ruled by the Mede dynasty, rivaled by the Thalmor's Aldmeri Dominion, and Morrowind blown to gently caress damaged but STILL EXISTS. They touch on a lot of elements of lore like Khajiit birth by moon cycles, Towers, and a number of other concepts like Argonian beliefs, language, and culture.

Morrowind FAQs and Common problems

Morrowind for Skyrim/Oblivion Players
At its core, Morrowind is an RPG. Your character is very dependent on its stats and what you pick during character generation can completely determine everything that happens afterwards for quite a while. While Oblivion and Skyrim gave you a 100% success rate for everything with only the magnitude affected by skill, all events in Morrowind can fail, as determined by a combination of a random number generator and your skills, with a chance to fail even at 99%. You will need to grind, train, and balance your character a lot more than the other games before you become a whirlwind of destruction.

Remember that despite many attempts to bring it up to date, this is still a game from 2002, before Radiant AI, shaders, voice acting in dialogue, and many other things which make Oblivion and Skyrim what they are.

  • Magic does not regenerate constantly. Your character will need to rest or drink a potion for it to come back. Several of the birthsigns at CharGen give magicka multipliers, which you will want to use if playing a purely or mostly magic character.
  • Combat is much more of a clickfest than later games. Weapons have a chance to hit or miss and spells can be cast or fail based on your skills. Early on, you may even die once or twice just because the RNG said so. Again, it will take some time before you become a whirlwind of death. Sadly, there are no mods which can fix this.
  • While characters in Skyrim are much more fluid and can do practically anything at low skill levels, characters in Morrowind tend to stick to skills based on the bonuses they gain at CharGen, until they gain enough money to train everything to 100 (which will eventually happen).
  • Starting with Oblivion, Bethesda liked to populate their games with as much stuff as possible, even out in the wilderness. Vvardenfell is much more desolate and uninhabited, with long travel distances between civilization and quest goals.
  • Speaking of travel distances, there is no fast travel via map. While many other fast travel options do exist, each one of them goes to only a few limited locations and you may still need to travel quite a distance afterwards to get to where you need to go. Here is a complete guide to fast travel on Vvardenfell
  • There is no magical compass. You'll have to find your quest objectives on your own and NPC directions are often pretty vague. The UESP made a map of absolutely everything in Morrowind, which you can use if you get lost.
  • Going out into the wilderness is just as perilous as the other games. If you find a mod to deal with Cliff Racers (there's quite a few if you look), outdoor travel will get a lot less difficult. Dungeons are a bit of a gamble, as there can be anything from a few rats to atronachs inside.
  • NPCs do a lot less in Morrowind, almost nothing really. All they do is travel on a pre-arranged grid of nodes within the cell they're placed in. Dialogue is not voiced and is instead given through dialogue boxes, which give a lot more information more quickly. NPCs never go to bed or lock their doors, so if you want to go shopping at 4 in the morning, no problem.
  • There is no such thing as trespassing. There are only hostile NPCs. If they strike first (or if no one else sees you), there's no bounty.
  • There's no physics system. Once objects are placed in the world, they stay in place, even if you remove the object under them. NPCs won't pick things up either.
  • Component pieces of armor can be equipped and unequipped individually. As you find loot, you could end up with a bonemold cuirass, a glass left pauldron, a chitin right pauldron, Netch Leather Boots, Daedric greaves, and ebony gauntlets. Clothing and armor can be worn at the same time.

Here is a more complete list of all the differences between the games.

Where is AllConnary Textures?
The maker of AllConnary Textures got involved in some internet drama a while back and took all the links down while urging everyone else to do the same. Lucky for you, we still have a working link:

Who is the mysterious person in black armor that keeps attacking when I rest?
That is a Dark Brotherhood assassin, part of the Tribunal expansion. If you are fine dealing with them, their armor is worth quite a lot. If not, there's a mod to remove them until later.

My computer is a ten-year-old netbook that barely gets 1FPS when I run MGE. Do you have any cool downloads for me too?
The Morrowind FPS Optimizer would help you significantly. You can use it to adjust Morrowind's settings outside of what you're normally able to do and, like the title suggests, make Morrowind run better.

