I like Swan Lake and New Pornographers so I feel like I should like Destroyer, but they never grab me. Where should I start? They have about 20 albums.

I was actually a latecomer to all the Canada stuff; my real introduction to Destroyer was Kaputt, which somehow managed to avoid being too pastiche-y. He slapped "Bay of Pigs" onto the end of it, although he'd released it as a single a year or two prior. I think it's one of the best songs of the past ~10 years, honestly. I've since dabbled in all his old stuff.

So I just bought a ticket to the Saturday of Pitchfork Fest, almost exclusively for Sleater-Kinney. I was actually supposed to cover it for a site, but I let another writer take it because I'm doing Lollapalooza and Riot Fest as well. I also don't know much about most of these bands, and was wondering if you goons could help me decide who I should prioritize/be excited about.

For reference, I typically like hard-charging, guitar-driven music (I'm a metalhead first and foremost), but I have relatively varied taste. Just know that my taste in indie leans less jangly and more punchy. I also like hip-hop, and have almost no interest in anything synth-lead or electronic. Tell me about some of these bands. An asterisk marks ones I'm planning to check out for sure, while a question mark is a genuine "who is this and why should I care?"

I understand the appeal of Todd Terje but I can't imagine watching it live. That alone might be reason to walk by the stage.

Beyond that, what the other guys said. The New Pornographers are all just really good musicians and put on one of the better shows I've seen in recent years last November.

Todd terje current outing is a live band, not a dj act. They really do a good job of transposing the heavy sample and studio style of the music to a live performance.

As a big New Pornographers fan I suggest you see them. Great live act, and if they don't make you want to dance you're broken inside. Ex Hex is a lot of fun (kind of a garage rock sound), and if you like Sleater-Kinney, you probably know about Wild Flag, so you're already familiar with Mary Timony (who you might know from the 90s band Helium).

Future Islands apparently puts on a great show, but I'm not a fan of their albums so I've only seen their famous Letterman performance. You might not like synth-driven stuff but they might be a fun show anyway?

I am really tired of hearing Seasons at this point. If it's possible for something in the indie genre to be overplayed, it's that song.

Hope you guys are getting ready for summer!

Neon Indian just put out a new single today titled Annie. I loved Psychic Chasms, liked Era Extrana, and am stoked to see where Alan goes with this 3rd release. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TTuT1s-YPLE

If you're into artists like XXYYXX or Giraffage check out this track by Misogi titled Church. It makes use of a lot trap stylings. Hell of a day starter. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EktWKbvP7z8

This song by Poolside is starting to get some attention on the radio. It's a really groovy, smooth track. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=suWbFPaVoEA

Hibou reminds me of pretty much every other "beach-rock revival" band out there. It's low-fi rock music with apathetic vocals and glimmering synths. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1AZjq82mrfg

It's weird to be posting about Ceremony in this thread, but I would hardly call their recent release hardcore punk. They've really evolved in the past years and what were once a group of dudes making really chaotic, aggressive hardcore now could easily be confused with bands like Interpol, Viet Cong or Editors. Here's one of my favorites from their new release The L-Shaped Man https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lXVTBHuKrPk

Madisen Ward and Mama Bear's album was sort of a surprise in the wrong ways. That initial live performance of theirs was amazing, but the guy's vocals are totally shot in the studio release. He keeps dipping into that midwestern warble and it's a big turnoff, not to mention you can hear him fighting for breath at multiple points in every song.

Old Town Road to EGOT

Saw Purity Ring/Braids tonight. Here's what I thought:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9h-ogENp-A8

The venue where they played is kind of notorious for having lovely mixing and that was true of this show too, no matter where I stood I couldn't see much of Purity Ring despite getting to the venue before the doors opened, multiple people ended up getting forcibly removed from the venue next to where I was standing (including Purity Ring's tour manager), when Purity Ring's tour manager got kicked out of the venue they stopped the show for like 5 or 10 straight minutes, etc.

What I could see of their light show looked awesome. If I could just see them at a different venue and forget this show ever happened, that'd rule.

Oh well, at least Braids was awesome. They only played for like half an hour or less, though. That was kind of disappointing.

Dec 30, 2011

I'm sorry to hear that. They were amazing when I saw them in Dallas. Though it was a recently redone venue so everything was brand new. I really liked Braids, their last album has been on repeat in my car since I saw them last Friday. We had this other band open for us "Born Gold" they were an electro pop sort of thing.

I am at work but the venues most recent album has plenty of pictures.

https://m.facebook.com/thebombfactorydallas

It was a 4500 person venue and by the far the largest GA show I'd ever been to. Every band kept commenting on how big of a crowd it was. Purity Ring themselves were really good. Really fun to dance to even without alcohol. Though there was a drunk woman next to me who kept grinding on me, then some guy who started smoking weed right next to me but, in light of how awesome the show was I can forgive it.

Born Gold was at my show too, and much like Purity Ring, they seemed like they would be fun to see at a different venue but the mixing was poo poo for them at the venue where I saw them. There was like barely any low end and too much high end to the point where it sounded distorted. The mix was embarrassingly bad but the band seemed like they put on a cool show.

The new Tallest Man on Earth album is really disappointing but I can't decide if that's because the songs are actually bad or the production is just that lovely. The full band sounds completely unnecessary, plastic, and lifeless like it was made completely on a computer.
