Welcome to The Roguelike Megathread!

Select a topic:
a) What's a roguelike?
If you want a full breakdown, check out the Roguelike thread! As a quick summary, however, roguelikes are games that have procedurally generated levels/content and permanent death. These two features, in combination with many different genres (from dungeon crawling to survival sims, from tank battles to spaceship battles, and even from card games to first person shooters!), work together to create highly replayable (and often very difficult) games!

b) Okay, then what's up with the megathread part?
Since there are so many roguelikes out there, it's not fair that only the big ones get the attention. Thus, this is a thread for everyone to post runs of their favorite roguelikes for everyone else to enjoy! If you have an obscure roguelike you want everyone else to see, or even if you just want to show off your own run of a roguelike that's already been played, :justpost:

c) How do I go about posting my run?
If you want to add your run to the thread, all you need to do is make sure that every update has a title which tells everyone:
-What game are you playing (only required on the first update)
-what character/run number
-What part is it on
-Witty/punny titles are encouraged (but optional)

If it's done using screenshots, also consider the courtesy of adding links to your previous/next parts to make it easier for people to catch up and read the whole thing. Finally, make sure to timg any table-breaking images.
ADDENDUM: Also consider uploading screenshot LPs to the SSLP Test Poster to reduce the amount of images per page!

There is NO LIMIT to how many people can post updates in the thread at a time, but please keep it to one run per person at a time (as in, don't start running two games at once). If you get bored of one game and want to start a different one, just let everyone know and find the most unique way to die that you can. If someone is already playing, or has played, the game that you want to play, :justpost:

d) That person isn't playing a roguelike! If you go by the Berlin Interpretation...
:getout:
There will be no arguing about whether something is a roguelike. If it has got procedural generation and permadeath, it's good enough for this thread :colbert:
(Likewise, please don't be a dick and exploit this to post something for the sake of starting an argument)

e) I have no experience with doing an LP before, where do I start?
The Tech Support Fort is a good place to learn about what you need to do for screenshot and video recording. However, if you just want to jump right in, here is a (shamelessly stolen from the DCSS thread) guide to a screenshot LP:

quote:

1. Create an account on LPix.org, and download Rightload, per the LP FAQ on Image Hosting. Spend time getting this image hosting correct before you start anything. It requires opening the .rar file for Rightload, and getting it pointing to your newly created LPix.org account.
2. How to capture screenshots with IrfanView
3. Get in the habit of taking screenshots whenever something happens; what might be boring for you could be something completely new for somebody else, and you can always just not use the screenshots later. Play a dummy game or two to get used to it.
4. Play your actual game and take your screenshots.
5. Choose a picture editing program. Infranview is probably best, I honestly just used mspaint. It did everything I needed.
6. Set that picture editor program as the default for opening a .png file. (Right-click, Open With, Choose default program)
7. Go nuts cropping your pictures. I'd just get in a crazy rhythm of: enter, crop, ctrl-S, exit, right arrow. Repeat that sequence 200 times.
8. CREATE YOUR POST IN WORDPAD OR NOTEPAD OR WHATEVER. Don't just open something awful and try to post. Your browser WILL close on you. You WILL lose an hour of work if you don't listen to me. Trust me on this one. Have SA open to preview as you go, BUT TYPE ALL EDITS IN WORDPAD THE ENTIRE TIME.

f) There's not enough content and I want to see more roguelike LPs right now!
Good news: there have been plenty of roguelike LPs before this that you can read/watch! Here's a short list of some recent ones:

The Dungeon Crawl group LP
...and its sequel!
...and a 2012 Dungeon Crawl LP!

What better way to start off the Roguelike megathread than with the precursor to them all, Rogue?

