There are some things that are OK in .NET dev land [live.com, "Sent from my Windows Phone"] that aren't in the rest of the country.

I would actually argue, Microsoft apologist tendencies aside, that Outlook.com [current iteration of hotmail / live.com] is arguably the best of the webmail services out there in terms of features and experience presuming your main focus is email. At worst I'd call it a pretty close 2nd to gmail.

JOB POSTING
We've had some attrition for personal reasons within our already-small team at my company, so we're switching from passive recruiting to more active recruiting

Who are we?
Small startup that has closed a decent-sized round of Series A funding already (so we're not that new at this point), we've got a number of possible pivot points in the retail and fueling industries but for now our main selling platform is mobile integration with fueling and convenience stores (can't get into too much more detail here unfortunately). This is actually our founder's second startup, he was with his first one for over a decade before it was acquired.

Where are we?
Houston, TX , specifically the Westchase area (no remote, sorry)

What are we looking for?
C#/.NET developers, any experience level really. We've also got mobile apps on iOS , Android, and Windows Phone (yes, seriously), and some web-facing assets, but the bulk of our stuff is C#/.NET bits running either in the cloud (Azure) or on an appliance. Experience with any of those platforms is a plus, but not a must. If you have experience in the consumer retail or fueling industry, that's a mega-plus.

Mainly we need someone who's not married to "just web" or "just X" or anything and is interested in building cool stuff. We use frameworks where they make sense of course, but a lot of what we've built is pretty customized so there'll be a fair amount of learn-as-you-go. If you're not interested in learning I'd say this is not for you.

How do I apply?
PM me, or if you don't have PMs or prefer email then ddipaolo at that gmail thing

What else?
Remember that this is a startup so many of the traditional caveats apply. We're still pursuing a fair number of different opportunities so we could (and sometimes do) shift focus rapidly. There are occasional delivery crunches. You do get equity but it's already diluted since we're further along (though our salaries aren't depressed to compensate or anything). All that said, I like the core team we have in place and genuinely enjoy working with them. We're fairly meritocratic so if you build something cool or come up with a good way of doing something, it goes. Egos are generally low, which is very nice.

Second Link above.
Unfortunately they like referrals to be more about vouching for skills. That makes it hard to for me to give them out to people over the internet, but let me know if you apply. Maybe there is something I can do.

Why?
Fastcompany says we are the most innovative media company whatever that means. We have cool initiatives with apple and amazon going on. Very much a culture of experimentation right now.

WyzAnt Tutoring is hiring Front-End and .Net developers

Who are we?
WyzAnt (pronounced "Wise Ant") is an online marketplace connecting students and tutors across the US and providing practice management tools for tutors. We've been around (and profitable) for over 9 years and are growing. http://www.wyzant.com/about/careers

Where are we?
We're headquartered in Chicago's Wicker Park/Bucktown neighborhood, and have a satellite office in San Francisco. All but 2 of our devs are in Chicago, and we're open to people working remotely, though they would have to travel to our Chicago location regularly and probably spend the first month or so in Chicago for onboarding.

Who are we looking for?
Front-end developers as well as mid & senior .Net developers, mostly. A degree isn't necessary (though it won't hurt) - we're more interested in experience, expertise and fit.

Why work with us?
Starting with the tangibles: We pay above industry average, we have ridiculously amazing health insurance and subsidize partners/families, 401k matching, stock options, an open vacation/time off policy (take what you need, just don't be an rear end about it), paid maternity/paternity leave, and a nice office space along with snacks, subsidized lunch, and that kind of stuff.

Intangibles: We take an incredibly sane approach to work/life balance - in the 2 years I've been here, I've probably only worked more than 8-9 hours/day a handful of times, and it's never been some ridiculous crunch mode situation. I don't think I've come in on a weekend ever. Devs have a very large amount of say in what's possible and what's reasonable as far as timing and pacing goes. We work hard but we recognize that killing yourself to meet an arbitrary deadline isn't sustainable. Our dev team is very collaborative and we don't put up with ego - doesn't matter how senior or junior you are, a good idea will be listened to. We're also all about learning and growing as devs - a few of our newer members have remarked that they've never worked on a team where people are as friendly and helpful as we are, so I guess that's uncommon.

Basically, if you're a hard-working nerd who is willing to constantly challenge themselves to grow but doesn't want to be used and burnt out, you should talk to us.

Apply?

Job Seeker

Location: Orange Park, Florida

Area of Expertise: Full stack .NET programming.

