So what makes this case different than McLaren taking Sergio Perez' Carlos Slim money and then telling him to gently caress off a year later. Specific contract details for VdG and not Perez?

I don't know the specifics of Perez's case, but the smaller teams tend to agree sponsorship deals annually, so perhaps he'd only paid for 1 year?

Perez actually got to race. And McLaren would've been in a position to refund his money if it was a multi year contract. I think that's the main difference here.

Wait, is VdG suing because he paid for a contract for 2015 that wasn't upheld? Or is he suing about being sacked after the end of a previous year?

He's supposed to have a 2015 contract that isn't being upheld. The court has ruled he should be racing at this race.

Given his motivation Sauber almost certainly took a load of money then told him to gently caress off. I think they tried this with Silvestro, but her management were sharper.

Edit: Can't see Kaltenborn lasting the month. Her tenure has not been good.

He paid upfront to race this season, they spent his money then reeled the punter in.

Oh this makes sense

Though VdG was suing over some routine end-of-season termination.

Hello, Carol? It’s Alan. How are you? Me? I’m having a fantastic time, yeah. I’m having the best time since… sliced bread.

How’s Mr. Planet of the Apes man? Oh. Is he still driving that Renault Megane?

Yeah, can I just read you something from Top Gear magazine? No, it’s alright, I’ve got it here, I’ve got it here.

"With a mere ninety brake-horse-power available, progress is too leisurely to be called fast, but on the motorway in fifth gear the Megane’s slow pace really becomes a pain. Uphill runs become power-sappingly mundane, while overtaking National Express coaches can become a long, drawn-out affair.”

Not my words, Carol. The words of Top Gear magazine. Hello?

They can have 4 in a season, right? I think. One of the failing teams ran into that problem last year, Marussia maybe.

As I understand it, she pushed Sauber for the test days in exchange for the sponsorship $ from Nuclear Clean Air Energy, which they agreed to. They also (her Sponsors, that is) wanted a race deal, and that was the sticking point. Kaltenborn's words were typical F1:

quote:

"We had to make a certain call; we did that, and I still would like to support her whatever way I can," Kaltenborn added.

"For that reason I said 'let's give it time and wait and see what we can do'.

"I don't know if we can do something for her, but I think it's worthwhile to take that time out and at least evaluate different options.

"I think a lot depends on her management, where they stand and what their plans are."

I think the last line is the clue. It was money.

It may be true to say they didn't have enough for what Sauber wanted, but this all happened in the context of Sauber's driver disputes, and I don't think it's a reach to suggest what Di Silvestro's team wanted were more concrete guarantees of 2015 plans.

i just find it really, really hard to believe that simona can match the funding levels of bianchi/ferrari, nasr/banco do brasil, ericsson/shady backers, and van der garde/billionaire family. i love simona but they are all far more proven drivers with, at least in theory, much more money behind them.

ALSO, here's some comedy we've all forgotten about : in 2007 van der garde signed a contract to be super aguri's test driver, then reneged on it and signed with spyker. so he's not, in fact, a beautifully innocent angel

Could be something specific in the contract allowing for performance-related termination, or they could have just bought him out. Ferrari reportedly paid Raikkonen a shitload of money to gently caress off so they could bring in Alonso.

The problem for Sauber is that apparently they can't afford to buy out VDG.