Rogue was developed in 1980 for Unix systems. In Rogue, you are an adventurer who is heading to the Dungeons of Doom to retrieve the Amulet of Yendor, then return to the surface. To do so, you must descend floor by floor, fighting (or running from) dangerous monsters and using any items you find along the way to give you an edge. Even though Rogue has been adapted to be able to be played on a Windows system (I am running version 5.4.4), the version I am playing is in ASCII, so I'll use opportunities throughout this game to talk about how ASCII graphics work. With that said, let's begin!

Horray, thread!

I'll be doing a playthough of Klei Entertainment's Invisible Inc.

While it only formally was released this Tuesday, it's been in testing for years, formerly under the title "Incognita". It's a turn based, squad base stealth game that has a lot of its model in common with X-COM. It's really great!

I'm doing a video playthough (in glorious 1080p!) of a full game, divided into segments. I aim for ~one hour per video, which will probably mean 2-3 missions a video. I'm playing on Expert level with the starter agents and items for this series.

Here's episode one. No witty title yet - maybe one of you can help?

So, if I were to do some DoomRL posts in this thread -- bearing in mind that they would come slowly and intermittently thanks to the double whammy of toddler and KSP -- would people rather see a fairly vanilla run on Normal (HNTR) difficulty that tries to show off a good variety of weapons/traits/bonus levels, or see me die and die and die and die and die against a series of special challenge modes?

I haven't played Nethack in years. I understand that the official release has been completely stagnant in that time, but there's been lots of activity around patches to fix/improve/extend various parts of gameplay, overhaul the UI to support variable-size terminals properly, etc. But at the same time I don't really enjoy Nethack anymore so I never get around to checking those out.

Wow, this game is really interesting; I might consider picking it up! I know that you haven't gotten had the lethal weaponry to use it, but what are the downsides to using it? You mentioned heartrate monitors may go off, but what does that affect?

Either would probably be fine; I would say to show off a vanilla run first, but many of the challenges play almost exactly the same as a normal game (but with a catch), so I'm sure it doesn't matter too much (unless you were planning to start off with something like Angel of Humanity).

Finally an excuse to do an IVAN LP. We'll see how far I get.

edit: and I'm dead. No screenshots because apparently I can't upload bmp images which is all the free version of fraps makes.

Summary of run:

First level of UT apparently had magic mushrooms, because a kobold polymorphed into a goblin butcher which = death at that level. I ran away but my puppy didn't make it.

Second level of UT I got my leg caught in a meteoric steel bear trap and lost my leg. I picked it up and tried to flee back to the starting town because I think the healer will reattach it but on the way a kobold got a lucky hit and knocked me unconscious and then killed me. Welp.

Next run hopefully not so unlucky. At least I found out about the screenshot problem early rather than late.

Do the vanilla run first IMO, and then if you're still into it go for the challenge modes.

I should probably play DoomRL at some point...

Oh sorry, forgot to mention that. Heartrate monitors are usually +2 alarm. So you want to avoid bloodbaths because the higher alarm tiers spawn more guards. That's one of the big problems, the other being that the ammo/power it takes to use a lethal weapon is usually greater than a corresponding non-lethal. These bad things combine pretty convincingly - killing more people raises the alarm and spawns more people that you really don't want to kill because now you're low on ammo. Oh, you also take a small penalty for lethal force - 50 creds per kill or something.

The main uses of lethal force in Invisible Inc. are a.) when it's the only option or b.) when it saves you more agent-turns than it takes away by raising the alarm. I think people underestimate the later. There are a lot of situations that you COULD solve by having an agent pin a guard in a key room but would do better by just killing the problem guard and freeing up that agent to do other stuff. A lot of this is just learning the level gen and getting an idea of how many agent-turns it's going to take to clean out a certain section of the map.

I've won before, having said that I keep being killed at the moment. Second death was to the big plant that guards the exit of the UT. The damage:

I was a little careless with my wands which caused me to use all my troll blood (healing) and then I got mobbed by the lesser plants the big plant summons and that was that.

Third run, still alive. Now with lore and strategy content.

