Fallout 3 is a veritable smorgasbord, every possible variation of a subway tunnel with feral ghouls you could ever want to explore in every direction as far as the eye reaches. *kisses fingertips* Magnifique.

Are any of the Bethesda games all that long if you just blitz the main quest line?

Well at least in Fallout 3, at the start, it's more easy to just wander in whatever direction I like after I leave the vault.

In NV you kinda have to take the Primm -> Mojave Outpost -> Nelson -> Novac -> Boulder City path to avoid the other rape zones full of Cazadores and Deathclaws

People keep saying this, but my NV games start off by grabbing a shovel, climbing the left ridge to Chance's grave, then hopping down and running through the canyon. At most I get stung once before the Cazador leashes. No stealth, no Stealth Boy, no modded sprint (I only use JSawyer). If this is terrible forced railroading, Obsidian failed spectacularly.

It's easy to avoid the danger if you know where to go and that you can outrun the obstacles; it's an effective deterrent for a new player who doesn't know either of those things. It's not very strict railroading, but it pushes the player in the direction of the story quite effectively.

Unlike FO3 which seems to try its best to hide Megaton from the player, instead sending him on a journey into the middle of nowhere, without a single clue.

I had the same experience with the 188 trading post. I finally wandered over there about two thirds of the way through the game and there were all these interesting people I'd never talked to, including this one chick in an ugly gray robe. We were getting along great until she asked me if I'd heard of the "Brotherhood of Steel" and I had to explain that, see, actually I'd systematically slaughtered them after the fuckers put an explosive collar on me. Then she freaked out and started punching me so I had to blow her head off with a hunting revolver.

Boulder city is on the main questline track if you actually follow it. The Khans there are one of the Benny breadcrumbs you are following and your favorite robot buddy is there waiting for you like at every one of the quest points.

And if you follow that breadcrumb 188 is pretty hard to miss.

Can't really blame ya for seeing Vegas and heading there like a moth to a flame tho.

The answer is take a proton axe or laer which both do hidden extra damage to BigMt's robot enemies.

You can hit one with that stun effect and then grab a proton axe and start swinging like mad if you wanna complicate the really simple "axe -> face" process.

Proton Axe is probably my favorite melee weapon just because it's a Wasteland reference. Any problems you have in OWB is easily solved by using that weapon.

I usually go Goodsprings > Sloan > Neil's Shack, then through the bear trap and Indiana Jones boulder path through Black Mountain to the north, then you end up right in front of REPCONN HQ and can hit the Strip at level 1 with enough money and the ability to pass a 50 Speech check with Mick.

Started a new play through, and went through Primm, and I don't think I did the quest "right."

I talked to the NCR folks and then kind of ran around and blew up powder gangers and rescued Deputy Beagle without ever triggering a quest marker. Did I miss something or somebody to talk to? I played the game at launch but yeah, obviously that was a while ago.

There's other shortcuts, like Black Mountain and Hidden Valley. You just won't know about them on your first playthrough unless you explore off the beaten path, so you're condition to just follow the road and quest markers.

Did you go into the Vikki and Vance casino across from the Bison Steve? Talking to folks in there should get the quest started.

edit -- I literally did this quest over the weekend and almost forgot to head in there myself.

Don't even need the money and speech skill if you can find a dead ncr dude (not hard) and take his uniform. Then you can take the monorail right on in to Vegas.

Which is more fun, melee or unarmed? I can't decide between the two, and there's enough perk differences (especially for unarmed) that I don't really care to try using both at once.

"Fun" here being such things as ragdolling enemies and general goofiness stuff.

True, there's probably a spare armor set in McCarran. Although, I typically like to have the Naughty Nightwear early, so that has me leaning towards the forged passport route.

Megadong: If you're going for goof factor, Unarmed has some cool special moves you can learn.

Melee has the protonic inversal axe, protonic inversal throwing axes, rippers, cosmic knifes, Gehenna, the katana, and the bumper sword. Unarmed has the fist of rawr, the mantis king, she's embrace....

Honestly I think melee wins out. It's more practical, it's got a bigger variety of weapons some of which are really cool, you can find good and unique ones early on in the game, also melee gives you ranged options(if limited in use because of supply) and unarmed doesn't.

On the other hand unarmed lets you uppercut deathclaws and legionnaires which is awesome, but I'll say that the novelty does wear off eventually.

It was fun. It was very challenging but winning felt awesome. You want to win, don't you?

Also don't lug around an automatic rifle and holorifle that you can't use because you don't have the strength and energy weapons skill for them and you'll be fine.
