The server room at my new place is a good size but there's way too much old crap in there. I just had 8 old UPS units picked up for recycling that were left behind by the prior tenant. And what did I find once that stack of junk was removed? Powered up, plugged into nothing for god knows how long. All the prior tenant's telco stuff was left behind, including a Definity system with all the cards still in place. That's coming off the wall this weekend and then I can put a storage unit there. After that I can go through all the cabinets and drawers with the office manager and clean out the flotsam and jetsam and organize whatever's left.

Holy poo poo. I'm old enough to have used dial-up modems plenty, but that is the biggest one I've ever seen.

I had my 2014 review today and got a 19% raise which is unheard of in this company. I guess bringing a circa 2004 company into TYOL 2015 turned some heads because we don't have systems failing on a daily basis anymore.

Anyone used Towerstream? They're offering me 100/100 for $699 a month, compared to the $1k we're paying Telepacific for a 10 meg line. I don't have any experience with microwave.

Today I actually did some poo poo. All phone poo poo, but at least I wasn't just escalating every single call. On the down side, I found out that scripts are disabled on my PC. So much for my auto-refreshing ticket window plan.

Crosspost from poo poo that pisses you off thread.. So Firefox 37(and up) disable TLS1.0 by default. In managed hosting there are still in the wild many many application delivery devices(load balancers) that do not support TLS1.2 when performing SSL offoading. This is gonna be so much fun when the majority of the public start reporting they can't connect to https://www.ferretsweaters.com after they update FF and our customers start putting in tickets with their hair on fire that their site no longer works for their users. OTOH, here come the load balancer upgrade maintenances and increased billing for newer/more powerful/flexible devices!! These configs must be replicated manually since it's usually cross vendor upgrade paths.

I was going to say shoot me an email, but I'm 135 miles from there and it would be a 2-1/2 hour drive. In other news, every loving person on the Messaging team has received multiple emails and calls from a headhunting company trying to fill an Exchange Engineer position in Columbus. Considering they were only offering around $25/hr I think I've figured out why they're having problems with people laughing at them or just hanging up.

Well that was fun while it lasted. Turns out her google-fu is pretty strong and they don't have a presence at all around here so she called my bluff. Also I couldn't keep a straight face, particularly when I told her one of the benefits is a "personal bunny" which is basically just a secretary in a bunny outfit.

Minor victory! I was promoted to team lead on a trial basis a long rear end time ago. At the time I really had minimal leadership experience and wasn't even sure if I'd like it, so both sides were OK with taking it slow before making anything official. It ended up going great, but of course, the "trial period" stretched on and on and I never got a pay raise or actual title change. Brought this up with my boss a month or two back. ~12% raise finally came through today, backdated to that conversation. Feels good man. I only wish I had done it sooner Tab8715 posted:People still buy porn? A guy I know on another forum is a NOC tech at Penthouse or something like that. So apparently! Last minute assignment to spend a week halfway across the country. My boss was super apologetic, but gently caress it, I enjoy traveling. Y'all need to get in on this consulting racket. You get paid money to point out everything that's hosed up with an organization, but you don't have to stick around to actually fix it.

Are you (and anyone else in the consulting business) able to talk a little more about that side of the industry? I'm only about 4 or 5 years into my IT career, the balance of my work slowly shifting from more break-fix to implementation, but consulting seems like a much more appealing end-game than project management (or any other type of tech related management for that matter). Are consulting companies common, or are independent/self employed consultants more the rule? Are there any career decisions you would have made earlier to put yourself in a better position for consulting work?

Today is my last day at my current job and they're putting forward an offer to keep me on the books as a casual employee to assist them with any SCCM issues/remediation. I've never done a "casual" gig before. Is there anything I should watch out for or specify in my contract before I give them the ok? My next job is a full time with 24/7 after hours support though I've been told after hours calls are very very rare. I'm a little worried that I could get burned out or running into conflicts.

While not common, my company has restriction on side work that is grounds for instant termination. They aren't very upfront about it either. I would make sure that they know that you have a new full time position and that you most likely can't respond during business hours. I would determine some sort of SLA so they know that can't call you with a high priority issue and demand you drop what you are doing to address it.

Zabbix's SNMP discovery is surprisingly good, and configuring it for alerting/etc isn't necessary at all, though what it actually does even in a basic configuration is a little overblown for what you probably need.
