I think the new Sufjan album is one of his best, if not his best. With his recent work's focus on theming and complex, large-scale compositions, it's easy to forget that this guy is also a master at writing vocal melodies. His melodies here are as good as they've ever been, and the whole thing is much more impactful because rather than writing songs about seemingly arbitrary, external things (old stories, cities in illinois, places in michigan, the brooklyn queens expressway, etc), he's writing about deeply personal experiences and you can feel the result.

Yeah it's tremendous, and as someone who holds Illinois in really high esteem, I'm aligned with you in thinking C&L might supplant it atop the list someday. I feel like that's something I won't know until at least a year from now but the potential feels real!

I am not very moved by music generally. This has always been untrue when it comes to Sufjan and yet again I am blown away and left shaken listening to his new album. It swells inside me and makes me infinitely sad in the best ways.

Totally agree on what has been said about Carrie & Lowell so far. Age of Adz was good, but it was a lot, and didn't have as much emotional depth. with C&L it seems like he took everything he learned about vocal production from Adz but really went back to his roots instrumentally. i've listened to it like 8 times in the past 2 days and every time i feel like my soul is cut in half. might even top Illinois if i'm being honest.

Carrie and Lowell has exceeded whatever expectations I had. I just can't stop listening to it. As someone that's dealt with mental illness in a loved one it really hits close to home. I'm also pleasantly surprised by the Death Cab album. After two listens I'd say that it's their best album since Plans.

as a very big Sufjan fan i don't know exactly where my expectations were going in to Carrie & Lowell, but i do know that they have been far exceeded. The record is gorgeous and if the last couple of weeks are any indication, it's grown on me every listen.

I don't know if the band has changed or I have, but I haven't been too into a Mountain Goats album since Life of the World to Come. The full band arrangements just don't do it for me and the songs just don't seem as memorable

Saw King Tuff and Father John Misty last night in Nashville. Second time seeing KT live, and while I did have fun it definitely showed they were the opener. I still had a ton of fun and they rocked out, especially seeing all the well-dressed FJM fans running for cover when the King Tuff fans started getting crazy and throwing beers. FJM was incredible as well, if only for his stage presence, the dude was a god damned lunatic up there given the kind of music he plays. Blurry photos inc:  Dude knows irony  Couldn't even begin to get close to the front of the stage with the shitload of people but I got a decent view

They are coming to Dallas but the show is in the middle of the week and I don't get enough sleep as it is. I'd loved to see that pair though. I feel like KT would do an awesome show.

That's how it was for me as well the first couple listens. it actually took a bit of headphone listening to begin dissecting the individual songs and moments within them, but the more i unravel it the more i am enjoying it. i like sad music tho so your mileage may vary.

I'm going to that show in about 10 days, and yeah, I guess I get the pairing but it's probably not going to go over too well. Then again, the last time I saw FJM, it was to a crowd of maybe 100 and his opener was his bass player, who was wearing a dress (I don't think he's part of his band anymore)

In the right mindset (read: blood alcohol content) I'd see him again for maybe $15, but $40 seems absurd. My favourite local Vancouver band Dear Rouge have finally released their first studio album! These guys have put out a number of singles in the last couple years since winning a huge local contest called the Peak Performance Project (https://www.thepeak.fm), and this album is so good and top notch.
