Peter Frampton's (mostly) instrumental cover of Black Hole Sun blew my fragile little mind the first time I heard it and it remains my favorite cover. The man is a guitar genius. The talk box action is the icing on top. Original - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3mbBbFH9fAg Frampton's asskicking cover - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nU8yuWddw0E And: Kendrick Lamar - Bitch, Don't Kill My Vibe https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GF8aaTu2kg0 And the chill as gently caress cover of that track by a Toronto band called Plaitwrights, that I hope, HOPE becomes the new hotness because they are amazing https://plaitwrights.bandcamp.com/track/bitch-dont-kill-my-vibe-cover (No youtube for this, sadly)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VpnHhii3ZIk - 'Material Girl', by Walk Off the Earth. Much, much better than the original by Madonna (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DNSUOFgj97M). Even if you don't like the quirky elements of the video, WOtE's version is more... musical, I think might be the term? Madonna's voice is thready and doesn't stay on key, and clashes horribly with the synths, to the extent that the first time I watched the video on Youtube, I thought it was a really low-quality rip with badly distorted sound. But no, it's like that even in the version on the official channel.

Some other Johnny Cash from American IV that isn't Hurt: The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face (Roberta Flack Cover) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EdSIlVZhsDw Johnny Cash and Nick Cave: I'm So Lonesome I could Cry(Hank Williams) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_nH0zVQSf78 We'll Meet Again (Vera Lynn), more on par than betterment of the original. [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KodNFsP6r88 American III has similarly awesome covers, I wouldn't call them all better, but they're goddamn expressive for a tired old dirt farmer. I See A Darkness (Bonnie "Prince" BIlly) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JWnUItw1ElU American V is just goddamn sad. While working one day I had a naked man with a mental disability answer the door one day and ask me if I liked Billy Joel. The original: "Try a Little Tenderness" by the Ray Noble Orchestra (1927). The cover: "Try a Little Tenderness" by Otis Redding (1966). The original: "Land of A Thousand Dances" by Chris Kenner (1963). The cover: "Land of A Thousand Dances" by Wilson Pickett (1966). These are probably a bit too easy / obvious, though.

Not sure if these have been mentioned before, but I think they're pretty neat, mostly for the severe genre-crossing going on. The band Here did a cover of the Ministry cover ( https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PyAoRObacF0 ) for a Ministry tribute album (Wish You Were Queer). I think it sounds more like the original than the Ministry version does (but I wouldn't expect a Ministry cover to sound anything like the original song anyway). And finally, this might be stretching the topic of the thread a bit (it's more of a remix), but I really like Kid Koala's version of "Moon River" https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fjFi4MHO_go (he's in a koala costume because he lost a bet and had to wear the suit for 100 shows).

Oh man, I could spend way too much time in this thread. While the original Dead or Alive version of "Spin Me Right Round" has the classic 80's feel going for it: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PGNiXGX2nLU it sounds almost too "empty" to me; like there isn't enough instrumental music or something. Dope decided they could clean that up with some driving guitars, and I instantly liked their version much better from the first time that I heard it: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xSMGeWPJewA Of course, when I think about covers I like more than the original, they are all almost invariably metal covers

I think Otis Redding's cover of "(I Can't Get No) Satisfaction" is honestly better than the Stones' original. Same for Chris Farlowe's version of "Out of Time", but that's because I think Farlowe might have edged out Mick Jagger as a singer (at least in the 1960s).
