Anyone here either have or have seen in person the Old Glory 10mm Saracens? I am trying to find a good line to use as a substitute for a 10mm Haradrim army for Lord of the Rings games. I thought it would be easy since there are a fair number of Arab-esque lines out there but frankly they either all seem to look kind of bad or, like the Old Glory ones I linked there, its really hard to tell how they look without painted samples. I don't know whats up with some of these miniature companies, the Old Glory site itself doesn't even have pictures of its own minis from that line and they aren't the only ones to be lacking pictures of their own products. Who just buys minis without looking at them first?

I've got a bunch of Old Glory Vikings, but no Battle of Five Armies to compare them against. I remember Warmaster being a bit loose with the scale between armies, and I assume B5A might suffer the same. One thing I can tell you is that the Viking infantry strips are about 30mm long vs WM's 35mm ones. So you'll need loose figures, cut strips, or base decorations if you want to fill a 20x40 base the same way.

I found a set of elastic braces inexpensively at Goodwill. Then, I removed the crappy little snap clips and connect them to my trousers via split rings. This works better on heavier work pants than dressier trousers, as the split rings have begun to wear through the belt loops on my slacks. I'm thinking about stitching some kevlar thread into the edges to prevent further wear. The thin leather on the braces is also starting to wear, but I've worn them nearly daily for a year. I may replace the leather loops with some heavier scraps. I'm sure I can find something.

That's merely your growing certainty about your impending death. I think a lot of people mix those two up.

If you are going to wear suspenders you should forget about snap clips and any replacement for them to tag onto your belt loops. Those are a half-measure designed to allow suspenders to work on any pair of pants. What you should do is use button fasteners, and either purchase pants with suspender buttons or add them to your existing pants. Buttons distribute the suspender pull move evenly, and also do less damage to your pants. Ask me about my model train layout.

Yes, consider genuine British Braces. It's what the finer sort wear.

Xpost from the Specialist Games thread. After lurking for months, I finally got around to shooting my old Cawdor gang. I repainted these guys recently, trying a slightly dirtier style than usual for me. Forgive the poor lighting.

That gang looks awesome! What was the impetus behind the patterns on some of the weapons? It looks kind of like a camo but I'm not sure. Also, does anyone have a simple, non-destructive solution for putting a Thunderbolt on a flying stand? I just built this sucker tonight:

Thanks! Guns were kinda ad-hoc. I was trying to do something different with each one, within the palette, while avoiding just doing edge highlighting. On some of them it worked out like camo.

Is Future a suitable gloss varnish to use before an oil wash? Never done it before, but want to weather some robits and spaceships.

Grab an acrylic rod from ebay/amazon/Michaels, and you're good to go. parabolic posted:Is Future a suitable gloss varnish to use before an oil wash? General rule is to not wash over anything that uses the same "base", so don't wash enamels over enamels, don't wash acrylic ink over acrylic ink etc.

So is there a quick and easy way to remove matt varnish from a model that doesn't require stripping it and starting over? I was applying decals to stuff and like usual I put some matt varnish down over them till I was done with other work. But I a few minutes later I looked at the decals and there was white poo poo all over them, like I just dabbed elmer's glue over the decals! I was able to remove most of it with my thumb (at the cost of some the decals) but there are a few spots were its on there for good unless I want to risk scratching the poo poo out of the paint. I think maybe I didn't wait long enough for the Micro Set I was using to dry out and it reacted with the varnish in a bad way. Edit: Never mind it turned out to be very flaky once dry and a few passes with a old toothbrush removed 99% of it. Still, scary. Numlock fucked around with this message at 04:47 on Mar 11, 2015 |

A lot of varnishes in my experience will cloud briefly and then finish drying clear, are you sure that wasn't what was happening?

Re-apply a thin layer of the same varnish, that usually works.

Hey all! The NEW Miniature Painting thread is here: http://forums.somethingawful.com/showthread.php?threadid=3705692 Meant to have this ready for the start of the year, got it about 80% done and it kind of stalled out for a while. I've added a bit more to it and there's more to go but rather than wait and wait and wait I figured best to just roll out the new info and start getting some content in there. So, enjoy!
