I read Malice's book today. The dude is an idiot. The whole book is pretty much him preaching and talking about loving around on his wife who has zero self esteem apparently. Also everything that happens to him is a sign from god. He says his dogs barked at him because the devil was in him. He only has a crisis of faith during two separate HIV scares (because he cheated on his wife nonstop). He blames Pharrell for his career stalling, talks about hustling for maybe 1 page. The book wasn't very well written, he censors cussing but in a very obnoxious way like "B#+%H", he also says "literally" wrong and too much. Any weak slang he puts in quotations like "we went to his house to 'kick it'". Maybe he's a different person now but he seems simple as hell. Aside from a month of selling crack his whole life has been banging groupies, being bad with money, and being scared of the supernatural.

He's a dude that grew up on the streets and that's all he knows what did you expect Give any regular hustler rap money they're gonna do and be the same

E; I'm not articulating this well sorry. He doesn't really talk about buying nice poo poo as much as debt collectors calling all the time, this is post Lord Willin', and he's talking about banging groupies while going to church and spouting jesus poo poo to others. He comes off as insincere and hypocritical is what I'm trying to say. I like clipse and him as a rapper. Robert Analog fucked around with this message at 22:48 on May 18, 2015 |

Honest question how do people who's lives were just hustling, drug dealing or being in a gang get rap deals? I just don't see the steps from street life to a Sony executives office. Any books out there or articles on how these famous rappers become these famous rappers?

# ? May 18, 2015 22:48 |

It's not really going from selling crack since like the fifth grade to being a suit in an office.

i dont know but hustling and selling drugs wouldnt take up all of your time so you could develop your rap abilities on the side and eventually, if you have the right combination of talent and luck, build your name up by getting local gigs etc and then get noticed by somebody with enough industry connections to get you a deal

Chief Keef wasn't actively pursuing a deal, he was just a kid on house arrest making music videos for fun with his goons. A lot of these guys just rap for fun and it takes someone to intervene to get them to focus solely on making money with rap. I know T.I. personally oversaw keeping Doe B away from the hood and 50 Cent did the same with Kidd Kidd to the point he went into his own pocket to move him out of New Orleans. I wish I could find it, but Young Chris had a really interesting interview about the transition. Being signed to a major label, being considered "put on" as a rapper, but not having any rap money to show for because of delays with label bullshit and waiting on your advance to clear. So he's stuck still hustling in Philly, but the next week he might be in the studio with Beans and Jay. vanbags fucked around with this message at 23:50 on May 18, 2015 |

Yeah, I find this aspect very interesting. My default, negative, opinion is that a lot of time rappers back stories are created or embellished for marketing.

that's mostly true of rap in general, which didn't exist until 2007

this and another chapter from his book ( http://www.billboard.com/articles/columns/the-juice/6531681/scarface-diary-of-a-madman-excerpt ) really make me want to read it. has anyone here done so? dudes quite the author assuming its not all his ghost writer. guess it makes sense considering his natural penchant for storytelling

I chose to quote you but this goes for anyone interested in the backstory of a lot of rappers, 50 cent summarizes a very street attitude that transitions into a fortune 500 esque business style. I can link some videos but he honestly does a ton of them.

You guys listen to that new Ka album, Days of Dr. Yen Lo? The beats are more funky and less sparse than The Knight Gamble, but Ka's voice still makes it all sound pretty foreboding. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hb10u_7mIn4