Education: An AA and most of a BSc. I got a job before I graduated. Ask about the story sometime!

Experience: Over 2 years of .NET full stack development, be it desktop stuff with WPF or MVC with or without knockout. I've also done plenty of web forms when I was working in maintenance roles. I've done everything from regular ole web dev, to SQL janitoring, to CSS nazi, to twitter boostrap surgeon, to console app monkey, and everything inbetween. I've debugged remotely and locally, I've configured (with varying degrees of coercion) IIS to work with new and old pages and web apps, and I also remember CS fundamentals like what a stack frame and a linker is. Algorithms and data structures aren't just buzzwords from CTCI, either. I regularly tutor people for side cash and to meet new people, and help co workers as often as I can. I had to teach git to my boss at one job, and have done "lunch n learns" about how to use git, among other things.

I've done agile, I've worked completely independently, I've released my own stuff and had to go through code reviews and dev/uat/qa builds before formal pushes. The only thing I haven't done on the job is bust out a memory profiler, write system software, or lead a team - yet.

Looking for: A software development job with benefits and a nice work/life balance. I'm also getting serious about getting into configuration management/continuous integration, and would love to take on that responsibility. As far as location, somewhere to put down some roots - big cities with good metro areas - are ideal.

What we need: Junior/level 1 systems admin

Who we are: A mid-sized automotive parts supplier

Where we are: Oklahoma City, OK

The job: Are you shiny and new out of school? A salty desktop tech looking to move into more admin responsibilities, or a phone jockey with some experience looking to get off the phones? Know how to do a little bit of everything, or want to learn? Comfortable with modern, virtual infrastructure and the oldest, grimiest convoluted industrial poo poo you may have ever seen? Want to be reasonably self-directed and tackle stuff that interests you if you can make a vague business case for why we should care? If you answered "yes!" or even "ehh...maybe?" to any of the above questions, then you might want to shoot me a PM.

Responsibilities: The only hard and fast responsibility is taking over the support and maintenance of the PCs that run some specialized industrial equipment. This stuff is typically old, full of arcane equipment from vendors you've never heard of and cranky. Everything else is a mixture of what the day brings and what interests you. We've got more needs than we have hands, and there's always something to do. Somewhat frequently, that something is interesting, too.

Pros
-If you're self directed, we'll wind you up and let you go.
-Our infrastructure is alright(For a company our size), and getting better.
-We are somewhat flexible on work hours.
-A pretty chill team.
-There are some fun projects on the horizon(DR environment to set up, new storage/new VM hosts, maybe VDI next year).

Cons
-The old industrial equipment that will be yours sucks. Full stop. You will not be alone in working on it(We all help), but the care, feeding and documentation will be yours.
-The company was mismanaged for a very long time and has a lot of institutional problems. One of which is a lovely culture.
-A past "If it isn't broke, don't fix it" attitude that is causing us lots of problems now. Lots of EoL software and OSes that are intricately linked to business process and take lots of care to extract/upgrade. We also have almost no documentation on most of the old stuff.
-It can be dirty work. We're an industrial organization. The offices are clean, but everything else is covered in lubricants and grime.
-We have the tiniest, worst desks I've ever seen.

I have no interest in sugar coating this place. We have a lot of problems, but at least the really nasty IT ones have mostly been handled. We're just working through them one day at a time. If you come in expecting a nice, west-coast startup office will laid back hipsters, the latest kit everywhere and lots of perks, you'll quit within a week. That being said, if you want a light managerial hand, or to cut your chops on things that might otherwise be above your paygrade or outside your silo, then this might be for you.

Pay is negotiable to an extent, though I don't know what the range is. If you're interested, PM me or email intoxicated.wookie at gmail

JOB POSTING
Seeking two candidates: A Linux sysadmin and a DBA. Both of these are Operations roles supporting a public service. You will not be doing traditional Enterprise IT.

Who are we?
Photobucket, a photo hosting, sharing and printing company. We're a mid-size web company, serving upwards of 1 billion image requests per day and maintaining several petabytes of storage. We're also in the middle of seriously revamping our product offerings, application code and infrastructure. Our Operations team is working to migrate from a legacy, bare-metal build to an OpenStack private cloud managed by SaltStack. We work closely with our in-house developers daily to make sure everyone is on the same page and has what they need. There is a lot of change and redesign going on, and you would be in a position to contribute ideas and implementations from day one. If you're interested in DevOps, we're fully on board with the philosophy.

Where are we?
Denver, CO (we are very open to part-time telecommute, but are not able to do full-time remote. Yes, if anyone's reading my post history I've said that I wish more companies would allow it. Sorry, decision above my pay grade).