The sun turns black whenever you look at it.
ATI cards can have trouble rendering the sun correctly. There’s a fix here.

Everything looks all white/all black/all gray aka "I start the game and all I see is a black screen"
There are quite a few causes of this. Here are the most common ones:
  • Skipping the opening cutscene when you start a new game. There's no fix other than watching it all the way through. Don't worry, it's not that long.
  • Forgetting to disable the Steam overlay. It's in the Steam properties menu.
  • Not setting something to administrator mode. Double check that both MGE and your Morrowind executable are set this way.
  • Heavy shader/LOD use. Try waiting a few minutes and see if things start showing up. If not, try disabling shaders and distant land in MGE.
  • A rogue mod or shader. Try checking mgeXE.log or Warnings.txt to see if something went wrong there.

MGE crashes on startup
Two files generated by MGE, dinput8.dll and d3d8.dll, sometimes get corrupted. Try deleting them and then running Morrowind once to regenerate them. If that doesn't work, you may have to reinstall it.

Can't open the console/take screenshots.
MGE and MGE-XE both disable the default method for doing these. You will need to set specific keys for these functions using the macro editor (under the "input" tab for MGE or "in-game" tab in MGE-XE).

Error message saying Failed to load snowflake: meshes\bm_snow_01.nif".
First, double check that you didn't install Morowind into "Program Files" and its set to "Run as Administrator" and NOT "read only." Then, check your Morrowind.ini file to make sure that the following lines of code are present:

Archive 0=Bloodmoon.bsa
Archive 1=Flora Glow.bsa
Archive 2=Tribunal.bsa

If that doesn't work, reinstall Tribunal and Bloodmoon (some recommend disconnecting from the internet and disabling any anti-virus software while doing this). CD users may also want to directly copy the "Data Files" folder (or the .nif file) from the Bloodmoon CD into the folder on their computer.

There are two solutions for this. The first is to enable the relevant bugfixes in the Morrowind Code Patch (which are applied automatically). If that doesn't work, try changing the sound from hardware accelerated to software accelerated in the in-game options menu.

Bethesda's sad relationship with alt-tabbing
Just like Skyrim, Morrowind doesn't work very well with Alt+Tab. In order to minimize the game this way, you'll need to have another window/program open in the background which Windows can alt-tab to. There's a chance that the game will crash if you do it, though.

Ways to increase FPS:
There are a few tips to increasing FPS, however some systems go slowly (15-25fps) no matter what fixes are attempted, due to the engine's odd way of handling hardware.

One thing to do in order to determine what's causing your biggest framerate hits is to bind MGE-XE's toggle functions (i.e. LOD, AA, HW shader) to different keys in the macro editor (under "In Game"), toggle them on or off, and watch what your framerate does. LOD is (obviously) the biggest, but AI functions will probably be your biggest ones in town, since the engine has to process a lot of different things with a (relatively) large number of NPCs. Make sure you have both "Display Messages" and "Show FPS" enabled in MGE-XE or you won't be able to measure it.

Version 2.0 and up of the MSGO sets several options in MGE-XE much higher than they need to be and lowering them can solve several problems. The steps below outline some of the things you can change:
1. Update MGE-XE using either the latest stable version or beta
2. Under Graphics, set Antialiasing to 8x. Under Shader Setup, double click any of the shaders under Active Shaders to disable them (and don't forget to save). Alternatively, you can uncheck Enable Shaders to turn all of them off.
3. Under Distant Land, set the draw distance to 12 cells or less. I've checked and you really can't see further than that during normal gameplay. You can also disable some of the reflections.

In addition, here are a couple compatability tips:

Known but unsolved problems:
Sometimes the game stops for a couple minutes, especially on startup or moving from an indoor cell to an outdoor one. If the game seems dead when loading something, wait a couple minutes first to be sure it actually is.

Heavily modded versions have also been known to crash at regular intervals in-game, with some being unable to play for longer than 30 minutes. Reinstalling might help solve this, or it might not. As mods and software improve, this problem may go away in the future, but for now there's no known fix.

In addition, Morrowind often crashes on exit as well. This seems to be caused by MGE, but is relatively harmless.

