R.I.P., but at least you didn't die to a grue six steps away from the chaos gate. Hate The Sun corruption summoned globs of darkness while i was wearing the chaos regalia to speed up the corruption process so i could enter the gate, but i forgot that the artifacts doomed you. the nethackingest, most shameful way to die in ADOM.

While we're at it, here's probably the most terrifying monster in the game. He nearly one-turn-killed my UCG character when I attacked him "for fun".

quote:

Demented ratlings seem to have 392 hitpoints on the average. Usually they
attack 16 times. A hit causes 86-159 points of damage (114 on the average).
They seem to have a speed of 124-244 (140 on the average).

That was before the "modern" patches, dunno how's he now.

I don't think Biskup has touched the demented ratling, aside from repeatedly breaking his ability to accept artifact gloves. It's been broken and "fixed" like 4 times now. Shopkeepers level up in a similar way too now when you sell them artifacts. It gets scary quickly with Waldenbrook.

Latest free version is a bit old (prerelease 23), and the tiles version of it runs like garbage for some reason but I think the ascii version might be fine. Otherwise you have to drop money for the up-to-date backer release if you want it now. I think that when the game is finished it'll do the TOME thing of being free to download, with the Steam/pay version having some perks but mostly being a donating to the developers type thing, but I might be misremembering that.

There haven't been any public prereleases because they've mostly been polishing and bugfixing for the eventual Steam release. There hasn't been any new content added since the Ice Queen's Domain a while back. It's starting to look like a premium tier indie title at this point.

Yeah the issue tracker (incidentally we're 82% of the way to the Steam release apparently) is pretty much entirely bugfixes at this point. The big stuff missing from the latest public release is stuff like Statues and mindcraft visual effects. Just pretend that around every 50 games you walked over something that instantly turned you permanently invisible, or referenced a fantasy novel or corrupted you or something. And make sure to save frequently starting around the casino because that's when poo poo gets a bit buggy. Crashing after clearing two temples and losing that progress sucks.

I dunno... yeah depending what you class as good? Completely anecdotal but I'd say I've gone 50/50 at best on getting the amulet as a drop or a wish by the time I've cleared all non-ID content I can without passing Kelevaster, including Darkforge and drinking all pools. 50/50 might not sound that bad but it sucks when you've gone to the trouble of doing all the other prep for an ultra and not died and the amulet just won't drop.

As for whether challenges should be a combination of luck and skill or just skill, I think there's room for an element of luck in the survival of your character while attempting to conquer the added difficulties the challenge throws at you, but the luck factor should not revolve around whether or not you get a specific random drop.

Maybe it's because I'm very bad at ADOM so I just take what I can get in terms of winning it but I don't really see a problem with some special superending only being available with a mix of effort and luck. Isn't there another ending where you need to do an ID-dive that's basically an ultra ending for people who didn't get lucky with the amulet?

That reminds me I was wondering if there was a game like pokemon with the combat system like it is and loads of monsters to catch/train etc, except if one of your creatures died it was gone for good. I mean I guess you could do that with pokemon by just not using a pokemon once it has died, but, Pokemon isn't for PC.

I think I saw a streamer doing what I mean, although I only watched for a few minutes so I am not sure if that is what he was doing or not, but when two of his pokemon died he put them both in the PC, so I assume that is what he was doing.

You've got guts! Come to my village, I'll buy you lunch.
Luck-based gameplay is boring and terrible except possibly in games that involve 2+ players and hidden information, and even there it's tricky to get it right.

e: Small amounts of variance in combat (for example) can be a good way to force players to react flexibly instead of staring at a screen for 10 minutes, coming up with a puzzle-like solution, and implementing it, but gating endings or other large chunks of content on luck of the draw is dumb. It proves nothing about the player's ability, only their dedication.

I didn't die, but now I'll always be short one kill.

Also, I only just now realized that the missile launcher has no rocket jump and I really should have held on to my rocket launcher.

code:
ToxicFrog, level 14 Hell Knight 2nd Lieutenant Technician,
defeated the Mastermind at the City of Dis.
He survived 117819 turns and scored 223902 points.
He played for 4 hours, 3 minutes and 14 seconds.
He wasn't afraid to be hurt plenty.

He killed 844 out of 845 hellspawn. (99%)
He was a real killing machine...

