I think the new Sufjan album is one of his best, if not his best. With his recent work's focus on theming and complex, large-scale compositions, it's easy to forget that this guy is also a master at writing vocal melodies. His melodies here are as good as they've ever been, and the whole thing is much more impactful because rather than writing songs about seemingly arbitrary, external things (old stories, cities in illinois, places in michigan, the brooklyn queens expressway, etc), he's writing about deeply personal experiences and you can feel the result.

I went to their show the following night in KC. I have no qualms admitting that TVOTR is probably my favorite band. I had seen them live only once before — nearly eight years ago to the date, also in KC, and remember having a great time, but ... well, it's been eight years.

I had mixed feelings about this show. The setlist included some stuff I was particularly glad to hear ("DLZ," "Million Miles") but it was a pretty by-the-numbers performance. To be fair, I was pretty tired, and the criticism that TVOTR's stuff doesn't fully translate into a live performance has been around since Cookie Mountain.

Yeah it's tremendous, and as someone who holds Illinois in really high esteem, I'm aligned with you in thinking C&L might supplant it atop the list someday.

I feel like that's something I won't know until at least a year from now but the potential feels real!

Everything I've heard about their live shows is that they're such precise, practiced musicians that their shows don't have any energy. They just play it all correctly and it sounds like it does on the album.

That's a fair assessment, yeah. Although there are certainly a few songs like "DLZ" that are a bit better live IMO.

As you say, I'm not going to be sure where it will rank for me for a long time. It's definitely my favorite of his in a long time, though.

I am not very moved by music generally. This has always been untrue when it comes to Sufjan and yet again I am blown away and left shaken listening to his new album. It swells inside me and makes me infinitely sad in the best ways.

Totally agree on what has been said about Carrie & Lowell so far. Age of Adz was good, but it was a lot, and didn't have as much emotional depth. with C&L it seems like he took everything he learned about vocal production from Adz but really went back to his roots instrumentally.

i've listened to it like 8 times in the past 2 days and every time i feel like my soul is cut in half. might even top Illinois if i'm being honest.

Its a bit of a shame that most of the rest of the album isn't as good as the first four previewed tracks, but overall I am really really liking it.

Death cab made a good album was a sentence I was starting to think I would never say again.

They are playing here with the Antlers so heres hoping the live show got good again.

Carrie and Lowell has exceeded whatever expectations I had. I just can't stop listening to it. As someone that's dealt with mental illness in a loved one it really hits close to home.

I'm also pleasantly surprised by the Death Cab album. After two listens I'd say that it's their best album since Plans.

Saw King Tuff and Father John Misty last night in Nashville. Second time seeing KT live, and while I did have fun it definitely showed they were the opener. I still had a ton of fun and they rocked out, especially seeing all the well-dressed FJM fans running for cover when the King Tuff fans started getting crazy and throwing beers. FJM was incredible as well, if only for his stage presence, the dude was a god damned lunatic up there given the kind of music he plays.

That's how it was for me as well the first couple listens. it actually took a bit of headphone listening to begin dissecting the individual songs and moments within them, but the more i unravel it the more i am enjoying it. i like sad music tho so your mileage may vary.

Oh they do, but I'll be honest, KT lend themselves better as headliners or just a more receptive crowd. The one they played at Marathon Music works in Nashville was huge compared to where we saw them headline back last October, with at least twice as many people there for them to play, but because it was mostly Father John Misty fans only a handful of the crowd actually got into it compared to the previous show I saw them at.

I'm going to that show in about 10 days, and yeah, I guess I get the pairing but it's probably not going to go over too well.

Then again, the last time I saw FJM, it was to a crowd of maybe 100 and his opener was his bass player, who was wearing a dress (I don't think he's part of his band anymore)

SiriusXMU gave the relatively new PC Music label a pretty high talking up during their SXSW coverage. Anyone checked out their stuff? It's mostly poppy/electronic music with samples you'd expect from a Venetian Snares album.

Yeah some Sub-Pop/WMG higher up probably thought the pairing would be doing KT a favor but I didn't see a ton of crossover potential while I was there.

In separate news I got tickets to see Toro Y Moi May 10th in Nashville. Anyone seen Chaz play live and can tell me if he's worth the $40 tickets?

In the right mindset (read: blood alcohol content) I'd see him again for maybe $15, but $40 seems absurd. The two tracks I've heard off his new album ("Empty Nesters," "Buffalo") don't have me looking forward to his new album, either. Chaz tries to sing more on both of them, and ... nah.

He is only 23$ in dallas. That seems expensive unless it's a really nice venue. At first I didn't like Toro y Moi but empty nesters has really grown on me. I wouldn't mind going but I am not sure which of my friends I could convince to go. I would also be going based off of one song so, a better look through their repertoire might help make that decision for me.
