New hot chip. More hot chip. Dope.

Also it has a "Every day of my life" sample i've heard somewhere else.

I like that. Joyous. Melancholy. Video didn't feature a a bald Christ destroying everyone with lasers, though, which was disappointing.

My kneejerk reaction is that he's at least equaled Fear Fun. As I listened to it, I was worried we wouldn't get one heavy track like "Hollywood Forever Cemetery Sings" but it came on the back end with "The Ideal Husband."

That said, I'm not sure what to make of "True Affection."

I actually liked True Affection, it's pretty good even if it doesn't match the rest of the album's sound.

poo poo I figured that sample out: DJ Rashad every day of my life. Which itself sampled first choice - Let No Man Put Asunder. I wonder if its a homage, timing, or a known house sample.

Oops. I dumb.

Here are some older tracks I just stumbled upon recently and hope are new listens for some of you guys.

I'm a sucker for retro sounding and/or lo-fi sounding music. I like that dreamy almost-shoegaze vibe in songs. I guess that's why when I heard Molly Nilsson's I Hope You Die on the radio I fell in love with it right away. It makes use of a repeating synth line, distant and muffled vocals, and pairs it with a sharp snare. In my opinion, a great song to just turn on and do some chores or something to. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=psFOXihqW-Y

Spring and summertime are coming up and nothing feels better than rolling down your car windows and just driving to beach-y tunes. I think Catamaran by Allah-Las embodies that feeling of carefree bliss perfectly https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yIJ-RsIO1eA

You might know of Phil Jones from Washed Out fame. He plays the keyboard and has his own project called Dog Bite. It follows that same vein of sleepy-sex music that made Washed Out famous, but it's a bit more adventurous in its use of guitars, melodies, and vocals. Here are two of my favorites Hunting Season and Dream Feast, respectively https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a_mxG047kyA /// https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ioppo0fqcS4

Jessica Jalbert is kind of a mystery to me. I can't find much information on her, but her song Lack of a Lake is simply beautiful. Similar to the feeling I got from Allah-Las up above the song is relaxed, warm, and features twanging guitars that accentuate Jalbert's wistful singing.

Motorama is a Russian band that sounds like they'd be right at home in a pretentious wine bar in Silverlake or some hip college bar in an east coast big city. Here's a song from the older release Alps entitled Ghost https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=goX0v7pzmcc. The vocals remind me of Cold Cave, but the instruments are reminiscent of French Films or The Drums.

In case it isn't obvious, I am really into the beach-rock/psychedelic resurgence that's been happening these past couple of years. I'd say SW/MM/NG is part of a group of bands similar to Real Estate that make some really awesome music to chill out to. That being said, here is yet another song I am sharing with you guys that features distant, twanging guitars and listless vocals. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kLzDvJftibI

Waxahatchee is the project of Katie Crutchfield. She's prepping to drop a new album and has released this single titled Air https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O2BpdpmqkDA. I love the chorus. Gave me chills.

For a little throwback I wanted to throw a song from The Zombies in here. I probably wouldn't be able to distinguish The Zombies from half the bands I just posted. I think we all know that artists derive a lot of their creativity and direction from past influences, but it's always a trip to listen to two different songs separated by several decades and be able to hear the similarities for yourself. Despite being from the 60's I only just now heard about The Zombies, but better nate than lever.

Off the top of my head you might like Great Lake Swimmers, Half Moon Run, Blitzen Trapper, Dawes, Turin Brakes, Radical Face, The Decemberists, and Rocky Votolato. They all follow a similar style that's found a lot in folk music and, in my opinion, share a common ground in terms of sound.

Anyway, Lower Dens is releasing a new album at the end of March and she released a single titled To Die In L.A. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bP9RmrhRrLo. I've never really been a fan of Lower Dens besides their song I Get Nervous, but a lot of people seem stoked for her new release. I gotta say I enjoy this new song a lot.

I just came back from seeing The Decemberists live, and it was a rather amazing concert. The mixing was superb, they were in a good mood and the audience behaved. They played an interesting mix of new and old, and not necessarily the songs I would have expected. I'm not crazy about one or two songs from the new album ("Philomena" & "Cavalry Captain"), though they were not too bad live, while "Carolina Low" was pretty great. And while I have trouble with the Hazards of Love album more generally, the block of three songs they played were full of energy and quite enchanting live.

code:
The Singer Addresses His Audience
Cavalry Captain
Down by the Water
Calamity Song
Grace Cathedral Hill
Philomena
The Wrong Year
The Island
Los Angeles, I'm Yours
Carolina Low
A Bower Scene
Won't Want for Love (Margaret in the Taiga)
The Rake's Song
Make You Better
The Legionnaire's Lament
16 Military Wives
O Valencia!
Encore:
12/17/12
A Beginning Song
Encore 2:
The Mariner's Revenge Song
If you have a chance, go see them. Colin was chatty, had some funny bits and banter (Calamity song with the text "Hank, eat your Oatmeal") and they included the audience well. More than that, they felt really at easy, secure and were really fun because of that. Also, "The Island" is absolutely amazing live.