If you know you did everything correctly and STILL have a problem:
There are many people here in the thread more than willing to assist you in getting everything working. If you do post a problem here in the thread, make sure you give us more information than "X is crashing" so we have a good idea of what's wrong and how to fix it. The suggested things to include are: OS, hardware (Processor & Video Card), Morrowind version (either Steam or CD), a screenshot of the problem or quote of the error message, a description of when the problem occurs, and what you've tried so far to fix it. Many of the programs listed in the OP have multiple forum threads and websites elsewhere online, you may want to try searching for your problem before asking it here as the developer might have a solution for it. Also, do be aware that some error messages can generate other ones, so if you get more than one error message make sure you post it.

If everything works correctly and you make it through character generation but don't know where to start:
-Talk to the wood elf you see to your left as soon as you exit. Then, go to Arille's Tradehouse and talk to the Nord at the top of the stairs.
-If you have a character with combat skills, head out of Seyda Neen to the right and go to the bandit cave in the hill.
-Follow your orders and go to Balmora. Caius lives in the house at the far northwest corner.
-If you're still stuck, http://www.uesp.net/wiki/Morrowind:Starting_Out

Big list of Megapacks, Mods and Extras
Modpacks and Overhauls:
The Morrowind Graphics and Sound Overhaul (MGSO)
The MSGO is a collection of hundreds of different graphics mods compiled by Kingpix and updates nearly everything having to do with graphics: models, textures, shaders, the UI, and more. It includes most of the well-known mods, such as Better Bodies, Better Clothes, Vurt's Trees, Animated Morrowind, and many more you never knew you wanted. A convenient control panel allows you to control which mods you want visible and which ones you don't, so if you don't like a particular mod or the game runs slowly, MGSO allows you to fix it. As of version 2.0, Kingpix added an automatic installer, so you can now just sit back and watch as hundreds of meshes and .esp files install themselves.

Options panel fix: http://ornitocopter.net/Release/MGSOOptions_fixed.rar
Unofficial Patch (v5): http://download.fliggerty.com/download--726

Morroblivion
Morroblivion is a long awaited overhaul which allows you to play Morrowind with Oblivion's shader technology and gameplay mechanics (like fast travel!) by taking Morrowind and putting it into Oblivion as a mod. Some prefer this method, others prefer the overhaul pack, but most agree that the end results between the two are roughly the same graphics-wise. SheepNameKiller did a write-up of it over in the Oblivion thread. Note: You will need to own both Morrowind and Oblivion in order to use Morroblivion.

The Chocolate Pack

Hadlock's Mod Compilation
A .zip file of many mods from the original list in the OP.

Goon-Made Mods:
Uvirith's Legacy - by Stuporstar and others: A must-have mod for House Telvanni which greatly improves the Stronghold to include more rooms, NPC's, a new travel system, quests, and more.
The Tea Mod - by Stuporstar: Why worry about all that prophecy stuff when you can sit down with a nice cuppa? This mod adds over 30 teas and 6 coffees to the game, plus tons of tea-related content.
Get Fezzed - by Stuporstar: Spread the joys of fez wearing to all inhabitants of Morrowind! Includes Shrinkwand, a wand which makes things smaller, teensy, wee, or even "frappe."
Books of Vvardenfell - by Stuporstar: Adds 50 lore-friendly guides and other books to the game written mostly by actual NPCs.
Propylons - by Stuporstar and others: Modifies the Master Index official plugin so you can teleport to Caldera from anywhere
Better Heads (Pluginless) - by The Furious Pirate: A version of Better Heads which doesn't require a plugin to work. You just unpack the files to your Morrowind directory and you're good to go.
Vvardenfell Visages- by The Furious Pirate and others: A face and hair replacement mod which updates the original models and textures while staying true to the originals.
Hall of Heroes (Expanded) - by Naky: An old (first) house mod. Naky welcomes any improvements to it.
Spell Renamer - by Inverness: Adds the school and relative cost of each spell to the beginning of its name, allowing for easier sorting. Add the .py file to the Mopy folder to install, then double-click it to run.
Museum House - by Musical_Daredevil: A small house in Balmora meant for showing off all your loot. It features changeable display racks and pedestals for different sizes of items.
SoT's Order of Ascadia - by Sky Shadowing: A business mod in which you can build your own guild, recruit members, and expand to other cities on Vvardenfell.