---

IVAN stands for something in latin that means a long road to death (or soemthing like that). Supposedly, it was designed to be unwinnable. It is actually entirely winnable, but fairly challenging, in particular because unlike most other roguelikes the game is constantly trying to kill you and it's sneaky about it. Everybody playing crawl knows vault:8 (or vault:5 now) in crawl is a tough level. In IVAN, you probably didn't know that eating a stale banana will make your character drunk (invisibly other than an initial message) and if you subsequently pray there is a chance you will pray to the wrong god who might do things like destroy all your equipment. The game will also repeatedly spawn out of depth monsters that will murder you, even when you are many hours into the game. For the purposes of this LP, I will try to kill all of them, including the uniques, but no promises on success.

The "story line" in IVAN is that you are a slave, who is offered your freedom in return for defeating a giant evil frog at the bottom of the gloomy cave. Killing that frog and returning his head to the high priest is one way to win. There are (not very secretly) deeper levels of the gloomy cave however, and if you explore them you may find other, more challenging ways to win.

The beginning:

You start as an unarmed slave in the beginning town which has a few things of interest, in particular a shop selling bananas (i.e. food). It also has a sumo wrestler, but we will return for him later. For now, I start by jogging around on the world map to safely raise my agility a little bit, buy some bananas and eat them for food, and then equip the banana peels as weapons and head out to the underwater tunnel (first dungeon) with my trusty puppy.

In the second post my agility can be seen to have risen to 12 from the world map running. Normally it would be 14, but each character has a hidden "weak" and "strong" stat. The weak stat levels up slowly and the strong stat levels up quickly. In this character's case, the weak stat is apparently agility, which isn't great because agility is your speed stat, but I'm just going to roll with it. Best case is always that charisma is weak stat because shop prices don't really matter; but c'est la vi. I may be able to guess later on what my strong stat is but for now I don't know. Best case would be intelligence.

Entering the underwater tunnel ("UT"), which is the first dungeon:

My first interesting find is a fir quarterstaff +3. Wooden quarterstaffs are terrible, but this is +3 which is actually pretty good because it means its accurate (because its light) and does pretty good damage because of the enchantment. I was expecting this staff to probably be the best weapon I would find in UT, but then only a few steps later...

This is a REALLY aggressive weapon, and would normally be a solid mid-game choice, so is great to find so early because it will help with the plant boss at the end of the UT. This weapon is broken (like literally, not like it is OP), because IVAN generally spawns powerful equipment broken, but we will hopefully find a scroll of repair so we can fix it. The reason why this weapon is good is not just the +3 enchantment, but also because it is made of meteoric steel. Why that matters merits a short detour on IVAN's material system, which is fairly unique among roguelikes.

In IVAN, everything is made out of a material. Each material has underlying weight, strength and flexibility properties that effect not only how heavy it is, but also how much damage it does, how accurate it is, how easy to break, etc. Meteoric steel is essentially an upgraded version of steel and is mid-tier, but that is good for the start. A lot of winning IVAN is getting better material weapons.

A scroll of change materials is a great early drop (they are very rare, and one of my personal "ascension kit" items). I will now try extra hard not to get killed because this is a lucky early drop that I otherwise might have to burn a wish on later because even if it is not an essential item it is at least a very valuable one. As the name implies, this scroll allows me to change items into any material of my choosing, so long as I have the intelligence to support it. Better materials require higher intelligence, which is the reason intelligence is such an important stat. I won't be "sci-talking" in this game as a personal conduct (wherein one can train intelligence by speaking to certain creatures subject to certain other conditions), so raising intelligence will be more difficult.

My equipment by the end of the first floor of the UT. +1 Iron gauntlets and bronze chain mail are reasonably good finds, and I am hoping to find a scroll of repair for my meteoric steel halberd +3, which will be a significant upgrade to my fir quarterstaff +3.

