Nice, I saw Regis the last time he was at Oktave. Jeff is bringing in some great names.

If anyone likes the dark/idm-ish side of techno, I had a mix on the Brood Audio podcast recently:

Yeah just give Svreca's mixes a listen and that will point you in the right direction. His label, Semantica, is also a good place to look (along with like, Stroboscopic Artefacts, Prologue, and Time 2 Express (though Prologue/T2X can be v hit / miss)

Hi thread,

I'm a complete novice when it comes to techno, but I'm looking for more stuff in the vein of L.F.O., Gescom, Balil and Lego Feet. Sorry if not all of that is actually techno, but if you could point me in the direction of some similar sounding stuff, that would be great. Also if anyone has the knowledge to update the OP with a bit of a guide to some old and new essential techno songs/EPs/albums/mixes, it would be much appreciated.

Thanks!

I guess I'll keep digging round the early Warp stuff as I'm sure there's plenty I haven't explored.

If you've got any more recent recs, send them my way. It doesn't have to sound like the stuff I mentioned. I'm basically looking for some sort of primer into techno. What releases have received pretty wide acclaim over the last couple of years?

For that early Warp Bleep stuff there's the comps they put out for their 10th anniversary. Warp 10+1 while having classic House and Techno on the first disc, the second had a whole bunch of Bleep anthems at the time. The second volume Warp 10+2 had all those really classic Warp tunes on it, your LFO, NoW, Sweet Exorcist etc.

For the better primer on that early Warp/Bleep sound try the first part in the guide I wrote up for the UK Bass thread.

Also if you like Balil remember that was an alias of The Black Dog, or an alias of one of the original members of the original TBD. Soma Records put out a 2xCD comp of all their early stuff called the Book of Dogma which might be what you're after. Totally ahead of it's time when you consider some of it came out in 1989/90. Soma also reissued their first kinda album called Temple of Transparent Balls too which is worth it. There's also Bytes, which was a record Warp put out of The Black Dog and their alias stuff in '93, as part of that whole Artificial Intelligence series they did. All on that list is probably worth checking too.

None of that's exactly new but hey, give it a whirl I guess. Can't really think of anyone doing that sound nowadays bar the odd wee throwback soundalike now and then. Though The Black Dog did put out an EP the other year where they gave it a tribute. I suppose some of the Deep Tech stuff looks back on some of that bleep sound, but that's a different ballgame really.

I'll just list a few that I'm into although I like the modern darker and more experimental/IDM sounding stuff.

Labels: Stroboscopic Artefacts, CLR, Brood Audio, Perc Trax
Artists: Tommy Four Seven, Dadub, Dronelock, VSK, Drumcell, Scalameriya, Xhin, Dubit

on the softer side the Voices from the Lake album was pretty popular a year or two ago. The Recondite album too I believe.

I'd also start listening to podcasts: CLR (overall my favorite label and the reason I like techno), Drumcode, Dave Clark's White Noise, Louche, Naked Lunch just to name a few but it feels like a bottomless pit of stuff to listen to sometimes. These have new episodes pretty much on a weekly basis too.

e: When I'm totally bored, I like to punch in Berghain on soundcloud and just listen to whatever comes up, or pick a random set on Paxahau's... aaaand on that note, the Movement phase 1 lineup is out next Tuesday :radcat:

Figured it may be better to ask in this thread. I am going to London for work for 2 months from March, so I want to go to some clubs/events with decent music while there. Any suggestions?

Something along these lines:
-Umek
-Adam Beyer
-303Lovers
-Tocadisco
-Uto Karem
-Olivier Giacomotto
-Sonny Wharton
-Stefano Noferini
-David Penn
-Christian Smith
-Nicole Moudaber
-Sharam

So yeah, mostly techno/tech house. Definitely no EDM, dubstep, psychedelic. Mostly just concerned about music rather than pulling or getting high.