Cyberdemon's Head
UAC Star (bronze cluster)
Aurora Medallion
Grim Reaper's Badge
Hell Armorer Badge
Hell Champion Medal
UAC Silver Badge
The dice were extremely kind to me this game. How kind? This kind:

code:
[a] [ Armor ] Angelic Armor [7/7] (82%)
[b] [ Weapon ] plasmatic super shotgun (8d4)x2 [0/2]
[c] [ Boots ] plasteel boots [4/4] (100%) (APT)
[d] [ Prepared ] nanomachic missile launcher (6d6)
The Deimos Lab coughed up a bunch of bulk packs, which was disappointing until I killed the Shamblers and got two nano packs, at which point, well, there's not much to do except assemble an infinite ammo missile launcher, take Fireangel as my master trait, and rampage unstoppably through the rest of the game, which is pretty much what I did. It also gave me a Super Shotgun to replace my Focused Double Shotgun, which went nicely with the Sniper Pack I found later.

Not pictured: my nuclear BFG and red power armour.

As mentioned earlier, I was on track for 100% kills and then I went and attempted the Unholy Cathedral. Looking at the mortem, I realize I completely missed the City of Skulls, which I could have stomped easily and which -- had I gotten lucky with Rage Skulls -- might have amped me up enough to take on the Angel of Death.

I did manage to clear Mt. Erebus again, which is still new and exciting. And of course having regenerating power armour, immunity to fire, and unlimited missiles made Limbo trivial. No full win; any thermies that generated on the way down must have been destroyed by my missiles.

I'm also, now that I've assembled a Nanomachinic Weapon, just four assemblies away from the Technician Diamond Badge.

Another Caves of Qud question: can stats be drained or anything like that? I was shooting for Expert Disassemble with this guy I'm playing, got my Intelligence up to 24, hit a level-up and got a bonus attribute point, went to allocate it and somewhere along the way my Intelligence dropped to 20. Where did it go? I'd chalk this up to me just getting confused somehow but it has to have been at least 23 at some earlier point because I was able to buy Tinkering II.

fe: also looking at the skill screen I appear to be able to buy Masterful Harvesting (needs 21 Int) even though I don't meet the requirements

You were right, it was an equipment thing, but I still can't figure out exactly what. Here's all the stuff I was wearing:

Here's what I did/what happens (I can replicate this if I reload the save):

  • If I take all my stuff off piece by piece and page over to the status screen each time to check my stats, my Int stays at 20. Even with all gear removed it's still 20
  • If however I unequip everything, check my stats in the status screen (Int still 20), then press Escape to go back to the game map, then go back to the status screen again, my Int returns to 24
  • If I then re-equip everything (all of the same gear as before) my Int doesn't return to 20 but stays at 24

No idea what's going on here. None of this gear should be affecting my Int, right?

Having gained a few more levels in adom I decided to try and clean out darkforge. Got garbage for the weapons and armor, but my main objective was the pools hoping to get a wish so I could continue this awful quest.

I didn't get one!

But I think I made out okay. I wound up growing gils from a corruption, but that's pretty damned minor and now I can explore the water dragon's cave and get myself killed trying to rob it if i find a source of wishes.

Edit: Hypothetical - Make it so Khelly's wounds are not fatal if you make it to him within X days of game time, and if that time passes, then require the amulet. There, now it's skill based but offers an escape via luck.

Qud really is one of the coolest roguelikes around. I think I've finally settled on a build I like which is basically a quadruple axe wielding, corrosive gas spewing, carapaced, paralyzing venom stinger scorpion marauder.

I thought I was completely hosed when I ran into this group of enemies led by a fire spewing miniboss dude, but a corrosive gas burst does wonders for trimming down a large group of enemies. The paralyzing sting also lets me get some much needed free hits in on tougher enemies.

Yeah, in the system menu you can change it in town at any time. Savage is only accessible from there, since you'll probably want to do some preliminary play in easy or normal, because Savage is serious bizness. It's locked in for the duration of any individual dungeon run though.

Sometimes I just have to say gently caress RNG to roguelikes. Playing crawl and have made it to D:9 (after an ossuary that cursed half my gear) and found two enchant weapon scrolls, an acquirement scroll, and no remove curse at all. I had to burn both echant weapon scrolls to uncurse weapons, which felt a bit silly, to say the least (playing a caster though, so it's not too terrible. It's an irritating feeling to be carrying around better gear and be completely unable to swap to it though.
