cp should work in argument order (shell expansion of * is lex order I believe). I don't think cp directory iteration in the case of recursion is ordered?

cp works in argument order but cp -r copies things in directory order when it recurses into subdirectories

Subjunctive posted:

the directory's natural sort order may well not be by modification, it would be pretty unpredictable if it just used dirent order or whatever: on some filesystems IIRC deleting one file could reorder the other entries.

my car definitely does use dirent order, and i have indeed had a hundred-some folders, deleted one in the middle, copied a new one to my usb drive, and it was in the old folder's order in my car

I thought it was illegal to install apple os x on any computer that didn't come with it already installed, or did they change that?

I don't want to go to jail over an os, linux seems safer

yeah, all bets are off as soon as you start mixing programs that run on different toolkits, it's the usual linux problem.

of course it's not purely a linux problem. i'm on windows right now (sorry!) and it looks like in internet explorer, the cursor keys move through arabic text back to front (right arrow moves cursor left), but in firefox it's the other way round. it's a totally inconsistent user experience. i'm glad i'm not an arab because it must suck pretty bad having to deal with this stuff all day every day.

isn't this because firefox uses its own toolkit that doesn't quite behave like native on any platform?

it defaults to generating locales related to the one you chose at install time

because it was already in progress when we got there. it was first ubuntu, then it was debian-ified, then we hired collabora, and they gave us their singularity os they built for valve/steamos, then we hacked it up some more

for the next major release we're actually going to base it on fedora instead of debian

so you chose to generate every locale from your install data and you're surprised that you have to wait for every locale has to be generated?

we did not choose to generate every locale. i expected that locale data would be pregenerated (because why would you do anything else?) and that it wouldn't take 45 minutes to generate