I've fixed my halberd and am wielding it. Somewhat ironically, I find a broken meteoric steel war hammer +3 on the ground. Would normally be important but doesn't matter here for obvious reasons. I pick it up to repair and sell later.

I get caught in a bear trap but free myself. In my first game in this LP, the beartrap was made out of meteoric steel and took off my leg, which led fairly quickly to my demise. Here I am less unlucky and the beartrap is made out of iron, so I escape without much issue.

I've used to a pick-axe to dig out the wall where I am standing, which reveals the entrance to UT:4. We won't be going here for a while because it is an off-branch (i.e. doesn't lead to the exit) that is filled with dangerous crystal golems that would eat my lunch right now. We will be back later to kill them and take their glowing crystals (which are useful as an unbreakable lightsource).

Flaming swords are decent weapons because of the extra unblockable fire damage and because they are unbreakable light sources. I'm not going to be using this sword as a weapon, but I will pick it up to keep monsters from using it and so I can sell it later. Notice that it has also spawned broken, per IVAN's aforementioned habit of spawning good items broken.

My equipment by the end of UT:2. The ring of fire resistance is good, as fire resistance is a must have against the kamikaze dwarves in the gloomy cave. Ring of teleport control is a nice to have.

A look at my weapon experience. As your character fights in IVAN, he gets better with both the weapon type (swords, hammers, etc.) and the specific weapon you are using, which causes more damage (and possibly more accuracy, not sure here). I'm standing on a dead zombie, which is a common enemy but not dangerous unless they pick up a powerful weapon or give you leprosy, which is annoying because it causes your limbs to fall off, which is bad.

The plant boss of the UT. I haven't been showing most of the monsters I've been fighting so far because they have just been trash kobolds, zombies, etc. The big plant hits pretty hard, constantly spawns smaller plants so you can't rest to heal and has a lot of health. He also sits on top of the exit. Notice that the game has given me a special danger message, which it will sometimes do vs. powerful monsters. Vs. extremely powerful monsters the game will sometimes panic your character, preventing you from fighting, which is less helpful.

Beating the big plant is doable in most games but the means will vary depending on what has dropped. If you have a wand of teleportation, you can just send him elsewhere but he will keep spawning small plants at a distance so you will probably want to deal with him eventually. In my case, I have a wand of lightning so I zap him once with that, then zap myself with my wand of haste and go after him with my meteoric steel halberd.

This strategy isn't working great, and you can see here I am almost dead. The issue is I don't have a lot of armor. Fortunately, I do have some healing potions (healing liquid / troll blood) so I heal up. and re-enter melee.

Eventually the plant goes down ("is brutally destroyed" in the game's words). I was out of healing by this point so good news.

The plant drops three pineapples, which are about enough to get back to satiated food level.

My equipment by the end of UT 1-3. I found a ring of electricity resistance which is good. I didn't show it, but I spent some extra time fighting the plants unarmed to train up my unarmed skill, which will be important in a moment. My endurance (i.e. HP) is also a bit higher as rest-healing injuries trains it and I rested after fighting the smaller plants to train my unarmed fighting skill.

Outside the UT. The city of Atnam can be seen to the north.

Next order of business is Atnam. Atnam is the main (and only) city in IVAN, and has a shop that sells some equipment (no-restock), a library that sells scrolls and books (also no re-stock), a healer (leprosy), some npcs that can fix items for a fee (based on item value), a slew of guards and townsfolk and Petrus, who is the high priest. If one were to zoom out (which you can't) and see all of atnam from high altitude, one would notice that the main building, the cathedral, is in the shape of a giant frog. There is a trick here where you read a scroll of taming, which charms monsters, while standing next to one of the elite guards and then you can either use him as a powerful pet or take his equipment, which is extremely strong at this point in the game.

