Gotta admit, it would be pretty funny to see a team be actually forced to use a driver in one of their cars.

well really, they're all forced to, that's why the drivers have contracts. Sauber made the mistake of signing one they shouldn't have, apparently.

I'm confused why he thinks it's a good idea to force them to run him. A payout fine but if they have to run him they're just going to send it out without bothering to put oil in it or something.

"Oh I'm sorry VDG, we're out of good front wings. But we've got this one from Simona's old Indycar she left us, that's probably as good".

I think the speculation that it's a negotiating tactic might be right- it doesn't help his case that Sauber aren't sticking to their contract if he's sitting on the side acting like he has no intention to drive, per that same contract. Of course, he might actually have to drive since Sauber reportedly don't have the money to buy him out.

The order precludes them from doing anything that stops him from participating.

He's probably forcing them to run him because 1) there's no more seats left and 2) no one else is going to sign him anyway because he's a pay driver.

It'd be like getting angry at Kimi for asking to be actually paid what he was owed after his time at Lotus.

As far as the "Team sabotages VDG's car" thing goes, there's precedent that the FIA would come down on them for this: Andrea Moda got thrown out of the sport for, among other things, blatantly running Perry McCarthy's car with no intention of having him qualify for a race.

But surely there's nothing to stop them from putting Nasr/Ericssen in the car for every free practice session, giving the best parts to the other driver, always favouring the other driver in strategy etc etc which I think is what people are suggesting rather than forgetting to put fuel in or something.

Either way the whole situation is a comedy and proof that the politics of F1 are far better than the on track stuff.

It's only a short duration because the cars cover the 300km distance (the distance that most races are) in a faster time.

The official rule is that "the distance of a Formula One race is the least number of laps exceeding 305 kilometres". I know why the race is over quickly, I just reckon the rule is wrong. The number of laps should be set for an estimated race time of ~1h30-1h40.

Exactly. It was Perry I had in mind when I wrote the post actually, they did literally deliberately not put oil in his car once.

But even if Sauber don't do anything deliberately, his mechanics are going to hate him and there just won't be the last 1% of effort in that car.

Its entirely possible that if they tried that at Monza they'd run out of fuel.

I admit the introduction of a fuel limit has caused a problem for my long-held view.

On the Sauber issue, I expect VDG to mysteriously fail a drug test. He'll protest his innocence, then years later we'll find out they spiked his drinks.

I just remembered Verstappen's age. Reminder - he is 17 years old!! And not like 17 and 364 days. He wont be 18 until a few days after the Japanese GP. He will knock about 21 - 22 months off the youngest driver to start a race record. (current holder Alguersuari 19 yrs 125 days) If he has a decent level of success it will look poo poo for F1 in my opinion.

FWIW, I agree that Monza is a bullshit race that's over too quickly and after the first chicane at the start of the race it's a foregone conclusion what the result will be. Hell, I even went to a race there (as I keep telling everyone) and I felt it was over too quickly.

vdg forcing out ericsson or nasr presumably jeopardizes funding that sauber needs to exist and thus pay its employees. none of the mechanics need to be told to hate vdg, they will do it on their own.

Vdg actually has being likely dicked over by Sauber in common with his mechanics anyway, maybe they will unite around him.

Don't worry guys, Ron knows the guy who drives the crane.

I think it's important to remember that VdG already paid Sauber last year, with the intention that he was going to drive this year. Further, his main sponsor is likely his wife's billionaire father.

So Sauber is not just loving him over, they're literally loving over his family. Only thing they haven't done at this point is literally hosed his wife (I think?). That's probably the motivation to try to screw them over so hard.

like i don't disagree that sauber hosed over van der garde, that fact isn't up for he debate, and he clearly deserves any money he paid back plus damages. but trying to force his way into a race seat, assuming it's not a negotiating tactic, is beyond stupid.

What's likely to happen is that van der Garde will be offered a drive for three to five races with a possible extension based on performance. That's as little and as much as Sauber can get away with without breaking somebody's contract.

Sutil will be politely told to gently caress off, but they'll make him fourth permitted driver if he drops it.

Exactly. Contracts have to be upheld.
Last year Sauber took VDG's money for a drive this year but then turned around and told him to gently caress off instead.
It's a clear breach of contract and if they cannot pay him back the money with interest they have to let him drive.

Just been going through TLTIJA's post on rules changes, because I never pay attention in the off-season to all this poo poo and like to catch up just before the season gets underway.. this one delights me:

quote:

As in 2014 lapped drivers may ‘unlap’ themselves by passing the safety car. However, the safety car will now no longer need to wait until the lapped cars have regained the tail of the field before heading to pit lane.

..thank gently caress, Martin Brundle will be pleased... along with millions of viewers who cannot stomach the thought of him moaning about it every time the safety car comes out.