What are we looking for?
We're hiring for a sysadmin with strong Linux administration skills and comfort writing small to medium-size scripts (in any language, though we mostly write Python). That and a desire to always keep learning are the only hard requirements. Experience with supporting large scale web applications, virtualization and cloud computing, basic layer 2/3 networking, config management (again, any vendor), and working with developers are all strong plusses. For what it's worth, you'd be reporting to me.

We're also seeking a DBA. Our environment is heavy on MySQL, but experience with any popular database tech is fine with us. We're also big users of ElasticSearch and Hadoop. The DBA team works closely with my system and network engineers, as well as developers and business leaders to make sure everyone has the information they need when they need it.

Both positions participate in on-call rotations. Read: you are not on-call 24/7.

How do I apply?
PM me, or if you don't have PMs or prefer email then jhenry82 at google mail

What else?
Photobucket has been around for a while, but still has a very relaxed, "startup" feel to the work environment. That means we're not burdened by excessive bureaucracy or politics, and we aren't afraid to goof off from time to time. It does NOT mean that we're a bunch of "brogrammers" or that you'll be expected to work insane hours for crap pay. It's a fun, respectful workplace. We offer a pretty standard benefit package, including stock options.

I always though that was something they put in the job posting to warn you your job was going to be tedious, not something they're actually looking for.

I always thought it was a trigger to make whoever was reviewing the resume check for more typos, inconsistencies, and grammatical errors.

Want to work with multiple goons? Are you a huge nerd (and hopefully in the Seattle area)? Want to work in the illustrious field of computer gaming? (Not really, it's a SAAS company.)

The startup I work at is hiring for a whole bunch of positions right now: https://playfab.com/jobs

Personal experience says it's a pretty chill startup - no 18 hour days, no kegerator, no brogramming. It's still small enough that there's a lot of technical creative freedom without process or politics getting in your way.

The job I'm most interested in helping fill is this one:

When: ASAP.
Remote?: No full-time remote, but working from home is ok if you need to.

DevOps Engineer
at PlayFab, Inc.
Seattle

PlayFab is looking for a DevOps engineer to operate, automate and scale the infrastructure that powers our live game operations platform.

You will be working as part of our engineering team to build and maintain our operations framework using modern, open-source software and processes. The type of person we’re looking for believes they can automate everything. You have the ability to make an application scalable, consistent, and reliable in a cloud environment. You can work as part of a software development organization and build tools that enable your colleagues to more rapidly produce better software and services. You have no desire to be woken up at 3am to respond to an incident, and have the skills to make sure that problems can solve themselves so that doesn't happen.

Our main business proposition is reliability and scalability. This role is critical because our customers trust us to run their backend, and they know we can do it better, faster, and cheaper than they could do it themselves. Our business depends on maintaining that trust.

Specific Duties and Responsibilities:
Engineer and maintain the infrastructure that runs all the PlayFab services.
Build automation and tools to support developers deploying, running, and monitoring individual PlayFab services.
Build data sources and tools to expose game-specific performance and reliability data to customers who use the PlayFab platform.
Create and champion best practices for building scalable, reliable services.
Conduct root cause analysis on production issues with other engineers.
Participate in a 24x7 on-call rotation, currently 1 week on, ~6 weeks off.

Experience and Qualifications
3+ years of relevant IT operations and software development experience.
Previously operated a reliable platform delivering a 24x7 service.
Ability to learn new technologies quickly and apply the knowledge immediately.
Demonstrated ability to deliver high-quality finished projects under tight deadlines.
Windows and/or Linux systems administration including solid Python and/or PowerShell scripting experience.
Experience deploying, monitoring, and maintaining cloud-based services on a platform like AWS, Azure, or GCE.
Experience with configuration management software like SaltStack, Chef, Ansible or Puppet.
Experience with log and performance collection software like LogStash, ElasticSearch, Graphite, InfluxDB, or OpenTSDB.
A positive, collaborative, and professional attitude.

There's no real mention of exactly what programming experience is required for this role, would I be at a disadvantage if I don't really have any programming/development experience?

Currently I'm coming from a background of a more traditional Operations team that runs MMO's for a publishing company that shall remain nameless. I've got Puppet experience and have written a few modules for my own needs, but that's about the extent of my DevOps background (aside from the more traditional script writing).