I will not be using this trick for two reasons. One is personal conduct. The other is that I'm not actually sure it makes the game easier. Basically, IVAN spawns more dangerous enemies the more dangerous it thinks you are. So if you roll into the gloomy cave packing mithril plate mail, the game will think you are a badass and send you some bad dudes to tangle with. The problem is that your stats will still be low level, including importantly your hitpoints. I think with careful training this is a surmountable issue, but I prefer to just not charm the guards. If you are charming guards but don't want to deal with the more powerful monster spawns, you can just sell their equipment instead, which will net you a pile of gold. Again, I won't be doing that here either.

This is a view of the shop. Sometimes you get lucky and there is something really valuable here, but most of the time not. The top right is the shopkeeper, top left is a slave you can buy as a pet (I don't bother) and the rest is equipment to buy. The big stack of 100 bananas is always there, but the other items (with a few not that interesting exceptions) are random each game.

In the bottom right of the store is a mithril thunder hammer, which it can be seen is very expensive at >1000 gold. It's a dangerous weapon that is not only a mithril hammer (and mithril is significantly better than the meteoric steel weapon we are using now) but it ALSO shoots lightning bolts on hit. BUT this is IVAN, so those lightning bolts bounce around and will happily bounce back and hit you in the groin and kill you. So we won't be using any thunder hammers.

This is the library. The librarian is an important sci-talk character and can raise your intelligence by ~2 points once you get to 20 intelligence. But as mentioned before we won't be sci-talking in this LP (there's nothing wrong with it, I'm just making the game a bit harder because I feel like it).

What does matter here is whether I am lucky enough for the library to be selling any scrolls of charging. I get two, which is reasonably lucky. Scrolls of charging will recharge a wand, which will matter later on when we get some actually valuable wands.

I also got lucky in that the library is selling a bunch of books, so I use the opportunity to learn how to pray to a bunch of different gods. Religion in IVAN, as with materials earlier, is different than in most other roguelikes but very important and merits a detour.

Religion in IVAN is unusual vs. other roguelikes in that praying is a piety increasing, rather than decreasing activity. Whenever you pray, as long as it isn't too soon to your last prayer (~4 hours) you make that god and similar aligned gods happy and piss everyone else off. In practice, one can pray to handful of different gods and keep them all happy. I pray to: cruentus (not seen here, gifts troll blood which heals), infuscor (various buffs, notably ESP which lets you see monsters via telepathy), cleptia (haste buff), nefas (summons a mistress pet, not seen here), mellis (food, endurance training) and loraticus (repairs items).

Chaotic and neutral gods are generally much more helpful than their good conterparts so I always pray to them vs. the good gods. Rarely, praying to a god will summon an angel, which is a powerful ally until it leaves. VERY rarely, it will summon an archangel, which is a different unique unit for each god but invariably a total badass. We may or may not see any archangels this game, but we will probably see some angels, which I will try to abuse to kill the shopkeeper in the gloomy cave earlier than I otherwise would. I also will try to use angels against early enemy uniques, although that strategy stops working quickly as the uniques get stronger than the angels.

Loraticus fixing my broken meteoric steel hammer.

Petrus, the high priest of the golden frog and arguably the most dangerous monster in the game.

His equipment. As mentioned earlier, high level equipment is made out of better materials. He has an amulet of lifesaving, a unique sword, and a slew of armor made out of high-tier materials and heavily enchanted.

Petrus dialogue.

I'll probably avoid changing my limbs into other materials to make the game harder, but it's always fun losing your leg in a fight, praying to your god, being gifted a steel leg, and then brutally kicking monsters to death with your ridiculously strong metal leg. But then the game will spawn dangerous monsters because it thinks (somewhat correctly) that you are much more dangerous, and those monsters will probably murder you.

I'm totally excited for this thread. The subforum needs as many megathreads as it can get, they really do bring people together.

