Yup. Focus Mode actually sends out the Youkai member of the team to fight instead of the human member.

What? No. Focus and Swap are two different commands. It doesn't require a human-youkai pair either. It's a very generic partner system.

Not the strongest, but the cutest.
So I have a question regarding teams. Normally in Super Robot Wars, when it features a Squad system, whenever a unit from your squad is shot down and the other squaddie is still alive, then the squaddie/s are left on the map. Actually this is confusing so let me get to the point.

I don't know if this has been explained or not, or if it is not shown well, but whenever Blitz mentions that one of the squaddies, say Shou or Sanae, get shot down then both members of the team are rendered incapable of battle.

Point is: if one person of the squad dies in this game, does the entire squad go down as well?

No the other person in the squad lives. If the three fairies or other combining units get shot down then all three go down though.

I was planning to get this up three hours ago, but then food poisoning set in.

Whenever a character is forced, whatever team they're in is broken up. I think you used to not even be able to give them a partner too, or maybe that was just 40.

Also I screwed up and forgot Marisa was forced, so there was an extra 2.5 leftover. I used the extra space to bring in Kanako instead of Komachi like SyntheticPolygon originally wanted and to put the Oshirasama on Suwako.

Mima and Yuuka may be leaving after IN, but that's no reason not to upgrade them. Yuuka benefits from the FMW E Sakuya Route clear data bonus, incidentally.

I recently found out that FMW3 added a second Revenge mechanic: if a Support Defender is shot down, and they had a friendship with the surviving unit, the ensuing counterattack does boosted damage proportional to the friendship level. I think lowest was x1.2 and highest x1.7? Since the highest friendship a single pair can have in this game is level 6, I would assume the multiplier goes up by 0.1 for every level.

Anyway I was considering giving Alice Support Defend so Marisa could get in on that x1.4 damage, but that would be silly. Especially when she's so close to her second level of Predict.

Kurumi starts with enough PP to learn Ignore Size. That's really the only thing she needs so I pumped the rest into her Ranged stat.

The way pumping stats work is that every five points the amount of PP needed to increase the stat rises. For Melee/Range/Accuracy/Evasion it constantly goes up by 10, while for Skill and Defense it starts at 20 and keeps going up by 15.

This basically means I can blow 100 PP to get a quick +5 to a character's main attack stat and either accuracy or evasion. Anything after that is either for characters who have nothing else they want, or characters who already got everything and wreak enough havoc to get a steady source of PP (*cough* Magic Team *cough*).

Fun Fact: This game does not cap stats at 400. If there is a cap, it's probably 2^64 or whatever the maximum value of doubles were.

Oh and Yuuka comes with a Sunflower so even the people who didn't go through that bullshit in the first game can get one.

This level of zoom doesn't show off the entire map, but at least you can actually see the units.

Thanks to the lose condition, the best way to handle the beginning of this chapter is

to have everyone hide north like a coward. The Prismrivers can theoretically take on the enemy grunts even completely unupgraded, but it's not worth the risk.

A cutscene starts on the third player phase.

Hmm, there's something missing when it's just us.

Yeah. Our only audience is spoiling for a fight!

No, I was out looking for Reimu's group. But I got caught in birdlime before I could find them.

Too bad, we could've used the backup!

Music: Fantasy Maidens Appear!

Player reinforcements!

This time you guys got four new named pairs. Suwako and Nitori are Aquatic Impact, Elly and Kurumi are the Fantasy Servant Team, Yuuka and Wriggle are Flower and Bug, and Luna and Star are Moonlight and Starlight.

I knew I recognized this music! It's the Prismriver Ensemble!

It would never escape the ears of die-hard fans like us!

Hey, it's those humans again. And Miss Yasaka and Miss Moriya...

And Sunny, and some bug I don't know!

Hey, is that Lily?! I thought you only showed up for spring!

The night and the moon are acting all funny, so I went out to look into it.

That makes sense. Fairies would be closely in tune with changes in nature.

It's good to see you're not out of sorts like last time.

Are you friends of the fairy? If you are, then save me!

What's with that pit? I think there's a rabbit fussing inside of it.

Prismriver sisters, would you mind explaining this?

There's not much for us to explain. We were just throwing a concert!

All we know is that the rabbit over there is targeting the rabbit over here.

Maybe it's connected to the incident, somehow.

(Ugh. This is turning into a real headache. I'll have to talk my way out of this now...)

Hey, if you're looking into the night thing, I've got a tip for you.

The night thing? Who are you, anyway?

I'm the senior youkai rabbit. I know more about this area than anybunny.

I see. In that case, by all means. Is there anything you know about this incident?

Oh, tons. According to my rabbit minions... the real culprit making the night last so long is in that devil mansion way off thataway!

Wait, devil mansion...?!

Yeah, a vampire lives there, and she's stretching out the night to try and conquer Gensokyo. I hear that whole brouhaha last summer was totally her fault, too. You'd better go exterminate her!

