I remember using one of those on work experience at an IT firm in the mid/late 90s... At the time it was pretty incredible to have a machine that size running the full version of windows!

Technically what was described had no actual crime mentioned. They could be doing that with their own legal copy for personal convenience.

I saw one of these ads while I was off sick from work recently. For half an hour this strange old couple told me all about an amazing 5 CD collection of golden 1950s/1960s love songs. All your old favourites, so many memories! Only $89.95!

Even my parents know how to use iTunes. Is there still an audience for these things?

It's only when you give that copy to someone else that it becomes a crime. Until then it's just a copy you keep for your own purposes. Some EULAs might prohibit that sort of thing but I don't think many of those have actually stood up in court.

I saw one not long ago for Kids Bop where not only was it comically overpriced but the hook was that you would get a second copy FOR FREE. Which like, OK, one for the house, one for the car, an extra for when your kids destroy it, but, really? $10 to download it and burn as many as you want, not an option?

I loved c64 pirates. As a 10 y/o I saved up pocket money for years to buy a s/h c64 for $100, it's not like I had cash to buy many $50 games afterwards :(
I bought some $10 codemaster games, and a few $30 disappointing major titles but when prices went up, I was priced out of the market.

I listen to kids bop...in my minivan... it's horrible. But then I don't really listen to much pop music. It's gotten to the point where I hear the real version of the song and it sounds off to me.

I went for super stud.
With Super Hits of Some Decade collections I get the appeal. Maybe it's all on iTunes but what if they can't remember the correct name of the performer, album, or song? Or they remember the name of the band but find that they put out a dozen albums and don't want to sort through them all to find their two big hits? And they can't form a decent google search, they can't figure out an mp3 player, they like physical media, they think burned cds are tacky, they . . .gently caress it. Just buy granddad the cds so he can read the liner notes and rock out to 1910 Fruitgum Company.

I can't find any images or videos of it, but when you loaded a game it would say something like

"100 blocks remaining", and it would slowly countdown to zero. If there were any errors it'd ask you to rewind 5 blocks or so, over and over.

I played these games a lot:

Those commercials were so common when I was a kid. There are a few songs that I only think of in snippets because I heard them so often from the commercials.

Googling for K-Tel records I immediately found one I bought back then. The K-Tel ones were superior to compilations that were all cover versions by nameless performers. I still have this one but haven't owned a record player in a long time. I bought it around 1974.

Here's something that would never exist again, the PC Transporter. It was a drive that enabled you to use DOS programs on Apple 2GS computers. I had one and it was the best thing ever because it let me play games that you could get anywhere, until everything went to 3.5 disks. That's kind of like having something that enables you to pay Wii games on a playstation. I think the Colecovision had something like that that enabled you to play Atari games on it.

Some people still have cassettes oddly enough and a collection of them that they switch into their new car when they get rid of their old one.

Though speaking of obsolete technology remember those adapter kits that let you plug in a portable CD player into your tape deck? You know, for people too poor to get a read stereo system or that just had an ancient car? I still have one somewhere, makes me kind of nostalgic.
