Hello, it’s Kuvo, Minifoo, and topiKal. We’re hot on the heels of the Tipping 40s LP of the first Shenmue that we've been promising to follow up for the last 5 years or so! It’s probably about time that we get around to playing the second one, which of course continues the story of our favorite unintentional crank-calling, jacket-donning, stoic-in-a-bad-way Japanese teenager: Ryo Hazuki.

November, 1986:

At the beginning the first Shenmue, Ryo Hazuki’s dad unfortunately met his end in the same way as so many great men of his time: being beaten to death by some dick with a ponytail. This sets Ryo on a journey not only to avenge the death of his father, but to reclaim the stolen Dragon Mirror -- a family heirloom with many secrets surrounding it, including why it is called the “Dragon Mirror” when it is really more of a small dinner plate.

Knowing only the name of his father’s assailant -- Lan Di -- Ryo applies his own unshakable will toward finding the man’s origin between solo rounds of darts and feeding stray kittens. With the help of what may or may not be his girlfriend, a dancing hot dog salesman, and a complete idiot named Goro, Ryo manages to learn that Lan Di is part of a criminal organization called the Chi You Men which is based in China. He also finds that the Dragon Mirror is only half of a two piece set which his dad must have purchased from QVC and hidden under their house in shame.

Armed with the Phoenix Mirror and some professional martial arts training from a guy named Master Chen, Ryo heads to Hong Kong to learn more about the Chi You Men and presumably find more arcade games to play.

I’m Ryo Hazuki.

If we were to describe Ryo in one word, it would probably be “remote.” We say this not so much because he is detached, but moreso because he seems like a robot being controlled by an alien with no human emotions. To his credit, he is pretty good at gathering information for someone with no personality. His long journey from Japan has brought him in contact with many different types of people, most of whom seem to regard him warmly. They probably think he is a bit… touched. His primary hobbies include collecting gumball machine toys and ringing his friends on the telephone only to act like they called him. Oh by the way, ladies: this time he’s single.

Joy

We know very little about Joy so far, aside from her constant habit of showing up to deliver non-messages and her complete disregard for motor vehicle laws. She’s real cool because she rides a bike and her hair is dyed. Her bucking of social norms is very anti-establishment. She seems to want Ryo's dick but he's too much of a goon to notice.

Delin

Moving every crate
I think we make a great pair
My life's true purpose

Jimenez Garcia

Titles:
-IWAS World Light Heavyweight Championship (1984, 1985)
-NWA World Heavyweight Championship (1985)
-NJPW Heavyweight Championship (1986)
-IWGP Intercontinental Championship (1986, 1987 current)

Named by Super Luchas magazine "Most likely to stain the mats with blood" 5 years running

Jianmin Tao

A resident of the South Carmain Qr., Jianmin is often seen in Lotus Park practicing Wing Chun. He's seen there at almost all hours so it's a bit of a mystery as to what he does when hes not doing Aikido. At age 75, he's an accomplished martial artists who will answers any question for Ryo, provided they he wrestle with him first.

Xiuying Hong

Ryo's long lost twin sister. Well not really, but they both are stoic, have a hard time holding a conversation, and like kung fu. Xiuying was nice enough to let Ryo crash at her studio apartment to save money so she's cool in our book. Speaking of books she has a huge library that apparently needs a dehumidifier. Check our her GoFundMe. Also goes by the name Li Shao Tao.

Hanhui Liu

The most experienced fighter around. The undefeated of the east, west, south, north and center. May or may not crush you. Not actually Li Shao Tao.

Fangmei Xun

Former orphan taken in by Xiuying. She now works as her assistant and is a bit of an airhead. She seems to have a crush on Ryo for God knows whatever reason. Looks like a cat

Izumi Takano

Assistant manager of the Tomato Convenience Store by day. Fight Club participant and Kung Fu master by night. Duck racing aficionado. Desperate to get in Ryo's pants

Is this going to be like the first games LP where you sucked at every fight, paid no attention to the game, got drunk and yelled and even passed out in a few episodes?
I can't recall the events you're talking about.

How often are you going to release video?
Whenever I remember to.

Can you upload a version without you guys talking over everything?
No.

I don't understand whats going on in the most recent video!
It's ok, neither do we.

Depends on how much you like T40s banter. Shenmue is a pretty dull game to watch so the enjoyment comes from hearing them drunkenly ramble about all kinds of inane poo poo while perfecting their darts skills.

I just want to take a moment to appreciate how everyone is going to know EXACTLY who you're referring to, despite the character supposedly being 100% American. Good lord Shenmue 1 was the perfect kind of trainwreck, and I hope Shenmue 2 lives up to it.

So far it looks like literally the exact same game, so I'm optimistic

The Shenmue 1 LP was great for background chatter because as much as I loved Shenmue, its pacing makes it really hard to watch. If you're blind, you end up stumbling around for a long time, only to finally find the next storyline bread-crumb which says "come back in 24 hours" with no means of fast-travel or skipping time (which #2 *does* have).

Not only a playable stretch. The entire second game was supposed to just be the boat journey, in which Smeagol guy survives the final fight with Ryo and sneaks onto the ship for revenge. Hong Kong was gonna be Shenmue 3.

The 360 emulation works okay-ish. The graphics look nicer in higher res, but at least the PAL version has issues with music and, most importantly, the arcade games.

Originally 16 total chapters, actually. But during a more recent (2010) press conference, for a social Shenmue game for phones, Shenmue City, that the story will consist of 11 chapters.

So basically, this game wraps up right in the middle of the story with a major cliffhanger.