...A clever lie, coming from a rabbit.

It might have even worked, if we weren't here.

Huh? What are you talking about?

Nice try. That vampire's staff is right here with us!

Surely you don't believe you could fool us this late in the game.

Hoo boy, I wasn't expecting you guys to be like, friends and stuff.

Granted, it wouldn't be terribly surprising, coming from Remilia.

But at least we know this rabbit's up to no good now.

(The humans and fairies are one thing, but they've got some heavyweight youkai there. I'll have to give up on the rabbit for now and lead 'em around some.)

quote:

Victory: Defeat Tewi.

Music: Our Hearts Still Shine Brightly

Since you guys gave me Sunny alone and Luna and Star on a single team, I could form the Three Fairies. They proceeded to whiff a 89%.

Mima had no such issues. Oh yeah, I also learned that Support Attack's penalty to damage is inversely proportional to Cost. So as a 3.5, Mima is seeing the lowest damage reduction. And she's L so she's getting a Size bonus to boot.

There are a bunch of enemies up north, so that's where Magic Team will be going.

Aquatic Impact went up to follow them, but it turns out that even after being in two games Nitori doesn't have 50 kills yet. So she can't use her team attack by default. :geno:

Not that Suwako cares with the Oshirasama on. Speaking of that, its effect was changed for FMW3: aside from buffing base damage, now it also slightly decreases the damage penalty on Team Attacks. Both of these buffs vary depending on the character's original cost, with the damage buff being inversely proportional (1.5's get +350, 2.5s and higher get +250) and the penalty reduction being just proportional (2.0s and under do 0.05% more damage, and 2.5 and higher do 0.1% more).

Down below, Wriggle embraces her purpose in life for this chapter: casting Accel on Yuuka.

My happy sound's just rushing out!

And further up north are the initial four characters, who all just got +5 to Power thanks to Merlin's MAP.

This is my sound!

Which clears the way for Lyrica, whose own MAP buffs the Hit/Evade of allies in a selected cross-shaped area.

And I guess Lunasa has her Power debuffing MAP, but it's not very useful.

Mima doesn't even have to defend or cast Guard to make her barrier work.

Just like how the Three Fairies have S-Formation as a combination attack while separated and a regular move while combined, the Prismrivers can use Prism Concerto even uncombined.

Enemies senselessly suiciding into Magic Team never gets old. Though Alice isn't Reimu, so bosses can usually get a non-zero hit rate on her. Good thing Marisa has boss duty!

Uh, okay then.

Really not the best idea.

If you're wondering how Yuuka already has enough Power to use Master Spark, it's because I had her cast Drive first thing. She can usually rely on her Double Image or Shield Defense to tank for her, so all she really needs her SP for is Strike. One Drive won't hurt too much.

I meant to ask you earlier. What's the Prismriver Ensemble doing here?

Oh yeah, I never asked that, either.

Well, we were in the middle of throwing a concert.

The night was lasting a while, so we came up with a surprise concert plan.

We're going to have a rock music countdown festival that lasts until the sun comes up. We called it Rising Sun!

Yeah, that's the kind of spur-of-the-moment excitement you guys are known for!

Can you really keep it up, though? This countdown might never end.

Never...?

There's an incident going on that's keeping the night from ending. Kanako finally got out of the house for once to resolve it!

...That was uncalled for.

Uh-oh. If we keep going nonstop and dawn never comes...

Our audience will be completely worn out. It'll probably mess with our popularity.

In that case, you should help us!

Sure, why not? Sis, we could do the thing!

Yeah, our super specialty!

Okay, sure. We've worked up enough excitement for it.

Merlin, Lyrica, get close. It's ensemble time.

So now the Prismrivers can combine.

There, now I'm feeling warmed up!

The tempo's just perfect!

What is this? Are you gonna make a human pyramid or something?

Bzzt. Close, but not even close!

Fairy trio, watch and learn!

Ooh, I could never forget this...!

It's time for our ensemble performance!

Music: The Netherworld's Prism Phantoms

*squealing* This is the Prisms at their bests! With their three hearts combined as one, their sound and appeal are over three times as great!

...Elly's been very excited over this. Is there a reason behind that?

I guess we were the only ones that missed out last time. Ever since she went to a recent show of theirs, she's been a huge fan.

We're concert buddies, too.

It's nice enough music, I suppose...

She won't stop raving about them to me and Yuuka. It's gotten kind of annoying, actually.

She keeps giving us band merchandise...

Sunny, we can't let them outshine us!

Of course not! Put some spirit into this! We can take 'em on anytime!

Okay, then. Spirit, spirit, spirit!

The Prismrivers rule. Unlike the Three Fairies they're designed like a regular combining Super Robot, so they've got a host of useful spirits and strong attacks. They're also packing Synchronize, which is basically the Elements System; at 120 Power, all of Lunasa's stats are set to the highest value among all three sisters. It doesn't count stat boosts though, so I can't pretend this is SRW Z.

