Anyone heading to Roadburn this year and haven't secured accommodation or stuck with the cold wet campsite? Our usual crew of 7 of us have booked two 4-bed chalets for Tuesday-Monday, so we've got one more space to fill. Expect chill people, weed, mushrooms, lots of card games and loud stoner metal during downtime. Send me a PM if you're interested!

Currently enjoying Satori Junk's new album, sounds in line with the likes of Electric Wizard and Dopelord.

I'm spinning the new Elder album right now and I'm only on the second song and it's already amazing.

Also, any New England-are folks going to the Inter Arma show in Boston on April 11th? It's at an oddly early time of the day. Still going to be awesome. Aside from Yautja, Forn and The Proselyte will be playing with them.

I've made it through the whole album about 7 times now and having trouble coming up with anything smart to say. It's a bit overwhelming and it's long and dense and it's not like Dead Roots Stirring but it's really fantastic. Those dudes have got a thing going on.

Yeah, It's an amazing record alright. They've got such good chemistry between them but the guitar work especially is stunning.

If I were to nitpick, I'd say that the vocals are a bit uninspired at times. Also I'm wondering how it will hold up live, considering there are multiple guitar parts overdubbed pretty much from start to finish, and they only have one guitarist.

I didn't realize that "Stoner/Doom" rock was a genre (in the words of Brant Bjork, "there's just good rock albums") but I'd been listening to Jalamanta for years and years before I realized Bjork was the drummer for Kyuss, which got me into them.

I dig the Sabbath-esque, twangy (?) sounds of Kyuss, The Obsessed, and some of Bjork's solo work. Who are some other bands within the genre that veer towards more of a "rock and roll" sound versus a heavier one?

I don't know how much of a Sabbath sound you'll get from some of these, but they're definitely more r&r than super-heavy: Troubled Horse, Witchcraft, Graveyard, Orchid (total Sabbath worship there).

the whole desert scene i guess? off the top of my head: che, hermano, fatso jetson, nebula, unida, yawning man and slo burn. the atomic bitchwax, too altho they're not from there. acrimony.

then check out the maryland doom scene, who the obsessed are a part of. there's heavier stuff, but a lot of as you said, rock and roll sounding sabbath worship. good stuff.

Cross posting from the metal thread:

I'm wondering if any goons are interested in helping me out with something.

As some of you know, I run the site MetalTours.US and I'm looking for contributors who can act as local reps to keep shows and venues in their area accurate and up to date. I have a full location search on the site, but it's only as accurate as the event venue descriptions are. Most tour announcements only give the venue name and city, and are commonly innacurate (wrong city, venue name spelled wrong, etc). When I import them into the database on my website, the google map api has a hard time finding some of them. I'm probably at 60-70% accuracy now, but it's a huge pain in the rear end. This leads me to going to each individual venue and confirming the address is correct (I have over 700 venues already). Also, I'm just adding tours and don't get a lot of the smaller events (one-off shows, smaller fests, whatever) but I want to get as many events as I can on there.

Anyways, if any of you goons are interested, edit: you can register here http://metaltours.us/contribute/

Dead Roots Stirring is currently my favorite album of all time but I am in no rush to see Elder live. They sound kind of bad.

Since you like the Obsessed, check out Wino's other bands, especially Spirit Caravan: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ExsrTuTIkrM

Fu Manchu are another cornerstoner band. They have lots of good albums, but IMO the two essential ones are In Search Of and The Action Is Go. Brant plays drums on the latter: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EG6F1m1Gi4k

There are a few Clutch albums you might like, specifically Pure Rock Fury and Blast Tyrant (especially this one).

Also, Monster Magnet - namely Dopes to Infinity and Powetrip (I only just recently got into these guys myself after a few false starts).

And Earth - Pentastar, In the Style of Demons.

The Greenleafs - Nest of Vipers.

Lowrider (they broke up a long time ago but they did a split with Nebula and an album that was really good. Utterly shameless Kyuss worship).

Is it okay to plug a friend's band, even if they're kinda in limbo right now? My buddy Steve's project (well, one of a couple) is a stoner/sludge/doomish thing that's just a bass guitar and drums. I don't know when they'll be doing more stuff, but their self-titled and the Owl EP are both really cool.

I have been listening to Sabbath and Sleep for years but never found any other metal bands that I liked at all. When I was a kid I lived in a punk house outside of DC and we had a million bands play in our basement and like half of them were "metal" bands but they all sounded like Minor Threat with more bass. I hated all of it and never really bothered with metal after that. Like a year ago I discovered Electric Wizard though them I have found a few more bands but nothing that is anywhere close to the Sabbath/Sleep quality level. I recognize Kyuss is a good band but they and stuff like that has never clicked for me. I found this thread a few days ago and have been going through the stuff in the OP, Obsession, Pentagram, and Dopefight have been the ones I have dug the most so far.

In any event, I live in MD and would love to go to some shows, where do I find info on this stuff?

well there used to be at least, not sure what the situation is now. some bands are still active, that much i do know.

i'll try to make a list for you:

pentagram: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jwjNY2WGUjw

these guys are called the american sabbath, which is both fair since they're awesome like sabbath and unfair since they're def. not some uninspired sabbath worship band. they're certainly one of the best heavy rock bands ever.

wino weinrich (saint vitus, the obsessed, spirit caravan, the hidden hand, wino)

ok this guy is part of the scene, the godfather of it you could say. he started out in a band called warhorse, then started the obsessed in the early 80s. he put the obsessed on hold to join saint vitus and record some of the best doom metal ever. after vitus split, he put the obsessed back together and recorded more best doom metal ever. in the 90s, vitus reformed and he basically just recorded awesome stuff with 2-3 bands and hasn't stopped since.

saint vitus: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VqUGMzVo7SI
the obsessed: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H-5eyVeEbhk

then some maryland stuff:

also read this: http://theobelisk.net/obelisk/2010/06/24/where-to-start-maryland-doom-in-five-easy-records/

some more rec's, i'm trying to go with stuff that's like sabbath or kyuss but not just worship:

Holy poo poo dude, that is amazing! I cannot wait to get home and pour over this stuff.

Oddly enough, my girlfriend listens to Pentagram from time to time. She grew up in Baltimore and her dad was into Sabbath and stuff like that back in the day so she grew up with it a bit. She is in the same situation I am, liking a specific band or two but never really finding much else like it. Very excited to doom it up!
