Nigriventer, a subspecies of what's commonly known as the Brazilian Wandering Spider. It's called this because it doesn't nest, or build webs, it just shoots around the jungle all night. Its incredibly toxic venom is being researched for erectile dysfunction, apparently, so keep that in mind if you think about taking medicine for that.  This cutie is N. Clavipes, or the golden silk orb-weaver. Its silk has been used in various textiles, including clothing, nets, and tapestries. I read once they were researching ways to farm its silk easily due to its incredible strength and elasticity, but they couldn't find a way to humanely and reliably extract it for mass manufacturing.  (obviously this was taken off goog search since you can't hotlink; credit goes to photographer in the image. Wiki did not have one.) E. Omnisuperstes is also known as the Himalayan Jumping Spider, because it lives above 20k ft elevation. I suppose technically, because it is a jumping spider, these spiders can jump higher than any other species. It's also been discovered on Mt. Everest, which is really cool because I didn't know any spider or insect lived that high up and in such cold climates. Basically spiders are cool and fascinating creatures. People have a tendency "ha ha spiders let's max out the squick factor grossss" but sit and watch one building a web sometime. The patterns some make in a web are incredible, just keep a healthy distance (especially if the web is in a funnel formation). There are some species that are pests, to be sure, and can't co-exist with humans, but they are not the monsters people make them out to be. Hug a spider today, but... very gently. ---------------- |

qwerinty's got the right idea. you may have heard of diving beetles but did u know... there are diving spiders too?? this is Argyroneta aquatica, or the diving bell spider, which gets its name from the diving bell-style webs it constructs and spends most of its time in. as you can see, they're able to leave their webs to hunt or resurface for air thanks to a bubble of air held in place by the hairs on its abdomen and legs. this photo doesn't really do it justice, but the bubble actually gives the spider a neat terminator 2-ish liquid metal look. you can find them in ponds in central europe and northern asia. |

I wanted to see if there were any extinct in the wild or critically endangered spiders, and it turns out there's none EW, but there are two critically endangered. I'm only going to post one, tho, since it's the more interesting one and they basically look like palette swaps. P. Metallica, or Gooty Sapphire Ornamental Tree Spider (esquire the III, ltd) is possibly the most beautiful spider I've seen a photo of. Maybe the perspective on this photo isn't the best, because it gets up to 8in leg span, according to wiki. That's still huge. It's a kind of tarantula, as is the other CR spider. People like to keep these as pets, apparently, and if you do a GIS you'll see why. They are absolutely gorgeous. ---------------- |

qwerinty, I don't know if you'll know which spider I'm talking about, but I remember reading a cracked article that talked about a kind of spider that had no web and just wrapped its prey in a bunch of layers of silk until the weight of the silk crushed the prey to death. if you do know, can you tell me what it is because I've been curious about it for a while and I can't remember the name.

Edit: Could be Philoponella Vicina. A GIS just turns up images in the Ulobridae family, which are non-venomous spiders which include bolo spiders.