Recommended Mods:
Note: DO NOT use Morrowind enhanced. It's incredibly buggy and can cause in-game crashes.

Additional Content:
Tamriel Rebuilt: A highly recommended mod consisting of an attempt to recreate the mainland province of Morrowind according to Elder Scrolls lore. Currently contains two completed maps, with much more content to come.
Tamriel Rebuilt Groundcover: Adds grass to the Tamriel Rebuilt landmass (if enabled).
Morrowind Comes Alive: A somewhat [in]famous megapack which places over a thousand unique NPCs around the world.
Morrowind Rebirth: Another megapack which adds more NPCs, towns, armor, and other things with the goal of making Morrowind seem less empty.
Starfire's NPC Additions: Randomly generates NPCs in settlements and the wilderness in order to add more people to the game.
Passive Healthy Wildlife: Makes non-diseased creatures more passive so they won't attack unless provoked.
The Farmer Mod Start your own farming business by purchasing fields and farmhands to grow your small plot of land into a large plantation.
Morrowind Abodes: A collection of six house mods, each mod placing a house in a different city (including Ald-Ruhn, Balmora, and Vivec).

Graphic Enhancements:
AllConnaryTextures - One of the most well-known and recommended texture replacement packs.
Better Dialogue Font - A higher-res version of Morrowind's font.
AOF's Waterfalls and AOF's Potions: Changes the textures for waterfalls and potions to much better ones.
Taddeus' "On the Rocks!" series: Replaces the meshes and textures of every rock and boulder in the game. Includes bump maps and AO.
Better Bodies, Better Bodies (for beasts), Better Heads, Better Clothes and More Better Clothes - "Better" models for heads, bodies, and clothing to match.
Darknut's weapon textures and armor textures - Note: These link to the 1024 versions. There are also 512 versions available at Great House Fliggerty.
Darknut's creature textures for Morrowind, Tribunal, and Bloodmoon
Distant Lights: Modifies MGEXE so it renders lights in the distance (Note: Requires MGEXE, obviously)
SWG's Skies - A number of different Hi-Res skies
Vurt's Hi-res skies (Note: this is an addon for SWG's skies, not a standalone mod)
Better Books
Moonstar Crosshair

Gameplay Enhancements:
BTB's Game Improvements: A combination of several mods which change and rebalance many different game systems including birthsigns, races, alchemy, and spell effects. It makes the game much harder to break and provides a bit more of a challenge than vanilla Morrowind.
SUPER Adventurers 3: Rebalances leveling mechanics (i.e. skill gains and monsters) and adds a while bunch of additional content, including NPCs, weapons, armor, and clothing.
Run Faster: Does exactly what it says on the tin. Choose the file with the speed you want and enjoy the fact that it no longer takes you hours to go from one end of town to the other. It also modifies NPCs' speeds, which some people don't like.
Galsiah's Character Development (w/ fixes): Changes the leveling system so your attributes go up as your skills do, rather than choosing at level-up.
MADD Leveler: Does mostly the same thing as GCD with a few differences that some people prefer.
Linora's Leveling Mod: If you're like me and don't feel like messing around much with leveling, this mod is for you. All it does is give you x5 multipliers on level-up for any major or minor skill you raised by at least one point.
Multiple Teleport Marking Mod: Allows you to mark up to 12 different places and recall to any one of them via a pop-up menu.
Melian's Teleport Mod: Allows for an unlimited number of mark locations.
Fair Magicka Regen and Natural Healing: Regenerates magicka and health, based on several variables.
Speed and Stamina: Changes how stamina works and when it's drained, plus raises some movement-based things a bit.
Book Rotate: Rotates a book at a different angle each time it's dropped, allowing you to finally place them on bookshelves properly.

Quests:
Great House Dagoth: Adds the Sixth House as a playable house with both quests and ranks.
Rise of House Telvanni: Help House Telvanni rise to political dominance and forever alter Morrowind's political landscape.
Twin Lamps: Ever wanted to do more with the abolition movement than just free a few Khajiits? This mod adds 15-20 new quests with branching paths and the possibility of ending slavery on Vvardenfel.

