Defining crafts as rough and fine, keeping fine how it works now, making rough simply take time and a half in low light.

Breakable? Sure, but less needlessly frustrating.

On the topic of cooking things and braziers/fireplaces, I usually just make a beeline for restaurants or fast food places and then drag a stove from there out of the building and to wherever my base is (provided it isn't too far away, but I usually set up base closer to towns anyway until I can get my mobile home built).

Dragging furniture doesn't work the same way as dragging a shopping cart or wheelbarrow, it's really annoying but less annoying then scavenging 40 rocks.

On a related note I'm finding it real easy to just hop from house to house early-game after doing the minimum of clearing out zombies from the immediate area. Once the general area is clear I can just hop in any house and sleep in relative safety simply by closing the curtains. In the older versions a zom/bear would smash their way in half the time, sometimes even if you boarded up the windows, and a basement was practically a necessity for any extended period of peace. Nowadays for a regular base I barely even need to do any fortifying, often not bothering to board up all the windows.

Maybe wandering hordes might make it more of an issue but apparently those are still buggy.

I keep hearing that the cudgel is the best starter weapon because of the stun, but how often does it stun? I tend to go out with the makeshift crowbar, as the slightly higher speed makes the attack-retreat dance possible for some of the faster starting zombies (in particular the various breeds of zombified dogs, and the feral hunter), while the cudgel would be reliant on stuns or the terrain.

It's not just the stun, the cudgel has a wide range of special attacks which means that almost every attack will either be particularly fast, a solid block, particularly strong, or otherwise.

Essentially the special attacks far outclass the base stats of a weapon, which is part of what makes a good sword so much better than other weapons.

Soooo does the atomic lamp, or any of the atomic items for that matter, leak out radiation in close proximity to itself? Because I've been getting mysterious increases to my dosage as time progresses and I haven't been anywhere near any of the radiation sites.

If so, it is a shame because I liked not having to worry about fueling light sources or making a good cup of coffee in the morning with the right amount of fizz.

I had my own Dude moment. I fat fingered and accidentally set a pile of rags on fire in my base, queue me frantically flaying around picking up flaming rags, and dumping whatever liquids I had in my inventory, mostly beer, on the flames to keep it under control. Amazingly it worked.

Little later I was strolling through town playing my Ukulele when an NPC tried to get me to drop it because I wandered to close to her house. I complied, then ran back and grabbed it and started playing again right outside her window, which prompted a gun fight. Some people just can't handle the island rhythm.

At either 3 bashing/2 fab or 2 bashing/3 fab - I can't remember - you can make a quarterstaff with some two-by-fours and leather, too. I don't think it stunlocks as effectively, but it does plenty damage and is also fast as poo poo. It's great against shock-type zombies, too.

Hello yes I heard there was a lovely trainwreck here and...

Plastic chunks, if you're sure you have all the funnels you might want while on long trips away from the river. As for the gallon jugs of milk I personally like them for being able to lug half a toilet's worth of water about in the time before you're swimming in containers and have the skill to make cooler ones - after that point spare gallon jugs are nice for plastic jerrycans, or if you have plenty of those they also are good for plastic chunks.

hopefully you know to do this, but you can Unload gallon jugs of milk to make them empty gallon jugs. if you want to not leave a ton of milk on the floor, you can dump it outside in the grass, use a mop afterwards or just stand over a sink while you do it

Oh, if you have a river, funnels aren't really all that critical. If I have a spawn that doesn't have easy access to water (most of them), I get every plastic bottle and every gallon jug I can by hook or by crook, turn all the bottles into funnels, and have just huge water-gathering arrays outside. Spring rains don't last forever.

In a not-too-long ago playthrough, I managed to find a 55-gallon drum outside a Home Depot and put a funnel in it. It turns out, you can't, like, pump or siphon water out of those. So if you want to put that water into another container, you get to pick up a 450-lb 55-gallon drum full of water and pour it carefully into tiny, tiny bottles while your skeleton slowly pulverizes. Alternatively, you can just cook from it to get clean water, but I refused on the grounds that the former was funnier and did that. The jerry can for fuel is a good idea, too.

If you have the skill to chemistry it up together you can actually cook the rotten milk itself into a bunch of plastic chunks. Barring that if you get ahold of one early on, it's a convenient way to hold a lot of liquid without managing umpteen bottles so dumping the milk and using it as a canteen or small storage is pretty handy, and you can use it in recipes to make other stuff as mentioned earlier.

Steel jerrycans are pretty easy to make and strike a nice balance between holding amount versus transportability. One or two filled with salt water is more than enough for a ton of chemistry experiments and food cooking. They also are really good to stick under a funnel for freshwater. The only other things I'd consider putting under a rain funnel unless I was desperate are a plastic jerrycan or one of those larger clay jugs, which needs more stuff like a charcoal kiln and cooking oil/fats to make.

I generally use gallon jugs as day-to-day clean water carrying while out and about, since it's good for a couple-few days. When things are going well and I'm stocked on food, I like to cook as many jugs of clean water as I can and just keep them in a gigantic pile in my shelter.. You can get hurt or sick really easily in CDDA and being well-stocked when you can't do much can be the difference between life and death.

