here have some dog pictures here is my new dog, we came home from the shelter today. she's about 2 and a half. when she arrived at the shelter she was very skinny and had "too many fully engorged ticks to count" but now she's here with me getting food and pets and other things every dogge needs

Real talk, if you have a humane society or some other sort of animal shelter near you start volunteering. Working the adoption desk for a few hours every weekend is one of the high points of my week. I love sending cattes and dogges home

Did you have to do training or was it pretty much just a couple hours OJT and you're on your own? Have to pay for a background check?

Nostalgia4Dicks posted:Did you have to do training or was it pretty much just a couple hours OJT and you're on your own? It depends on the organization. I did a 2 hour orientation one Saturday and filled out some paperwork. Most nonprofits will take care of any background check costs -- if they want you to pay money to volunteer I'd consider that a red flag. Aside from that it's been OJT. There's always some staff around if I have any questions or want to pass off an annoying client.

there's an SPCA around here. i took monty to the dogge park today and its right down the street from it. only a couple of minutes from my house. i would probably only be able to spare a saturday or a sunday for like 6 hours a week total but i'm totally gonna check in on it.

I'd like you all to meet Freya This her on the car ride home 28 days ago In that short time she's gone from this size (17 lbs in this pic) to this size (33.8 lbs) In case you couldn't guess she's a Rottweiler. She's the sweetest Rottweiler I or my family has ever owned and we've never owned a poorly tempered Rottweiler. She's also a tremendous coward. When someone knocks on the door she valiantly defends our home from the back bedroom, under the bed. The only thing she's aggressive about is blankets and even this is cute. See the evidence below. We have several neighbors with Great Danes and now that Freya's shots are all finished we're trying to set up some play dates with them to see how she reacts to them. She currently tries to wear my wife's Boston Terrier as a hat or tries to step on her. The Boston responds to this attention by playing tug of war with Freya's face, which Freya seems to think is the greatest game ever.

Or at least mine does, but I figure thats pretty standard. They want a 3 month commitment though,. I do stress busting at mine, which is just going and playing with pups for about a half an hour. It's very fun.

This rear end in a top hat flew all the way from New York to Hawaii and all he wants to do is sleep. Which is actually what he did in New York anyway so it was kinda expected. This is one well traveled dog. Picked up in Texas, Adopted by us in Colorado. Drove with us to Florida. Drove with us up the east coast to New York and now Hawaii. All his bitches be jealous.

I used to volunteer out there. It's awesome. Just show up and take dogs for walks. The big dogs especially need some love because a lot of the volunteers are afraid to.

I'll be moving to a new apartment, soon. This being New Zealand, it's got a big ol' yard and trees and junk, so I've made a decision to pop down to the SPCA and get me a dog. Dunno what I'll select, family has two tried and true methods: 1) Go for the saddest, unhappiest looking dog (That got us a corgi/schnauzer cross, a happy little guy before cancer took him) 2) Go for the dog that's closest to, well, being written off. (See above) Thoughts?

Both 1 and 2. That way you either get the dogge that needs love the most, or you get two dogges. Win win.
