The apartment customizer would be cool except I haven't been in my apartment in months. I guess GTA's new direction is to emulate the success of The Sims? Who is going to spend money (I assume it'll cost money) upgrading their apartment more than a time or two?

Does anyone here use their apartments?

You've got to know the rules before you can break 'em. Otherwise, it's no fun.

I see my apartment every game session. I load into my apartment by default when I log in and I prefer it that way. I can change my suit, pick a nice daily driver car, and chill out without being dropped into the world as a target. I often launch the game then go do something else for a few minutes while it loads safely into my Alta Street digs. When I'm killing time or cleaning the house IRL I plop down and spectate people on my apartment TV and occasionally put bounties or mercenaries on them. It's fun.

Apartment customization could be a goldmine if Rockstar does it right. A lot of people really like collecting and designing things, just look at how popular games like Animal Crossing and Saints Row are, and tapping into that could be a whole new racket for them.

So let's start with a bunch of super-cheap "empty" apartments, just completely unfurnished with nothing in them. Now you open an IKEA (let's call it "DIKYEA") and put a whole array of furniture up for sale, you know like beds, tables, chairs, sofas, and the like. Now make a ton of different "styles", which come in a bland vanilla color, and then offer to pay more for a different color or special design. I'm picturing Los Santos Customs but you're inside an IKEA and the teenager working there is trying to upsell you from the Egg Cream Loveseat to the Cheetah Print one. Wallpapers, carpeting, maybe make the apartments expandable with more rooms (some being exclusive to said apartments) and tack huge costs to them. Imagine them charging 200 grand to add another garage to your apartment, so you don't have to travel across the map to get specific cars, maybe that's not a one-time purchase and you can buy more.

Maybe integrate it with Heists, like "If you buy the 420 Blaze It coffee table then everyone gets a 15% starting bonus to health in your next Heist!" to reel in the tryhards. You could do so many stupid things with this, like imagine the little Jimmies who buy fleets of chrome Adders to show how rich they are, tell 'em "you can buy the never-gone stripper pole for 300k and your favorite stripper will stay for as long as you want!" and hey suddenly they might go and grab Mom's credit card. "Celebrate Independence Day with the all-new Uncle Sam fireworks and explosions barbecue kit! (Must buy the High Roller's Apartment Balcony [$400,000] to use)"

Rockstar can't keep pushing out weapons and cars forever, because the people who've been here for a year already have millions of dollars that paid for a fleet of favorites and every gun. They want people to buy the Shark Cards and give them more money, and while Heists are shaping up to be an investment as is, having something with a lower cost of entry that feeds into the lizard part of peoples' brains to collect poo poo would definitely push those cards. At least until Rockstar finally caves and introduces a Casino, because holy poo poo a Casino in GTA Online would be merciless. Rockstar could take us to the cleaners so easily with that Casino if it ever goes operational.

I do the same...minus the clothing in my garage. I'm set to spawn in my garage. I haven't been in my apartment since I looked in to check out the Christmas stuff. And before that...probably early summer?

If I change clothing I usually just go to a store out on the map.

The thing about SR is that you were able to customize you and your car - two things that were with you throughout the game. The apartment strikes me as something superfluous but it sounds like I am in the minority. I can see spending some time once or twice tinkering with it but if as you mentioned heists are going to be an investment I'd prefer to spend my money on things that impact my gameplay.

Nah, I'm with you. I could give a poo poo less about the apartments, I'm never in them. Unless they add something to it that earns me RP or cash, gently caress it.

It's all about the rewards beyond just the cash, man.

I've played some games that offered exclusive rewards to high rollers, like in Test Drive Unlimited 2 or PlayStation Home, and GTA Online could easily fit into that niche. Whip up some goodies, like exclusive cars, gun-skins, clothing, or even apartments then tell people that they need to win X amount of dollars in their career at Y game to unlock them. Divide the place between low and high rollers, give it that mystique that makes people want to be a high roller (where they'll lose money even faster) and then dot the place full of convenient ATMs shelling Shark Cards. It's so predatory but something I see the community falling for hook, line, and sinker.
