I just saw Doomtree, Open Mike Eagle and Greg Grease. I've gotta say, I didn't expect the craziest rap show I've seen since moving to Chicago to be something other than Run the Jewels or Danny Brown, but stuffing five MCs on one stage in a 500-person venue will do that. I also have newfound respect for Open Mike Eagle. I loved Dark Comedy anyway, but seeing him act as his own DJ and really listening to some of his lyrics (when his mic cord wasn't coming loose anyway) made me wonder why he doesn't get more publicity.

RTJ at this really small venue sometime right before rtj2 released like at the start of their tour. That poo poo was something else it was incredible. But I also really enjoyed Danny brown, Flatbush zombies, and Nas.

E: to elaborate on London, he played the same song like three times through out show because he didn't give a gently caress or some poo poo like that, he had a live band but it all just sounded terrible. The crowd was so bored and getting irritated and people were relieved by the time he left. This was during sxsw and the next act was young thug who was 20 minutes late and only played 3-4 songs very short set and it was still better than London. Dude loving sucks live

That's why he doesn't get more publicity. You think anyone listens to lyrics now?

But for a more in-depth answer, it's largely to do with the fact that his music isn't immediately marketable and he's not a "new" act so there's not gonna be a lot of buzz. Although him (and the hellfyre dudes) do get mentions in the regular rap blogosphere and often have some crossover so he's not entirely unknown. It's just his stuff isn't all that conducive (on the surface) to the festival circuit and he's sure not getting on MTV and radio and poo poo so there's no easy place to put that kind of music. Also I mentioned it before but his new EP was also really good, a great compliment to Dark Comedy.

Also going back a bit, I asked for some decent newer Juicy J songs and really dug the ones that were posted. Deep Down South is serious. Wish he did more poo poo like that but what you gonna do.

I mean obviously I don't expect to him to get radio play but I feel like he should be bigger even just in the underground. If somebody as out there and inaccessible as DOOM can have a sustained moderately successful career then I feel like he should be able to do the same. I guess his ceiling is like Busdriver or something (although I admittedly don't know how popular he really is). I suppose he's better suited to tiny clubs though. And yeah I really need to listen to that EP because the two songs he played from it were incredible.

He should go around opening for Hannibal Burress.

Open Mike Eagle's probably as popular as Aesop or Atmosphere are currently. Also even though he's been around for awhile, they all got started and were HUGE during the big independent boon of the early 2000s (and of course El-P been around since the mid 90's). RTJ is more popular by far than all of them, but they're also a bit more festival friendly and fit the current music zeitgeist better.

Dour Candy is great, but I've never been able to get much into billy woods's other stuff. And yeah Dark Comedy was easily my top album of last year (also check Busdriver and Nocando's albums from last year).

And Hannibal Burress is prob my fav comic working. I actually picked up both of his comedy central specials, and it sucked he didn't hit MI on his recent tour

I don't know, I just saw Aesop headlining a venue that's twice as large than the one I just saw OME as a support act, and Atmosphere seem to be festival regulars even if their actual material has fallen off a lot.

Going by the all-powerful statistic of Facebook Likes, OME has less than 11,000. Atmosphere have over 1.1 million. Aesop Rock has 147k, which is far less than I expected.

EDIT: Run the Jewels only have 63k :psyduck: They've had less than two years to accumulate those, though, and it's more than El-P or Killer Mike.

I don't think I'd agree with that. Atmosphere still plays shows at huge casino venues like every year or so around here even if their new music isn't getting as much buzz as it used to. And I think Aesop Rock had a lot more buzz when Skelethon came out than Open Mike Eagle did when Dark Comedy came out, and I think more people will start talking about him when he comes out with another solo album. He just hasn't released a solo album in like three years and people don't care as much about the stuff he does with Rob Sonic and Kimya Dawson.

Did the instrumental hip hop thread disappear? One of the dudes from Blue Sky Black Death put out his own instrumental album and it's really good if you're into those sorts of airy instrumentals.

https://ultraglacial.bandcamp.com/album/sirens
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PUJRPIRuJE8

e: For a statistic slightly more relevant than Facebook likes, Aesop Rock's song Cat Food which came out in January has 260k plays on Spotify, which is more than double any of Open Mike Eagle's highest played songs.
