More in Patrick's very bad week. Leadership has a weekly breakfast and they ain't getting along.

quote:

But as Patrick arrived at the speaker’s quarters behind the House chamber for today’s breakfast, he encountered House Administration Chairman Charlie Geren in the hallway. Geren sniped about the letter Patrick had put out against Abbott. Patrick again denied having anything to do with it.

Once in the breakfast, Patrick and Straus began arguing over the House not moving on Patrick’s agenda bills, while Straus was critical of the Senate action on the border security bill. At that point, Abbott interjected his displeasure with the letter attacking the pre-k bill that he supported.

With Abbott and Straus coming at him, Patrick declared that he was tired of them “picking on me.” (All three offices have issued statements regarding the breakfast. Straus’s office writes, “Speaker Straus is confident that the members of the House and Senate, as well as the leadership, will work together well in the final weeks of the session.” The governor’s spokesperson said, “Governor Abbott has a strong working relationshiop with Lt. Governor Patrick and looks forward to working with the House and the Senate to address Texans’ priorities.” In a statement that sounds awfully familiar to the governor’s, Patrick’s office wrote: “The Lt. Governor has a strong working relationship with Abbott and Straus and looks forward to continuing their work on Texans’ priorities.”)

Fun stuff.

Strauss is pretty good as a coalition builder. He doesn't have to work with the democrats, but he does a little because I think he wants to be an effective speaker. Probably eyeing Cruz's Senate seat. When I worked in the lege my democratic member liked him a lot personally and said he got poo poo on a lot by the "former fetuses" of the party.

But don't worry, Sid Miller is doing every thing he can to make Texans fatter. He wants to bring back deep fat fryers to schools. Son of a bitch is in the pocket of big (canola) oil.

http://www.chron.com/news/texas/article/Texas-Gov-Abbott-responds-to-Jade-Helm-15-6229453.php

quote:

AUSTIN, Texas (AP) — Texas Republican Gov. Greg Abbott on Tuesday asked the State Guard to monitor a U.S. military training exercise dubbed "Jade Helm 15" amid Internet-fueled suspicions that the war simulation is really a hostile military takeover.

The request comes a day after more than 200 people packed a meeting in rural Bastrop County and questioned a U.S. Army commander about whether the government was planning to confiscate guns or implement martial law. Bastrop County Judge Paul Pape said "conspiracy theorists" and "fear mongers" had been in a frenzy.

Pape thanked Abbott for the letter to the Texas State Guard, which he believed helped emphasize the benefit of the military training rather than further fuel theorists.

"It's a sad when people's greatest fear is their own government," Pape said. "Think about the ramification of that. If Americans go to sleep at night worrying whether their own government is going to sell them out before morning, it'd be hard to sleep."

Suspicions about Jade Helm intensified on some conservative websites and social media after a map labeled Texas, Utah and parts of California as "hostile" for the purposes of the three-month training exercise that begins in July. Such war simulations aren't unusual, though the Army has acknowledged that the size and scope of Jade Helm makes it unique.

Texas and six other states are hosting the exercises on public and private lands. The Army says the terrain and topography in the areas selected are ideal to replicate foreign combat zones.

No other governor had so publicly addressed the training exercise.

"It is important that Texans know their safety, constitutional rights, private property rights and civil liberties will not be infringed," Abbott wrote. "By monitoring the Operation on a continual basis, the State Guard will facilitate communications between my office and the commanders of the Operation to ensure that adequate measures are in place to protect Texans."

U.S. Army Lt. Col. Mark Lastoria told the crowd in Bastrop on Monday that the exercise will involve 1,200 soldiers and all four branches of the military, according to the Austin American-Statesman. He said people with a "personal agenda" about the exercise had been spreading misinformation.

Lastoria spoke for two hours, but some left the meeting still unconvinced.

Pape told The Associated Press that some came from as far as Houston and Dallas to attend the meeting. He said the county could reap as much as $150,000 in economic activity from the exercise, which in Bastrop is set to include 60 soldiers, two Humvees and a helicopter.

Bastrop County is home to Camp Swift, the largest base for the Texas National Guard, and Pape said most people likely won't even notice.

"There's been a lot of dust thrown in the air, a lot of haze," Pape said. "Those who wanted to raise concerns on the one hand succeeded. They've raised a lot of attention about this. But the fact is the message is clear: Jade Helm is a well-designed and a well-constructed training operation."

Associated Press Writer Eva Ruth Moravec contributed to this report.

Abbott won his election easily didn't he? He's the incumbent GOP governor of Texas. His reelection is assured, any political realignment in the state that could endanger that is many years off from what I can see from inside Texas, this state just likes being Republican too drat much right now.

Why does he feel the need to pander to the extreme yahoos like this? If election time was near and a wingnut Tea Party challenger was primarying him, okay. But why?

Greg Abbott is a 100% true believer, dude. He's doing this because he literally believes the US loving military needs our lovely state guard to 'oversee' them just in case.

If you read something about Abbott and think 'this is dumb' it's because he's legitimately a very dumb, paranoid, little man.

I've heard a lot of jokes/speculation over the years about how the State Guard likes to recruit from the militias that plague the southern counties. While I'm sure that more than a few ex-Segregationists have made it there over the years, is there any truth to the rumors of a mass exodus? I've just thought of them as clubhouses for the degenerate "patriots" that wanted to join the National Guard but couldn't bring themselves to take orders from the "evil gubment", but if they're the same shitheads exercising their right to brandish assault rifles at brown people, how has nobody raised a stink about it?

edit: And while on the topic of me being clueless, why the gently caress does the Texas State Guard have a navy?

But why is the State Guard running it? Unless I'm horribly misreading the rest of the Wikipedia articles on US Naval Militias, most other states have their maritime militias and regular militias segregated with different command structures for whatever reason. But Texas has them all under the same umbrella, along with the State Guard Air Force.

It's a hold over from when Texas used to be a independent country that was never changed since probably because no one wants to be the one to reorganize an entire branch of the national guard.

The amusement keeps on coming. Texas immigration bills in danger because not all Texas Republicans are idiots.

quote:

With five weeks left in lawmakers’ session, hard-line measures — including bills on college tuition for those in the U.S. illegally and on “sanctuary city” policies — are languishing in the Senate and lacking traction in the House.

But the prospect that those efforts could fade away with a whimper doesn’t mean they’ve lost their emotional punch. If anything, the impasse highlights a simmering divide in the GOP.

Some Republicans, hoping to boost outreach to Hispanic voters, view the measures as unnecessary and needlessly inflammatory. Others, responding to the GOP’s conservative base, see an all-out response to illegal immigration as a key part of border security.

With lawmakers still needing to sort out the particulars on tax cuts, transportation funding and other significant legislation, some Republicans would rather avoid a disruptive immigration clash.

“We just don’t have the time in 140 days to deal with the big-ticket issues and also pander to a small percentage of movement conservatives,” said Rep. Jason Villalba, R-Dallas.

I want to believe...!

Earlier Thursday, Pickett and Stickland had a run-in on the House floor when Stickland used parliamentary procedures to remove a proposal by Pickett from consideration for the day.

Pickett seemed to good-naturedly poke fun at Stickland by walking from the front of the House floor to the lectern at the rear of the chamber, where Stickland mounted his spiking of Pickett’s House Bill 2346. He then said he was delivering to Stickland a large-print copy of the bill’s language, which would give limited powers of arrest to security officials at the Federal Reserve Bank.

On the page were two stick figures to help Stickland understand the bill. The drawing depicted an armed Fed security guard, which was labeled “Good Guy,” and a masked bank robber with a “Bad Guy” tag.