My dad had Rogue on his work computer back in the 80's and I used to play it all the dang time. This was back when laptops were huge clunky things weighing like 40lbs and their carrying cases were likely bulletproof. He also got from a coworker a printed out strategy guide. Bear in mind that these were before the world wide web was really a main function of the internet, let alone gamefaqs, so this was a big deal to me. It's crazy all the little hidden ins and outs the game had. Like if you were in a position to make a wish, you could get some serious end game equipment if you knew exactly how to ask for it. Or another trick I liked was that you could write in the dust on the floor pretty much anywhere in the game, and there were magical words if you knew them. (Hint: The game designers were Tolkein nerds. Spoilers to follow) If you wrote "Elbereth"in a doorway, one of the holy names/words in LotR, monsters could NOT cross the entryway

I mentioned at the start of this LP that there was a sumo wrestler in the beginning town and that we would be returning for him. He gives a very important (and unique) item if you defeat him in a sumo match. He is also fairly challenging to beat, which is why it helps to train yourself a bit before facing him.

The sumo wrestler. Note that I am bloated (overfull), as he will not let you challenge him unless you are, saying that you are too scrawny.

Here I screw up. I earlier mentioned that if you are drunk and pray, there is a chance you will pray to a random god instead of the one you picked, often times with dire consequences. I've lost all my equipment late game from making this mistake before. Here, I get lucky and although I pray to a good god (Sophos, which would normally be a disaster on a chaotic character), I am OK as I haven't been praying enough yet for the good gods to hate me. Whew.

Sumo wrestler giving me the rules of the match. I am now hasted, as that is one of the few buffs you can take with you into the fight (haste courtesy of cleptia).

The fight begins. Notice I have lost all my equipment for the duration of the fight.

Loss #1.

Loss #2. Death by groin destruction this time. This is an issue because if I lose one or two more times I will be out of bananas in the shop and won't have enough food to challenge him again.

Fight #3. I've knocked off his arms and know that I am probably going to win.

Another lucky hit knocks him unconscious. Now he's definitely toast.

The victory text.

The spoils: a belt of levitation. Although not shown, it is made out of angel hair, so has a lot of armor (7) and is very light. More importantly, it gives my character permanent levitation as long as I wear it. This not only allows him to walk over world map water, so I don't have to go through the UT to get to Atnam from the starting village anymore, but also protects from traps in the gloomy cave. Many players get through the UT and then die in the gloomy cave to traps. The worst trap in the UT is a bear trap made out of a high-tier material like mithril, which can easily take off limbs that get stuck in it. The best trap in the gloomy cave is a bear trap. The worst trap is a big mine, which will do a tremendous amount of damage to characters without fire resistance (i.e. kill them) and heavily injure resistant characters (or kill them if they don't have enough HP yet). Mines will also break your wands. There is a cascade effect that kills many characters wherein a mine hurts you and breaks your wands, which then explode and deal the final blow. So anyhow the point is mines = bad and levitation protects us from stepping on them.

The entrance to the gloomy cave.

I was going to do an IVAN lp because I didnt think anyone else would be crazy enough to do it! Instead I guess Ill probably give Caves of Qud or some other roguelike a try. For what its worth you didnt talk about the glitch with the librarian shop keeper so Ill mention it briefly here. You can sell scrolls and books to the librarian and then kick them out the door and the shopkeeper loses posession of them so you can sell them to them again. It means you can buy out their entire inventory and also have enough gold to buy anything you'd want from the shops.

From how people talked about IVAN in the roguelikes game thread, I was expecting some kind of Shadowrun-meets-Mad Max post-apocalyptic thing what with the limbs made out of weird materials and the gods and so on. I was not expecting a tropical slavery setting.

Has the game, uh, gotten hard yet? I mean, so far this mostly seems doable, and IVAN is famously difficult.

Loon, Crazy and Laughable

As I understand it, the real scaling problems come when you try to game the system to get powerful gear or god-gifts, or you get (un)lucky and find a powerful item. This run aee a to be avoiding most of that.