I like to use empty gallon jugs for storing cooked liquids like herbal tea, saves messing around with multiple bottles and adding just one unit to a nearly full jug gives the whole thing the (Hot) property.

55 gallon drums are literally too big to fit into those, maybe if you had a cargo unit from a huge truck modded onto a shopping cart it would work but not a standard model.

e: volume of a 55 gallon drum is 825, standard shopping cart holds 400

I would probably make a bunch of steel jerrycans, unload the water into those, and then spend the rest of the day reading books as my skeleton readjusts itself.

Steel Jerrycans being the best water carrying device is furthered by being just the right size to be completely purified with a water purifier, particularly the convenient foodco kitchen thingy. One of my latest games I built one so fast I used it to purify pool water every other day instead of setting up a mass water storage.

e: Also as far as water purifying goes I think it's kind of funnily odd how you can head down into the sewers or a waste processing facility and fill something with raw sewage and then run it through the purifier or boil it over a fire and it's totally good to drink. :zombie:

The real best way to get water from a 55 gallon drum is to use / and the easily overlooked 'c' to look inside the drum and move the water from there. I don't know that there's many other uses for it but that one is certainly worth the trouble to remember if you prefer not to have to fold your skeleton.

Finally managed a breakout on a character. For starters, yeah this cudgel is drat nice! Anyways, got lucky and found a few useful things, and now I'm zipping down streets on rollblades, hauling wheelbarrels full of loot and wearing leather reinforced clothing with my trenchcoat also having kevlar lining. Managed to find a motorcycle with sidecar in decent condition, so I gassed it up and brought it back to my shelter as an option.

Now if I could only find some guns, so far all I got is a sawn off shotgun* and a Ruger 10/22 and not a bit of ammo, though I have a bullet press and a puller, so I could try to learn to make ammo I guess! I did raid a library for a ton of books.

* This shotgun was nearly the end of my run. Walked into a boarded up house and BLAMMO, blasted in the chest by it. Thankfully I had found a military vest with kevlar plate inserts a few hours early and was wearing it, still nearly killed me. I ran away toot sweet and proceeded to apply a ton of bandages. Vest was all hosed up and unfortunately I was an idiot and disassembled it, thinking I could repair it with the plates removed. Ended up ruining the whole thing. Used the kevlar scraps to reinforce my trenchcoat.

I've got a lot of food, know where to get more, and have a river nearby I can access for water to purify. I should probably just start digging into all those books. That said, I recovered a solar panel from a garage. Would it be possible to find a batter and set up my various utility stuff in my shelter (water purifier, mess kit, lantern, etc) to operate off a storage battery that I recharge during the day? I got a decent supply of batteries, but not THAT many.

By the time you can do that you're probably swimming in plastic crap you can salvage though. It's nice later, sure, but for a fresh character with no skills the spare gallon jug wins hands down as with all the plastic clothes its possible to find the lost chunks aren't exactly going to be felt later.

Ok, I roller-derbied into town and looted a few solar panels and storage batteries and cases from some solar cars. Even got a power converter and some copper wire from a power station for good measure. How do I build a little solar power farm at my Evac Shelter? Do I need to build them as "Vehicles"? And is there a way I can use this to generate batteries or wire my appliances into a storage battery instead of little batteries?

It's all done as a vehicle. Build a vehicle with solar panels and batteries, the batteries will slowly charge if the vehicle is outside and the weather is sunny.
You'll need specialised tools to get that power back out. A Vehicle Welding Rig can be installed and will let you weld/solder using the vehicle's power. An RV Kitchen will let you cook. FoodCo lets you purify/dehydrate/reload. A vehicular electric forge lets you forge. Etc.

Yup! You start building the vehicle by going into the construction menu and near the bottom it has something like "start vehicle construction". If you have a welder, I'd suggest gathering a bunch of pipes, they're easy to lug around and can be used directly to make some kind of light framework. If not, light/regular wooden frames are probably best. Then you just weld/duct tape on some solar panels and storage batteries and whatever useful tools you can find (floodlights, kitchens/fridges from RVs, water tanks, vehicle welding rigs, etc). Those draw from vehicle power, and with probably a half dozen solar panels you'll be kosher. Probably the most basic variant is finding a solar car in decent condition so you can use the dome lights to craft.

There's a recharging station you can make eventually, but the skill requirements are pretty high and the books for it are pretty rare. If you do get it, you can mod your tools to work ONLY off recharge power, and you recharge by leaving them in the vehicle container that has a recharger attached. It's really not all that useful, because by the time you get there you'll probably have a bunch of CBMs and thousands of spare batteries.

Admiral Funk

Please send them a very large crate marked "SCIENCE. PROBABLY DANGEROUS. BUT VERY SCIENTIFIC. YES."
You can also build a recharging station but you need to mod any of your tools you want to recharge to work with it. I'm pretty sure that rechargable tools have a lot less capacity as well.

Edit: Beaten.
