yeah this one actually has progressions that make sense and a riff that ties poo poo together, the Colors material is way too disorganized for me.

I was burned on them through the middle albums after being obsessed back when TSC/Alaska were out but the last album was really solid. They've always been incredible musicians but they seem to be coming into their own, finding their rhythm and focus much better. This sounds like the next logical progression with their weird Floyd/Queen influences and it slays my ears. Tommy's vocals keep getting so much better, he's dreamy.

Sometimes I forget that BtBaM are one of my favorite bands on Earth. I don't know if that's a knock on them or just says something about the sheer amount of music I've consumed since high school or both. But I'm always stoked for a new record and will hopefully make it out to the suburbs to see them.

Was never a big BtBaM fan, but during their big heyday I was much more into stuff like Doomriders and other more hardcore leaning things.

Alaska/Colors were peak BTBAM for me. Great Misdirect was ok but I couldn't get into the last album very much. They seemed more interested in out-BTBAMing themselves with more and more complex arrangements and technical parts that when I saw them last year playing the album all the way through it bored the pants off of me, and when they played a Colors song afterwards it was obvious how much better that felt to me.

Just had one of my periodic metal thread catch-ups and discovered a bunch of cool new bands. Thanks everyone who posts random stuff. Rest assured that even if no one responds I will eventually come along and listen to every single one. :)

So the new Psycroptic album is self-titled, which suggests... something? An attempt at development? It is mostly standard Psycroptic fare, but there are a couple of deviations.

This one is pretty thrashy:
(best bit starts at 2:20)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9cmpohwpqeY

This one is kinda Gojira-ish:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MCcCBxwf-oA

But as always the best bits are when the singer shuts up and the drums chill out a bit so we can get some awesomely creative guitar from Joe Haley. The guy has a totally unique style. Here's my favourite section of the album:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d2zAmVfAyJU&t=148s

I wish he would make a solo album with no vocals, fewer blast beats, and just loads of groovy riffs :allears:

Well thank you!

The rest of the guys do a "reunion" show every year or two, and keep saying they're writing new stuff, but I've been kind of out of the loop ever since I left the band.

Wormrot's drummer is in the throes of deep depression or something and won't talk to anyone in the band, so they're looking for a replacement or they will break up. If anyone lives in Singapore and plays drums, let them know

If you're going to be in Tokyo then just wander the club sections of Shibuya, k-cho, Shimokitazawa and Ike-bo and look for posters. Kabukicho is the best place IMHO for rock clubs/live houses but if you're going with you wife/family/whatever you might not want to go there since it's pretty Yakuza'd out and is wall to wall brothels, strip clubs, hand job parlors and maid cafes. Ikebukuro is my favorite part of Japan, it's sort of a more "real" part of Tokyo as hipster as that sounds. It's a shopping area but it's less plastic than Shibuya, it has a red light district but it's less touristy than Kabukicho. Shimokitazawa is the "music district" as designated by the tourist guides, there are a lot of good shows there and most importantly a lot of super niche clubs and performances. But really the important thing to remember about Tokyo is that it's super safe, like, way safer than any major American city past 1AM. You can get locked down by the trains but just remember that most McDonalds are 24/7 and you can basically grab coffee/tea in them and crash for a few hours until the train line starts again.

http://www.tokyogigguide.com/

Is the best place to look for stuff in English, most clubs that have websites are in partial English as well. Also remember if you're using google maps or something: almost all these clubs are below ground or on the second story. Usually they have a door man, but he also usually looks like an unshaven bum so YMMV.

Would Pollstar work?

The issue is that Tokyo has a loving huge local music scene since it's one of the largest cities on earth and Pollstar generally only lists big name acts headlining real venues. On any given night in Tokyo there will be between 25 and 200 shows spread across the districts I listed and sometimes more, most of them happen in Live Houses which are music themed bars that are usually located underground and can hold like a couple hundred people tops. They tend to be a bit pricey if you're used to US concert prices too, not hugely expensive but in the area of ~25 bucks and a lot of places are still strictly cash only. The bigger ones that are above ground are more theater sized but they generally have crowds that are more focused around popular music, so if you don't want to see pretty boy pop rock/metal or female fronted dance pop you probably won't find anything there since they are mainly targeted at the Shibuya party crowd of young rich women and the Japanese equivalent of a bro. And really you shouldn't see "real" bands in Japan because it's so loving expensive. Hawkwind are playing in Japan and tickets start at 90USD and that's pretty cheap. Especially when there are hundreds of awesome unknown unsigned bands who play the clubs every single weekend and so many of them are super cool. Basically Tokyo is rock n roll as gently caress right now and I really wan't to go back just to spend money every night bumming around Tokyo listening to awesome poo poo.

Not bad -- they really dialed down everything I hated about Coal -- but Soen's beating them at their own game these days. Not like that game is even fair when you've got Martin Lopez behind the kit.

Dude has, like, 110 albums, so I'm not surprised. Look up "Jordan", "Rising Sun", "Final Wars", "Escape from Inbred Mountain", "Lotus Island" and "King James".

I'm also going to suggest "Aunt Suzie" just because it's quite possibly the most beautiful thing I've ever heard in my life, even if it is on the lighter side.

Anyone who likes The Chasm should check out anything else Daniel Corchado is involved in. Acerus's debut album is great and apparently two new albums are coming out this year. Basically, the man himself doing heavy metal as a one-man show. Magnum Itiner Interius is good, too, although it's more ambient/doom and instrumental mostly. It's still good because he can't do any wrong but it's a little out there.