Lilli
Feb 21, 2011

Goodbye, my child.
Most of the difficulty of IVAN comes from the fact that your character is incredibly fragile even if your gear is good and your stats are high. It doesn't matter if you have thousands of HP if some fucker comes and stabs you in the groin doing 2 damage but killing you anyways because well you got stabbed in the groin, oh and there's no armor for the groin so enjoy the fact that you're liable to get hosed no matter what! A lot of the game isn't hard its just unfair, it scales poorly, and the fragility of your character makes it awful. You can game the system in a lot of ways to avoid the stuff people normally complain about; namely you can drop all your gear on the ground before you go down a set of stairs. Since levels are generated when you walk on a set of stairs those stronger enemies won't spawn since your equipment isn't registered. It won't stop the prefixed encounters from murdering you anyways like the dark frog sages on GC 8 murdering you with magic from across the map when you can't see them, but its a mitigating factor. The game is technically winnable, but it requires playing in dumb ways and doing a lot of boring poo poo.

Basically IVAN isn't a game you play to beat because a bunch of the underlying systems are broken in unfun ways. It's a game people recommend you play to have fun with the neat alchemy, gods, and limb system to gently caress around and enjoy kicking things to death with your adamantium legs or get lucky and stumble into summoning an archangel to murder a boss.

What a childish tactic!
Don't you think you should put more thought into your battleplan?!

Entering the village, the first sign of the enemy’s presence was an armor piercing shell glancing off the curved hull of the lead tank. The shot arced wildly past Sergeant Burnett’s own Sherman, the man whipping his head around to follow it as crashed through the corner of a building and buried into a hillside a few hundred yards behind him. That was when he spotted the Panzer IV rolling up behind them from the side.

“PeeZee Four behind us, we’re boxed in, ambush, ambush!” he shouted into the radio, which was only adding to the chaos as Beginner’s Luck, the lead tank, reported an AT gun in front of them and someone else was saying something about an MG team. True to it's name, the lead tank had gotten lucky, it was an M4A1 Sherman, built with a cast-metal hull. Thicker and curved, the front hull armor could, on rare occasion, deflect shots that would penetrate a standard M4 Sherman like Burnett's, which had a flat, welded hull.

“Douglass, get this turret turned around!” Burnett shouted as he threw a smoke grenade overboard. The smoke would make it harder for the enemy to hit them, but it wouldn’t last long.

“What about that AT Gun?!”

“Let the lead tanks worry about the Pak, we’ve got AP loaded, we’re engaging the Panzer!”

Burnett’s tank, the Berlin Express, swung its turret around to the rear where the Panzer IV had come to a halt behind a small ridge with only its turret visible. The Panzer IV was roughly comparable in firepower and armor to his own M4 Sherman, and with both of them hull down from the other, it was anyone’s guess who’d win in a shootout.

The Panzer IV fired, missing one of the other Shermans behind the Express.

“Alright, let’s get his attention! Target is the enemy Panzer, close range, 200 yards. Open fire!”

“Damnit, we hit dirt! Reload and adjust upwa-” The Panzer IV’s cannon barked again, another shot streaked past the Express and Burnett heard it impact on something close behind him. Turning around, Burnett was just in time to see every hatch on the Beginner’s Luck blow outward with jets of flame. The M4A1's frontal hull armor may have been a bit tougher, but the rear armor was just as weak as any other Sherman, and the Pz IV had just delivered a shot straight to the back of the turret, setting off the tank’s ammo storage. The whole crew likely died instantly. The AT gun also opened fire, slamming a 75mm shell right into the front armor of another Sherman, Bucket of Bolts, with the surviving crew immediately bailing out in case the stricken tank caught fire.

Burnett’s loader threw another 75mm armor piercing round into the chamber.
“Gun up!”
“Fire!”

Burnett watched as the AP round slammed into the Panzer’s thick gun mantlet and bounced off, leaving a small gouge in the armor, but nothing more.

