You guys seem to be missing the bit where he's whining that TR is the only game which "punishes" failure with gore.

Also I don't remember Lara getting blown into gory chunks when hit by a grenade either, so.

I love it when women bleed so i can feel something. I cant feel anything without a vulnerable woman bleeding.

Its just amazing to me how you can take lara croft, a big boobed babe, and somehow gently caress up her strengths as a female protagonist even more. Atleast she was strong and didnt give no fucks in the other games, scabtily clad but w/e. Now she is vulnerable and designed to make menchildren want to protect her which is just hilarious.

At no point in the development anyone said: "wait, this is stupid and makes us seem like perverts from the 1950s".

It's embarassing really. And actually stands out in a sea of embarassing video games.

So should I play this game or not? I'm confused.

What if I don't care about Lara Croft because she is an imaginary character in a video game; will I be safe then, or am I going to have PTSD like the rest of these goons?

It's a legit good game, if a bit short at 7-8 hours.

The most disturbing Tomb Raider death is landing on Midas' hand and turning to gold in the first one/Anniversary, by the way.

Also, I always found Resident Evil 4 deaths quite disturbing, particularly if you don't mash A fast enough in the knife fight, Wesker will overpower Leon and drive his dagger slowly into Leon's chest as he dies, the whole time you can see in Leon's eyes that he knows he's hosed :stare: Also the 'acid-to-the-face' death. And being savaged by a dog. And being dragged into a vat of molten metal by those giant thing.

This is turning into 'favourite little things in games' so I'll say that the thing dragging Tomb Raider down is that it falls into the 'Dead guy? Do a bit of CPR! It cures everything!' trap, which I thought was the preserve of terrible medical dramas.

Actually the argument about whether or not women should bleed in videogames is awesome. Especially the part when everyone said what they like and don't like and then got all pissy about it.

You're clearly never gonna grasp that the gore in Dead Space is an act of humiliation directed at the player, where the gore in Tomb Raider is intended to nauseate the player, but maybe you have a hope of grasping that I was not making an unqualified declaration about all games ever

I actually had to stop playing Tomb Raider because of those gory deaths. They were too painful to watch. I should go back and play it though.

I do laugh however when Isaac Clark gets ripped in half or has a needle jammed violently into his skull, so maybe I'm either a hypocrite or Isaac being a dude wearing space armor lesses the impact some.

As for things dragging a game down, GTAV doesn't offer any real good money making opportunities outside of the heist missions, and is kinda boring to play. Seems like they moved all the fun stuff to Online and even then they managed to turn it into a grind. Does Rockstar just hate fun?

I gave other examples and you ignored them. Stuff such as Resident Evil, Fear Effect, etc etc, have been killing and "punishing" the player with gore for years now. You're getting really hung on your waifu and shoving intentions in game developers' mouths.

I mean if you don't think removing bits of shrapnel out of your own arm, forcing a needle into your own eye and all that kind of stuff isn't intended to "nauseate" then you're being pretty weird. Anyone remember how messed up some of the old adventure game deaths were?

Those are all horror games. Or at least, they try to be horror, or at some point were. Horror is in their DNA somewhere.

Tomb Raider is not. Tomb Raider's been an action-platformer since its inception, and those uncomfortably long death animations were really the only inclination of it. It's one question to ask if it's successful at what it's trying to do, but it's another one entirely to ask if they should really be trying in the first place given the game in question.

I can understand not liking the death animations in TR, but people getting up their own arse about how the game is using violence in different and more intense ways than others is pretty funny.

I'd also argue the hordes of undead samurai and abattoir style storage areas full of their human victims qualify TR for horror status as much as any other game on this list. :v:

You gave one example and I explained why it's not exactly the same thing. I mean, you could make an argument that intending humiliation and nausea are both punishment, and unless I'm prepared to completely twist words beyond any reasonable definition, then I have to concede the point. Other games have used gore to "punish" the player, but there are many ways to punish someone, but, given the wording that I chose, you are in fact correct. I still think you're being dumb about the gore in Tomb Raider, but my statements, as I worded them, were not correct.

So, for the record, are you guys going to legitimately argue that the gore in Tomb Raider was not intended to be disturbing? Because I'm not "reading intent" into anything, I'm saying that these scenes are disturbing and taking the default assumption that this is deliberate. If you want to claim that these scenes are not meant to be disturbing, then the burden of proof is on you.

The developers have also come out and said that they intended to make Lara weak and passive because they want players to protect her. It is disturbing, no matter how much Poptart Fairy wants to whine that it isn't inbetween their screaming matches about Gamergate poo poo.

In Uncharted or Deadspace they never do that - the characters may start weaker or with limited weapons but they're never crying and making sad pouty faces before getting skewered through the face. They never linger on the character weakly grimacing and groaning while pawing at a stake through their face, and half of them are almost comedic (ie Drake failing to hold on in the airplane sequences and just flying off into the sky). It's always matter of fact YOU DIED, most of the time without you even seeing the character's face or reaction before they bite the dust.

They also don't have an attempted rape scene where a man chokes them to death for trying to escape being raped and that becomes their catalyst for turning into a mass murderer or defending themselves. You might be able to argue that it isn't meant to be nauseating if they had not included that, or the fact that they plan for the sequel to be taken up by a large portion of Lara getting therapy for PTSD.

Spaceman getting blown up because an enemy character threw a grenade at him is normal. There's not a long, slow, pornographic death scene where you see him flailing around as the life slowly drains from his body. You hosed up, you exploded, start over.

Sexy young female character getting fetishistically choked, stabbed and ripped to shreds as part of the story of the game is creepy and makes some people feel uncomfortable. If you can't tell the difference between these two things then I really don't know what to tell you.

Funnily enough Lara just dies when a grenade gets thrown at her.

Yeah the scene she gets felt up was weird as gently caress, but the other scenes - maybe you're getting a bit weird if you see that much sexuality in violence?

Also since we're in the territory Lara's moans from exertion were done by the actress during mocap if you thought they were deliberate sex sounds and were very offended you probably just unconsciously wanted to gently caress her but that's ok it's normal I won't shame you for it because your sexuality is yours and belongs to you accept others for who they are <3
