I park them close together on purpose, but I think the lens / perspective makes it look closer together than it really is.

That's the thing, in the US we get very few euro vans. The only thing we normally see are Dodge-branded Mercedes Sprinters, sometimes Sprinters themselves. There are other monstrosities like the huge Nissan thing and tiny Ford car-based vans, but that form factor hasn't caught on here. So, that VW around here would be a hugely awesome troll.

Ford has the actual Transit van (as opposed to the little Transit Connect) in the US now, though I've not seen one on the road yet. And the Dodge is now FWD Fiat-based, rather than MB. I have seen one of those, and they look a bit goofy.
GM is the only USDM that's still making an old-school American-style van.

I just bought 2 transit vans for the company I work for. The 1/4 ton and 3/4 ton models have both been great so far, way more room than the classic Chevy vans and way better gas mileage.

Europe is littered with them, and other similar cheap poo poo vans. Awful hateful, badly-made shitboxes that should all be dumped in the ocean and never seen or mentioned again.

Sprinters, Crafters and a handful of others can stay. Ivecos are borderline.

We had Sprinter 4x4s in the military when I did my military service, we called them "Sprintelände" (Sprinter + Gelände, but also a pun about how absolute poo poo they are as elände means "miserable thing" in swedish). The Sprinter is built to a price just as much as all other miserable piles in that market segment.

Correct, is the 90. 1991 200tdi. 2.5litre station wagon. Minus the seats in the back, which friustratingly makes my insurance about £100 more.

I think it's Rutland.. Only had it a few days so haven't even had a chance to go through the books yet. It needs a new cross-member at the back, and a ton of other little things fixing. I've got my work cut out, that's for sure.

Bonus Terrier checking it out.

I know they aren't standard Landy wheels, my instinct is telling me Suzuki, possibly a Grand Vitara? And offers on that suggestion?

And a quick question regarding small patches of rust.. Do you lot find that rust-inhibiting paints work well enough? don't wanna go round with a grinder just yet.

Nice!

I have used a spray can of the rust inhibitor on the JJJJAAAAAGGGGG and it seems to work really well. Granted its inside right now, but I just wanted to stop anything further until I can get in and start cutting out rust.

POR-15 (I am not sure what they call it in the UK) is awesome, go look for Moecows Milktruck Megathread, he turned a complete heap into something awesome.

You could buy a back seat second hand for £100 or less before next year. Did it really make the insurance cost more having it as 3 seats rather than 4/5? Mine is down as 4 seats on the insurance docs but i don't think they have ever actually asked me.

There are poo poo loads of aftermarket landy wheels available.

You can buy por-15 from Frost. If you are doing multiple small patches over time buy the multipack of small tins as they tend to go off. I've been using a combo of POR-15, hammered screwfix-erite (Its better than the real stuff since they changed the formula and about 1/3rd of the price) and rust converter on mine (two together where applicable). POR-15 needs proper surface prep doing to make it stick and actually be worthwhile.

Daft huh, that it costs more to potentially injure two people as opposed to 7. Should have just said it had standard seating and not needed a custom policy written for me. I've got 14 days cancellation if I want it, so I may find a specialist insurer to do it for cheaper.

I also quite like the wheels, I will be keeping them.

I had loads of hassle insuring my camper converted landy because in the back the seats converted into the bed rather than both being separate items (there was a specific clause in their policy saying it needed about this!). The fact that the back seats did or didn't have seatbelts was irrelevant as was the fact that I was only insuring it with 2 seats (the front ones). Insurance is stupid.

My 2 door TDI Golf is somehow more expensive than a 4dr TDI Golf on my insurance. Insurance makes no sense sometimes. I mean, it's got 140hp, what does it matter how many doors it has.

Mostly just statistics and risk profiles. If a higher proportion of 2-doors get into wrecks than 4-doors because they tend to be owned by young dumb males, then you unfortunately get lumped in with them by owning a 2-door.

But there are a ton of factors and variables and each company will have different results.

Ya, I understand that part, but it being a TDI kinda means its slow as balls, and should probably be cheaper to insure. Apparently the engine type doesn't matter, as it's still a 4cyl turbo, because reasons....

Looking forward to doubling my insurance when I get the R.

I may've posted this before.. dunno..

When not driving the van, which is rare, i have a 2004 VW Golf wagon sport. 1.9-litre TDI PD 130bhp engine, 6-speed manual.

Not a whole lot done to it, that can be seen. But has larger front brakes (312mm), larger rear brakes (256mm vented), a larger turbo from a 160bhp engine, remapped to ~180bhp/300lb/ft, and a Peloquin limited slip diff. Need a bigger intercooler, and maybe some other tweaks for the suspension in the future.

Very comfortable and economical, very reliable and yet pretty quick when you want her to be. Catches a lot of people off-guard, looks like a standard diesel wagon, but shifts pretty well.

Very capable, and towed my van when the gearbox for it was overhauled and i needed to move it to my old shop to refit the box.
