Yes they would, and also the bill for recovering the vehicle. A lot of people forget that when driving around The Ring in Germany and gently caress up.

Anyone know what those rubber/plastic things were that they used for bumpers on the pivoting front end? Cone shaped, male and female ends, looked like black rubber. Do those things have a name? Any idea where they can be found? I got a project that needs something a lot like that. He says "I've turned up these", I suspect they may be custom made, ie literally "turned up" on a lathe. Might have to talk to a machine shop and see if they could make something for you.

Look at the position the driver has to be in, around 3/4 of the way in. That looks really uncomfortable

Not saying it's comfortable, but it isn't like the driving position is specific to the FWD Nissan.

I wonder how much slower F1 would be if they added a rule that drivers needed to use a natural sitting position, defined by their feet being below their rear end. And I know their seats are all custom built to support the driver perfectly, but the idea of sitting with my chin pressed towards my chest for extended periods makes me sore just thinking about it.

Bikers get pressed into the seat, dudes with four tires get smushed from side to side at every corner. Neck fatigue is a big problem any time an amateur gets a shot at riding in an F1 car.

Yeah, it is a lot of wok and just taking an ordinary road bike to a trackday/massive twisty road blitz has you feeling like you've had the poo poo kicked out of you afterward. You don't get to sit there passively and just resist the g forces, you have to do physical work to make the bike go around corners, you're an integral part of the steering/suspension.

“Motocross by far requires the highest level of combined fitness of any sport on the face of the earth, bar none.” States Spencer, “I've spent 5 tours (Tour de France) with Lance Armstrong and Lance is no slouch. But Lances’ overall general fitness doesn't even compare to the overall fitness of a motocross racer.” - Jeff Spencer

I'm not trying to argue that riders are wusses. I fully appreciate their fitness levels regardless of the number of tires. I'm just saying they experience the forces of cornering a bit differently.

I imagine the forces your neck goes through in an F1 car are unreal. I also imagine the regular day-to-day 'just a part of the job' crashes a MotoGP rider goes through are probably a bit more rough. Though the extreme sides of both sports are equally brutal and final.

A more comfortable driver can stay focused on turning fast laps for longer and in LeMans they are in there for like 4 hours at a time. So that Nissan is about as comfortable as they get.

Is there a reason why they don't use some sort of head bracing system? Risk of decapitation in a crash I guess? Maybe something that attaches to your shoulders would help while being safer.

They do use HANS, but that doesn't mean that it takes the stress away. I'd guess that anything stiff enough to take the load would be too limiting. The drivers need to be able to turn their heads. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/HANS_device

The drivers need to be able to turn their heads. That doesn't brace your next, and it's only front-back crash protection. For lateral loads you can rest your head on the bolsters they put in F1 cars, and you see drivers doing this at long races on tracks with sweeping fast corners when they're a bit unfit or prefer to economize their movement (Kimi).

I've heard F1 drivers say their cars are pretty cozy after the seats are molded to their bodies. Isn't there a current driver on the schedule who naps in his car from time to time in between practice/qualifying sessions?
