At some venues, there can be a good 20 feet or so from the top of the stage to the floor of the basement below. Especially if set pieces can be stored and then raised to the stage, rather than lowered via a fly system.

This poo poo happened to me when I was a kid. Got a toy helicopter for my birthday that flew off a stand when you pulled a cord. I waited for all the birthday guests to leave and stood on the back steps with my new favourite toy. Gave the cord a rip and it went up, up, then straight down a drain pipe. Part of me died that day.
