Latest icc statement on Aus Vs Bangladesh

quote:

Our thoughts are with people who have been adversely affected. As the forecast for Brisbane has improved somewhat, there is a chance at this stage that play can go ahead today, perhaps with reduced overs.

While that chance exists, match officials will try to give the teams the chance to compete for maximum points as there are no reserve days during the pool stage of the tournament. Once the situation becomes clear later in the day, ticket holders will be advised about any potential refunds.

It often is.

The Windies have done better than I thought they would after 10 overs, and yet still worse than they could have.

The middle bats have been very good for Windies once again, but if their bowling and fielding against Ireland is any indication they could still crash hilariously.

No, this tournament is only six weeks long with 14 teams, 14 stadiums and one game a day. How could they possibly find the time or space to have a reserve day?

Pakistan's strength is their bowling, but so is the Windies' weakness.

The Windies bowling can do some utterly, utterly dismal spells at the best of times, and Narine isn't even here because he can't trust his action. Pakistan do some hilarious batting collapses when they feel like it, but Afridi likes world cups for whatever reason.

It's not lost.

So how bad is it for Pakistan for their lead off man to go out on the 2nd ball? Are the better batters at the top of the lineup or spreadout?

They still have competent batsmen in positions 3-8 but when you lose wickets this early your aggressive batsmen who should be batting the last 10 overs will probably have to come in earlier and bat more defensively. In other words losing early wickets always has a knock-on effect on your overall run rate.

A cricket ball behaves differently as it ages, and a new ball is often thought of as being particularly dangerous. So your openers aren't always the best batsmen, but they generally face the new ball better than anyone else in the side. Even if they don't kick on to get a high score they hang around and blunt the attack long enough for the shine to come off the ball, letting your number three and four batsmen (who might score faster and more freely) come in at a safer point.

Pakistan look hosed.
