The writing in the backer beta is solid, it's harder to judge at a higher level because we only have a small slice, so it' simpossible to (for example) make comparisons with the overarching stories of PST or New Vegas. The main difference between the stuff in the BB and in prior Obsidian games is that it has more "adult themed" content -- not like porn, but topics like drug use, abortion, etc. are explicit in a way I haven't seen them addressed before in RPG's. I think it's because this is Obsidian's own license so they can finally tackle these topics without publisher interference. It's all done very well but I think overall this game is going to have a darker tone than prior Obsidian games just because the writers have been let off the leash a bit (and that's a good thing).

The only Obsidian game that I have ever finished is KotOR 2. I've played NWN vanilla until near the end but then I lost my save. NWN2 ran ok on my old AMD x2 system but it has run dreadfully on any newer Intel CPU that I've had, so I haven't bothered to replay it. Have not played any of the others - I don't have a console and I don't really like games made primarily for consoles.

That said, yes I think the writing I've seen is good - that's Obsidian's primary strength as a company so it should come as no surprise that, if anything, their games are enjoyable to read.

edit: The only thing I don't really like is that the player responses are often very, very dry and the writing for the PC voice sets is very rudimentary - as if they are afraid to imbue any personality in the writing in case someone will go "I didn't want my character to sound like that". Unfortunately the downside of doing that is that it can lead to bland responses. There's a sharp difference in the voice acting for the companions, which is much better than the PC voice sets IMO.

Writing is also not really my main focus in games. I play games for their primary resolution mechanic - which is usually either combat or objectives of some sort (like in Stronghold or Tropico). KotOR2 was one of the only games I've been able to finish where the combat in the game pretty much sucked, but the writing, 'environmental storytelling' and atmosphere was enough to keep me going. The 'cinematic dialogue' in the Mass Effect games was also better than the combat gameplay as well, IMO.

I hope the full game has a stupid scenario where your party is trapped in a cave with a bunch of random NPCs and there's limited water, and you have to decide how to distribute it.

That was typically how 2e D&D tried to explain the alignment system and I always thought it was funny.

Is it just me, or is the current beta build really, really good compared to the previous few? I've been complaining about and not enjoying engagement for several builds, but in today's I only had one issue with it over a 2 hour session (my fighter took a step to attack a target that I thought was in range). I can't explain what changed, but now the combat is clicking for me. I was destroying beetle packs all the way to the spider caves; I died on the Ogre the first time I fought him (I don't remember the bears from my previous playthroughs), but on the next attempt I destroyed him and his dumb bears; I think the ogre was on his rear end for the first 80% of the fight.

At this point, combat feels very good to me.

I agree; seems like the systems, animations, UI, all of the 'stuff' is finally coming together into what looks like a playable and, more importantly, sellable, game.

Monk kicks a lot of rear end if you pump might, you just atatatata your way to victory.

Do we know what classes won't have companions to fill the slot in the final game? Would be nice to figure out what my dude is gonna be, finally.

Honestly the combat does feel markedly improved, or at least there's none of the confusion that was rife in the beginnings of the beta and lingered through its most recent iteration. It feels very coherent and the pace of combat must have been tweaked. It's good

The game feels so much easier to understand in this build. It's like night and day for me; I never felt overwhelmed or unable to control the battle at any point (except for the first time with the bears). I haven't tried Hard yet, but normal feels easier in this build than easy was for the last two.

Ropekid, were changes to the min/max zoom made, or were my console commands from a few weeks back carried into the new build? Either way, this game is shaping up very well and I'm very glad you folks were able to do this kickstarter.

Loving the patch notes, will try the new build today. Especially interested in the Dex/Recovery Speed fix.

Now the ONLY thing I will miss is that you can have the same shield present in two weapons sets at once. I'd like to switch between a Pike and a Sword but keep the same shield, and that's not possible today (not unless you drag & drop the shield from the inventory screen).

Stone Beetles appear to be doing quite a bit less damage (?) although Adra Beetles still hit like a piledriver, with 90-100 damage crits on their Shocking Blast AoE.

Arbalests and Arquebuses got nerfed through the roof to the v364 version where they only did 30-40 damage and have no DR reduction ... contrast to Pistols which are only a bit slower and bypass 6 DR.

You can use a Paladin as a tank since they don't usually have a stack of actives. Pump those Deflection attributes and Intellect for the AoE size increase. Whack them in the heaviest armor with a shield and maybe grab the Cautious attack talent - send them in first and try and get as many enemies to attack them as possible. Grab anything that boosts defenses. I wouldn't necessarily say use a Large Shield because they reduce your accuracy too much, a small shield with Sword and Shield style will probably be fine.

That's the build I was using at first but the more I look at the Paladin skill list the less I'm sure that the modal AoE really justifies heavy investment in Intelligence. Even fully pumped up you're only looking at like a five or six meter radius at most, and most of the best Paladin abilities aren't AoE and don't have durations influenced by Intelligence.

It's also hard to decide whether Perception or Resolve should get more of a boost or if I should just split the difference; Constitution seems a decent choice too; I hate leaving Might un-buffed on any character.

I didn't say max it and I agree that the aura might be a bit small.

I haven't built a Paladin without a Zealous Aura, but they're basically a support class. In the last build you could do some serious alpha striking with Flames of Devotion and an Arquebus, but they nerfed Arquebuses again.

Currently they're probably one of my least favourite classes. I think Chanters are a lot stronger.

The paladin has many abilities that are influenced with int. Especially order specific talents adds many duration/area effects to abilities. influenced abilites are:

Zealous auras
Inspiring Triumph
Liberating Exhortation additional effects with Inspiring Liberation or Bond of Duty
Reinforcing Exhortation

Right, but

1) The auras have such a small area of effect that your marginal return on investment with intellect isn't much. Either way, you're probably going to be buffing only one or two additional party members with your aura most of the time anyway.

2) Liberating and Hastening exhortation I'll grant.

3) Reviving exhortation, once they're up again they're up again, and presumably you're tossing them a heal anyway -- is the extra stamina lasting a little while longer really worthwhile?

4) Deprive the Unworthy ok, but you're probably going to take Reviving Exhortation at that level.

Basically, looking at the list of Paladin abilities, it seems like the optimal build is either Endurance or Focus auras at 3rd, then Liberating Exhortation at 5th level, Reviving Exhortation at 7th level, Hastening Exhortation at 9th level, and past that you've completed the game's critical path anyway or have over-levelled it so further choices probably don't matter *that* much. And if you take that ability list, then you aren't going to gain all that much from high Int. Maybe a few points make sense, but not maxing it out.

Not saying you couldn't build a smart paladin that worked, just that it seems the non-standard route / not optimal play, because most paladin abilities are either single-target or gain only minimally from added intelligence. Meanwhile, the few that do so benefit compete for slots with other class abilities that don't benefit from intelligence significantly (like, say, Sworn Enemy, which just lasts until the enemy drops it seems like).

Seems like the "optimal" paladin build is probably something like 14 Con, 14 Int, 15 Per 15 Res. Maybe 12 Might, 13 Con, 13 Int, 15 Per 15 Res.