“Gun up!”
“Fire!”

Another shell went hurtling towards the panzer, but this just impacted into the dirt in front of it like their first shot had. Burnett watched as the Panzer's turret adjusted slightly, taking aim at his own tank. Before it could fire though, a shot from one of the other Sherman’s slammed into the German tank. The panzer exploded magnificently as the tank's ammo set off. So powerful was the force of the explosion that the turret was blown upwards, clean off the tank, landing a few feet away from the burning hull.

“Nice kill Boop!” Burnett shouted into the radio as he looked over at the successful Sherman nearby. Betty Boop sported a longer barreled cannon and a risque depiction of its namesake. Another explosion sounded, Bomb Here, the fifth tank in his platoon, reported the destruction of the AT gun. A tense minute passed as the remaining Shermans strained to notice new threats, but none presented themselves.

“You know sarge, I wish we had one of those Seventy Sixers, the fives can’t kill tanks for poo poo.”

Before Burnett could reply to his gunner all hell erupted around them as enemy artillery rained down on the village. The artillery was accurate, pre-plotted fire, but was mercifully brief, the Germans must’ve fired only a single salvo before packing up to retreat. It’d done enough damage though, radio reports from the task force’s infantry platoons reported over a dozen casualties.

Surveying the burning village, the wrecked panzer, and the flaming pyre that was Beginner’s Luck, Burnett sighed to himself. “Gonna be a looong war…”

Armoured Commander: The WWII Tank Commander Roguelike

Hello and welcome to one of the more unique Roguelikes I've ever encountered! As you can see from the battle above, Armoured Commander (or ArmCom for short) is a Roguelike that puts you in the role of the commander of a single Sherman medium tank in occupied France as you battle your way towards Berlin and, more importantly, do your best to survive! I find this game quite fun and challenging and I want to show it off to people who might not have heard about it. In addition, I plan on explaining various game mechanics (as I understand them) and the strategies I use to survive the ordeals of armored combat.

While based on the 1987 Avalon Hill solitaire board game/wargame "Patton's Best", ArmCom has evolved in many ways, with the game's solo developer, Gregory Adam Scott (also known as Rev_Sudasana), adding new features and changing others. The game is still in early development and Mr. Scott is making frequent updates, sometimes daily! Currently ArmCom features one campaign (the US 4th Armored Division), 17 Sherman variants, and a large variety of German Tanks, SPGs, AT Guns, and assorted infantry and infantry support vehicles. If you're interested in playing the game yourself, you can find it here.

Oh and don't worry, my future posts will not use the awful fiction prose I used above. :v:

Join the War Effort!

The primary goal of the game is to survive from late July 1944 to May of 1945. That is roughly ten months of combat, and like any good roguelike, I will die, probably a lot! While each tank holds a crew of five unlucky bastards, the tank's commander is considered to be your character, and its game over if he suffers a tragic fate. To be honestly I rarely make it later than the end of August before dying or being sent home with terrible injuries. Sometimes I have upwards of a half dozen tanks shot out from under me during that period of time. My last career ended in early September when I was sent home due to injuries received when my tank, Cannonball Six was knocked out during an ill-advised shoot out with a Panther.

The good news is, you can be one of those unlucky bastards, as a recent update by the dev allowed crew to be nicknamed! In order to avoid the RL Megathread getting cluttered with "dwarf me" posts, I've set up a Google Form for anyone who is interested in taking the fight to the Nazis. Just fill in your name here and you'll be burned alive in a wrecked tank in no time!

But there are a gently caress ton of SSLP posts on one page, it's becoming incredibly difficult to read. How about like, you use the SSLP test poster and just link the posts instead? Maybe with a couple pictures for a hook like the title page of the LP the link is for or something? It would make it easier to read.

How long does the test poster store the threads for? I was under the impression it was something temporary, but I'll go dump mine into it if it's something permenant.