Last time I was in London I went to Fabric, cause I heard I'd get mugged/stabbed at Ministry of Sound, and I left kinda disappointed. Awesome venue but unfortunately the genre of music did not blow me away. Probably just that particular night...
I will obviously be watching RA and such, but just curious if anyone in this thread has any specific suggestions. Ibiza was on the table but apparently it's basically useless to go in March/April. Looks like there is also some Awakenings event in Amsterdam in April, Time Warp, then as well as something I've never heard of called "Snowbombing," any thoughts? Or any other suggestions, provided it's easy enough to get to for a weekend (given I'll be working Mon-Fri).

So Movement's 2015 first lineup is out and well it's looking very tempting to go already. How has it been for you goons who have gone before?

BWV
Feb 24, 2005

In short: Go to Movement. It is the best.

Long: I went the last two years. It's so worth it. If you book things in advance most things are cheap (compared to other festivals) and Detroit is super fun during that week. It is enclosed at Hart Plaza but getting in and out is pretty easy so it's not like you're stuck there and you can basically bring in whatever you want (the security is asleep and just checking for weapons)

Movement does so many things well. They book "big room" acts during peak times in such a way that it evens out the crowds so you're not feeling too packed anywhere. Also, the atmosphere is so good that most DJs head into the crowd for the more interesting sets. I remember saying hi to Function, Move D, Azari and III, and a bunch of other folk during the Mike Huckaby set. They have a "Made in Detroit" stage which has amazing sound and just features local folk. You'll end up spending a lot of time there. The after parties are amazing too. Usually costing 15-30$ they go from 12 till 6 am. Last year I saw Dettman play b2b with Function as opening act for Chris Liebling. Also you find smaller parties that have pretty cool artists like last year there was one with Erika, BMG, Mike Servito and Orphx. The sheer amount of talented artists there means you'll accidentally end up at some of the best sets you've ever attended.

If I wasn't going to be in Berlin for school stuff I would be going again this year. Definitely worth it.

WHAT YOU SAY
I'll summarize this but feel free to ask questions.

Just a couple things about Detroit itself, first of all get a number of a cab. Ask friends, the company, whatever. People will try and hustle you and depending on where you are and where you want to go finding a taxi can be difficult. Don't get stuck in the middle of a city you don't know at 4 AM. This isn't NYC, you can't take the L from Manhattan to Brooklyn at any time of the night.
Second thing, sort out accommodations ASAP. In fact you should probably make sure you can get to and from the festival, and have a place to sleep before you buy tickets. Entire hotels get sold out. I know some people who are not comfortable to stay at a Airbnb out in the edge of the city but we never had issues. It's just a bit of a pain in the rear end to go back and forth.

Otherwise, pretty solid lineup, something for everybody.

After parties are just as great and a lot of people go just for those. Make sure you plan out your schedule or you'll find yourself sleeping in until 5 PM. Also so you and your friends won't be torn on where to go. Some are further out of the city and may require a bit of planning to get to. Get tickets in advance if you can.

That's about it really, the whole city blows up and it's a fantastic time. Even better if you make time to go see some sights or have someone show you around.

That being said I hate how they funnel all the techno acts in the small underground pit and I complain about that a lot but some people like being in a 300 person capacity pit the whole time. In previous years they spread it out a bit but depending on your tastes expect to hang out in one place a lot.

Firaga fucked around with this message at 18:57 on Jan 28, 2015

The pit is great during the day. Seeing Orphx, or Voices from the Lake or TommyFourSeven at 3 pm is pretty fun. But yea it's a poo poo show by sundown.

The hotel advice is huge. It;s worth it to pay a bit more for a better place. The first year I stayed at a crap motel thinking i'm a hard rear end dude who has slept in worse places. It was a terrible decision because you're basically dancing for 10 hours+ everyday. The next year I paid a bit more and got a place that was a 10 minute walk from the festival with solid AC and a nice bed. Worth every penny.
