This subreddit is a FANTASTIC idea. I'm so tired and bored of r/bitcoin and bitcointalk and the way that they rarely ban people from giving sound financial advice. How am I supposed to pump & dump when there are so many trolls over there exposing the scams?

I talked to a few I know. You see they know trolls are dirty, but they think of it in evolutionary terms: We as in us lower ones need the trolls to make us evolve better, and the trolls too they will evolve along with us. You see if we did not have trolls well then no more evolution. So you see we deserve the trolls by definition of the fact that they ARE indeed able to troll us, herd us, divert us, and direct us towards an outcome. So the elites feel: lets just pay some trolls and help those miserable people evolve better. Now do you understand? We are to blame by the definition of the fact that they are able to pull their miserable bullshit on us.

It is amazing that they think the actual elites give a poo poo about the opinion of people on reddit and even if they did they wouldn't bother paying trolls.

I am going to start reading bitcoin startups in the voice of Rusty Venture now though so thanks.

When did you realize the true value in Bitcoin and Blockchain tech? (self.Bitcoin)
soumis 1 jour de ça par kmcclry
Like the title says, I'm curious when people here first realized the true value/magnitude of this technology and what was the trigger.
For me, it was today because the pieces finally fell into place. I got around to watching Antonopoulos' 2 hour testifing to Canadian Senate from here[1] .
Up until watching that, I had purchased some Bitcoin, and messed around with it because I had simply heard it was decentralized. I'm pretty libertarian so supporting the growth of something decentralized was really attractive to me. It wasn't until today that Bitcoin became more to me than that.
I told my girlfriend that I watched that video and she looked at me like I was crazy. I slowly walked through the basics of blockchain and bitcoin (probably not super great since I'm new) and compared it to today's monetary system. That was really the epiphany moment for me because I've been an advocate for another gold based (or other precious metal based) economy. I've already understood how screwed up today's system is because I've done my due diligence with some Ludwig von Mises, John Maynard Keynes, etc (you have to know both sides of an opinion). Putting the pieces together that Bitcoin is a sort of gold (but better), and it is simply the reward from a more compelling technology was the one-two punch for me. Learning that decentralization, blockchain, and bitcoin could create a world with so much less central authority and do it in such an elegant manner was mind-boggling.
I think the best part was that during this conversation with her she had never heard that the Fed exists because it was made by bankers, for bankers. That her money isn't to her benefit, its really for someone else and she gets the scraps. Hearing that Bitcoin is money that is yours, and no one elses, was really attractive to her. I may have another convert that isn't just me coming along for the ride.

TL DR i read about bitcoin and my epiphany levels are elevated and stable because bankers gold standard von mises, also 2 hours antonpopolus speech

http://www.reddit.com/r/Bitcoin/comments/21ynmv/bitcoin_should_adopt_a_noninfinite_coin_supply/cghpxiv

This was found about a year ago, does anyone know if it's been fixed? I know they were discussing a fix, but any changes in the protocol require everyone to agree on them, so changes are difficult to put through. If it hasn't been fixed, it means that the number of bitcoins goes up infinitely over time.

Here's a discussion where they're talking about fixing this, but I don't know if the fix actually made it through. https://github.com/bitcoin/bitcoin/pull/3842

i recall they did eventually patch it, but after a whole bunch of whining that it wasn't a bug on every compiler, so it was fine.*

that means instead of it making too many bitcoins, it'd cause a fork.

* the boring explanation: the statement in question assumed that >>= (right-shift assignment operator) would store zero after you put in more right shifts than there are bits in the variable, but that's not actually defined behavior in the specifications. i'd be surprised to see the rationale for introducing a 1 in there after 64 right shifts, but what do i know, im just some rear end in a top hat and not a compiler maker guy.

e: turns out one of the links explained that it's a matter of hardware-level behavior:

quote:

[using a bitshift to divide by two] works great up to 63. But since there's no specification in C++ as to what to do if you take a 64-bit number and shift it 64 bits, it's undefined.
And what happens on many C++ compilers is that they just pass that decision on to the hardware to define it. And in the case of the most popular PC and server equipment, what the hardware does is it doesn't even look at the high order bits of the shifting amount.... so 64 = 0, 65 = 1, 66 = 2, etc.

to extend this boring explanation, if you did 64 right shifts by 1 on an 64-bit unsigned integer you would be guaranteed to get 0. it's just that on an individual operation the shift is required to be in [0,width) because C is designed to prefer producing optimal code on valid inputs (with the user being responsible for validity) over producing portable results on corner cases. if C did the mathematically correct thing, it would almost always have to wrap dynamic shifts with additional processing

Oh drat, I can't believe it was a real bug, the wiki page was so.. uhh.. sarcastic? and it was dated 1st of April. So bitcoiners write like this when they're talking about something serious?

quote:

This poses obvious problems, however. Prominent among them is the discussion on what to call 1 billion Bitcoin, which symbol color to use for it

quote:

The code below is carefully written to rely on undefined behaviour in the C++ specification - perhaps so it can be hardware accelerated in future.

quote:

Thanks to the new-goldmine interval being exactly 64 times the halving interval, and 64 being the size in bits of the currency datatype

quote:

Python unexpectedly returns 0 when shifting an integer beyond its size.

The whole thing is written like that.
