The other takeaway from the stuff they announced was that the arcade game was being developed on "PS4-like hardware" but oh no, we're not announcing a PS4 version yet, nope!

Also the HUD makes it look like an MMO.

Very PS4-like

All the characters are now mechs that resemble Final Fantasy characters. You play as a little pilot in their head.

Team Ninja has taken a lot of co-development over the recent years. It helps pay the bills and justify having a console development team of that size. The Team Ninja as we knew it was actually divided into two teams in 2013. Ninja Gaiden 3 bombing probably didn't help matters.

While the arcade industry in Japan has stagnated with the rise of mobile games, it is still profitable for many publishers. A game with a popular brand can make it easier to sell to arcades and get exposure. The developer can get payment from the initial sale of an arcade cabinet and a cut of the money players spend to play on it.

As for why it's taken so long for a sequel, key members of the original Dissidia team left to join mobile/social gaming company GREE. The talent exodus probably left the fate of the Dissidia in limbo. SE has decided to transition the Dissidia brand to arcades since it's a Final Fantasy game and the gameplay can work for arcades. I can't blame the original team for leaving since GREE's salary and benefits would be much better than that of any console game publisher.

It's notable that a lot of Japanese publishers are directly working with Nintendo/Sony/Microsoft in order develop console/arcade games. Namco-Bandai is working with Nintendo. Capcom is working with both Sony and Microsoft. Same with Square-Enix. We'd probably see a lot more console development teams disband in favor of mobile game development if platform holders weren't subsidizing Japanese publishers.

Furthermore, Square-Enix owns the Star Ocean IP. They can make a new entry without Tri-Ace's involvement.

Will be get Star Ocean 5 'big budget console RPG' or Star Ocean 5 'Breath of Fire VI' edition?

Well they pulled a decent sized roster out of a PSP so it's not too out there. I assume they're probably aiming to get Theatrhythm's cast in since Thearhythm is already a Dissidia spinoff.

There's been over 15 non-mmo console games, with an average of 5 per game not including main antagonists.

Since it's a 3v3 game that means we have a chance to see YRP or all 3 Lightnings fighting together and thats a plus in my book, though it means that we won't be able to do the full Noctourage.

Assuming main characters/antagonists and discounting any temporary playables (with exceptions like Laguna):

FF1: 2 (WoL, Garland)
FF2: 5 (FIrion/Maria/Guy/Leon, Emperor)
FF3: 2 or 6 (depends if you include the DS remake characters)
FF4: 12 (including Golbez, discounting Zeromus, Fusoya and the TAY exclusives)
FF5: 6
FF6: 15
FF7: 9 if discounting Aerith and Rufus
FF8: 9 including Laguna and Seifer, discounting Kiros and Ward
FF9: 9
FF10: 9 if you include both Jecht and Seymour, 10 if you also include Paine
FF12: 8 if you include both Vayne and Gabranth
FF13: 6, 8 if you include Serah and Noel

So that's easily 70+ characters.

The only thing I know about dissidia is that I have seen the cutscene that plays in the background of the theatrhythm track and the it looks like a crossover between every single final fantasy. Do those games have a story mode? I'd be curious to see what that looks like

It almost makes as much sense as the Kingdom Hearts series storyline, if that tells you anything.

I would do just about anything for a Final Fantasy game that includes a stage where you pilot Magitek Armor like a slower-moving Virtua-On mech.

You could put together 50 characters just from the SNES or PSX Final Fantasies. Hell you could put together 40-50 from FF6 alone if you want to cheat and add in all the moogles who act as character placeholders and help protect Terra.