Mod managers:
Wrye Mash: The most widely used manager. It does practically everything, from sorting load orders to checking dependencies to even allowing you to change file dates.
MLOX and TES3Cmd: Highly recommended, MLOX allows you to sort your load order and check for conflicts between mods. TES3Cmd allows you to fix problems you find and clean mods via command line.
TESTool: A conflict checker which comes with a handy "just fix it" button if you want a less complicated (but less thorough) fix.
TESPCD: A more manual version of TESTool.
Nexus Mod Manager: Released by the Nexus sites, it allows you to sort, reorder, and check for updates to mods for Morrowind and any other Nexus games (including Skyrim and Fallout).

Note: Make sure to install Mash in your Morrowind Directory, or else it won't find anything even with the correct file paths.

BTB's Morrowind Mod List: BTB created a website with a list of suggested mods and graphics replacers with full descriptions, instructions, links, and screenshots of each one.
Knotstheinane's Mod List: This blog also has a complete guide to getting Morrowind running, as well as numerous links to different mods.

An important note about save files
In the past, some players experienced problems with corrupted saves when using Quicksave or saving outdoors with older versions of MGE. While this has been shown to not be a problem for some time, you should at least be aware that it can possibly happen.

I am not an egghead. I am well-read.
Reading about the Daggerfall for Unity toolkit that's being worked on made me feel like reinstalling the game and messing around again, until I remembered that it's kind of a pain to get the keyboard/mouse controls to something close to modern standards. I still love Daggerfall though; it's janky and long, but has a bunch of neat things to do.

I never actually finished the game; on my character that got the furthest, I got to the last dungeon and was completely stymied by the need to have levitation magic.

You can switch to somewhat modern controls by editing z.cfg in the game directory with a text editor like Notepad++ and under controls where it says betaplyr.dat, change it to viewplyr.dat. You'll still need to tweak it ingame but it gives you basic WSAD movement and CTRL to crouch and stuff. It's Arena that's a pain in the rear end because as far as I know you can't configure the controls without remapping everything in DOSBox.

Battlespire wasn't that terrible actually. The character creation was pretty solid, and there was a decent amount of random deadra lore scattered around. Also you get to be Divayth Fyr, which is great.

Are you sure that's not just an easter egg to Battlespire that certain artifacts from that game appear in Tel Fyr? I mean, you're meant to be a new young recruit in Battlespire, not a powerful millenia year old wizard. I suppose it wouldn't the the first thing Bethesda's retconned though.

I always wonder about that. Divayth has the key to a pocket dimension with the Daedric Crescent inside, which is specifically a weapon from Battlespire. But Divayth also says that he's 4000 years old, which would make him super old even in Battlespire, certainly not a young recruit. And it's hard to imagine Divayth working his way up the Telvanni hierarchy, building a tower, and doing all his corprus research in just a few decades after Battlespire.

Skywind puts me at odds with myself. On one hand, it's the most ridiculously ambitious thing ever, but on the other, it's kinda been done before with Morroblivion and the YouTube channel has been consistently active with observable progress. Best of luck to them.

The larger Tamriel Renewal Project is too much though. Bethesda might get their poo poo together and put out another game by the time that happens.

I'm a couple of hours into Skyrim, my first time ever playing an Elder Scrolls game, and I'm pretty surprised by how crummy the NPC dialog is. The voice acting varies from so-so to terrible, and people seem to completely stop talking at random times. It yanks me out of the gigantic immersive not-quite-Game-of-Thrones world they've obviously worked super hard to create. I nearly gave up a few times in the first hour or so, but now that the boilerplate RPG stuff is out of the way and my adventure has begun, I can see why everyone speaks so highly of it.

A friend of mine once ordered "This is Football 2002" for the Playstation and received Morrowind in the mail by accident. I asked him to sell it to me and he could use the profits to buy TIF2002 again and still have £15 left over and he basically told me to gently caress off.

Years later I finally got round to playing Morrowind and my only memory of it is running for miles to find some Rubicks Cube in a Dwarven temple and being hounded by pterodactyls the entire way there and back.

I should really give that series another shot.

Also Morrowind has sold more copies than Oblivion, so I bet the average gamer started with that one anyhow.