Want to work for Relic Entertainment? Yes, the Relic of Homeworld, Dawn of War and highest-rated-RTS-of-all-time Company of Heroes? Never thought you'd have that opportunity because you are just a web developer that hasn't seen a C++ compiler since school? Well have I got something for you:

What:
Web Developer - primarily JavaScript.

Where: Vancouver, BC

Remote? No - but there is relocation support if you are a great fit.

Why:
This is a great studio to work in with a lot of history behind it and an impressive legacy to live up to. It's also easily the best work environment I've ever been in. There is a very high level of skill and competence all around and a lot of very interesting and talented people to work with. You are never just handed work from above and forced to work around what you know for sure are bad decisions - everyone is part of the design process and you will always be trusted to know what's best for your particular area of expertise.

You just really get the sense that everyone cares, everyone is involved, everyone is primarily concerned with pushing out a quality product they can be proud of.

There are also no crazy work hours or mandated crunch-time - you decide if what is asked of you is reasonable or not, and if you say it can't be done by some given deadline the project will be reworked until everyone is satisfied that it's a realistic and reliable plan.

I really can't recommend this place enough - I am very happy working here :)

Who:
Please have:
  • 3+ years of web development experience
  • Strong JavaScript, HTML and CSS skills
  • Strong communications skills, be able to work in a team, be able to write clear and concise emails yada yada (i.e. be a reasonable human being with a balanced life and people skills) .
  • CS degree or equivalent experience

Nice-to-have / things that will help your chances:
  • Any C++, Java, PHP or Python
  • Experience with Drupal or Vanilla Forums
  • Experience managing AWS
  • Background in graphic design and/or UI design
  • Previous experience in the gaming industry
  • You are actually "into" gaming

Our helpdesk guy is likely on the way out. HR gave me the go-ahead to send in resumes of people I know that are on the market and reliable.

Who we are: A logistics company. Specifically, produce truckload matchmakers - an office full of folks who do nothing but call truckers and get them to take loads of produce from point A to point B.
Where we are: Northern NJ, just a minute or two off of Route 3 on 17 North.

---

Job title: Help desk analyst
What we want: A basic help desk role, this is a good place for someone's 2nd or 3rd job. We're a VDI environment, heavily locked-down, so an understanding of Windows desktop applications, a little Word/Excel, is good to have. We're fully into Chrome and Gmail, Citrix Xendesktop 7, and a lot of line-of-business apps. We'll train you on what you need to know for them since it's unlikely you've encountered them outside of the logistics industry. Document scanning/indexing application understanding is a big plus. We run outsourced VoIP so a basic understanding of VoIP principles is a plus as well. Printers, knowing how to handle extremely non-technical (but very nice and friendly) users, and knowing how to keep your tickets updated and moving onward are must-haves. Gotta be able to wrangle vendors since we do a lot of work with third-party support for applications.

As long as you're a good balance of technical and service skills (the incumbent is wonderful at service but lousy at tech) you'll do great.

---

Why you'd want to work here: The company has a very laid-back, easygoing culture. We're not shorts and sandals, but nobody's going to give you crap if you wear jeans on a non-Friday. There is VERY low turnover and people are very keen on growing from within the company. The IT department would be the applicant, me (sysadmin) and my boss (IT manager) who is trying to delegate more and more responsibilities so he can get to a better managerial situation. You'll have good communication across the board, no backstabbery, realistic expectations, hourly pay, 15 PTO days, decent benefits, and since we deal in produce, occasionally we might get a trucker with a load of produce that the client didn't want anymore so you can take home a box of avocados or mozzarella sticks. There is a companywide bonus opportunity. If you want to move upwards I am happy to mentor in the stuff I do (MCSA/VCP level) and I am more than happy to share any knowledge you want to learn which I could help with. The role is non-exempt so you are eligible for OT if there's a reasonable need for it, or to make up time if you have an appointment during the day.

Why you wouldn't want to work here: IT is very much a cost center and we don't get to spend a lot of money outside of vital infrastructure stuff. On-call is once every three weeks since there's only three of us. Working remote isn't really an option. Salary will be within market rate and depend on your experience. The bonus depends on companywide quotas and has no metric for IT, so if the business doesn't sell X amount of truckloads we only get Y% of the bonus. Merit increases are probably not on the table, and there's no word about a cost of living increase. There are three or four extremely high-visibility users out of the entire company of 70, and sometimes it's a bit disproportionate.

Salary: DOE, realistically probably in the mid to high 40k range. I think the company compromised on quality to get our current guy in at a lower salary, and he didn't pan out, so I can make a real case to bring in someone skilled.

PM me for info.
