Peter Frampton's (mostly) instrumental cover of Black Hole Sun blew my fragile little mind the first time I heard it and it remains my favorite cover. The man is a guitar genius. The talk box action is the icing on top.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VpnHhii3ZIk - 'Material Girl', by Walk Off the Earth.

Much, much better than the original by Madonna (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DNSUOFgj97M). Even if you don't like the quirky elements of the video, WOtE's version is more... musical, I think might be the term? Madonna's voice is thready and doesn't stay on key, and clashes horribly with the synths, to the extent that the first time I watched the video on Youtube, I thought it was a really low-quality rip with badly distorted sound. But no, it's like that even in the version on the official channel.

Rage Against the Machine's "Killing in the Name" https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bWXazVhlyxQ
cover by The Apples https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Nw-lm9tTFwk (instrumental cover, just called "Killing", but I had a "holy poo poo I know this song" moment about ten seconds in when I first heard it)

Bob Dylan's "Lay Lady Lay" ( https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N6ODMKSWzT4 ) was covered by Ministry ( https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ms7hd4e_EFg ). The band Here did a cover of the Ministry cover ( https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PyAoRObacF0 ) for a Ministry tribute album (Wish You Were Queer). I think it sounds more like the original than the Ministry version does (but I wouldn't expect a Ministry cover to sound anything like the original song anyway).

And finally, this might be stretching the topic of the thread a bit (it's more of a remix), but I really like Kid Koala's version of "Moon River" https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fjFi4MHO_go (he's in a koala costume because he lost a bet and had to wear the suit for 100 shows).

While the original Dead or Alive version of "Spin Me Right Round" has the classic 80's feel going for it:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PGNiXGX2nLU

it sounds almost too "empty" to me; like there isn't enough instrumental music or something.

Dope decided they could clean that up with some driving guitars, and I instantly liked their version much better from the first time that I heard it:

I think Otis Redding's cover of "(I Can't Get No) Satisfaction" is honestly better than the Stones' original.

Same for Chris Farlowe's version of "Out of Time", but that's because I think Farlowe might have edged out Mick Jagger as a singer (at least in the 1960s).