Where the Prismrivers really shine, though, is that they can split up and rejoin as many times as they want as long as Lunasa has her action. The Three Fairies can do this too, but Luna and Star can't do much beyond provide slight buffs. Merlin and Lyrica? I already showed you their MAPs. Only thing to keep in mind is that the MP of the combined form is the average of all three sisters upon combining, so if I spam MAPs too much I won't get as much done with the main form. You know, if I didn't bring any MP renewers at all for some reason.

...Though I get the feeling that might happen in this playthrough.

This trio has much less spirit overlap than the Three Fairies. In general, Lunasa provides Fury and Grit, Merlin casts Strike and Guard, and Lyrica uses Focus and Alert.

Getting back to the chapter, Kanako bemoans not having Hit and Away

because it means she's stuck way in the back if she wants to use her stronger moves.

Music: Our Hearts Still Shine Brightly

I was kind of tempted to make every song this chapter to be either the Prismrivers' or the Three Fairies' theme, but I probably shouldn't.

Rabbits are annoying because they're usually grounded. And since the Bamboo Forest of the Lost is covered in, well, bamboo, they usually have a +15% to defense. Add that to their -20% damage danmaku field effect, and they get surprisingly tanky.

More importantly, upon becoming a player unit Wriggle got a new attack.

Music: -Fixed Star- Twinkling Rigel

It rules.

Oh look, it's one of those bulkier turret type enemies.

:getout:

I seriously thought Magic Team had a love bonus (buffs damage instead of hit/evade) the first time I played this game, they just do so much damage.

The other annoying thing about rabbits is that every single one of them has both Support Attack and Support Defend.

Not that it matters to me since I've got Support Attack on just about everyone too.

Most of the enemies have been cleaned up by turn 5, so time to deal with Tewi.

Who is the first boss with Special Resistance. It makes her immune to the Pressure spirit as well as some of the sillier personal skills, and makes it so her Power can't drop below 100.

She has her own gimmick too; as long as any enemy is in her danmaku field, she can force them to Support Defend for her.

But that just means I have to kill them first.

Gah, what's someone like you doing with humans?!

That's a nasty remark to make when you see someone's face. Are you going to try another one of those adorable little lies on me?

Oh, not in the least! The less I have to do with you, the better.

What a good liar you are. All right, I'll play with you.

Ack, I was afraid you'd be a headache to deal with!

Music: Pounded Lies and Mochi in the Moonlit Night

Oh that's right, Yuuka's Flower Shot makes flowers spring up if the enemy is on the ground.

Also unless I somehow get Tewi to exhaust all 40 shots of Bare White Rabbit of Inaba, I can't really record an all attacks video. That'll have to wait till she joins, which is a long time away.

A fight among rabbits? There's gotta be more to this than meets the eye.

There's nothing to it at all. It's got nothing to do with any incidents.

Oh, come on. Even I'm not that stupid. That was an obvious lie. I can tell, cause you scratch your nose when you lie.

Ack, really?!

Hah, I lied! You fell for it!

Kind of a shame since she has some neat attacks. But Reisen has similar problems so I guess it's only fitting.

This is the one time I should be grateful to you. You made it so I got to see the Prisms in action!

Please, you're making me blush. I just did what I could, is all. If you really wanna show your gratitude, you can pay this bill.

A finder's fee?! Yikes, it's a rough world in rabbit land!

I wanted to see if Floor Tiles pierced Special Resistance, and turns out they do. That could come in handy.

Now then, who needs experience the most... oh, right.

It's not right to mix fact and fiction!

Like I'm gonna sit here listening to a lecture from a junior kappa. Don't you ever hide things when it's more convenient that way?

Well, yeah... There was this one time I messed with an experimental gadget of Marisa's, and I may have, uh, blown it up...

I was kind of worried Tewi would trigger Random Dodge. Her PS doubles the activation rate.

But nope, Nitori's caught up now.

Grr, these are some pretty tough humans.

Wow! You can do it, humans!

I don't know how I feel about getting cheered on by a complete stranger...

Yeah, this rabbit is nothing to you guys. Just ignore her. If I can nab her, that's all I want outta this.

You just tried to tell us a baldfaced lie.

That was just an unfortunate misunderstanding. How about some negotiation, then?

Hand over the rabbit, and I'll tell you the truth about this incident. That's a win-win. Then both sides are happy, right?

I-I'm a bargaining tool now?!

Indeed, I care nothing for the fate of that rabbit.

Surely you wouldn't be so cruel!

Yeah! Don't you pity Rabbit!?

Lady Mima, times like this call for more greed.

How about we beat you up? Then we get the rabbit and our info. That's a real win-win!

Only for your side!

You're pretty capable, Marisa.

Of course I am. This is how I roll.

Keep watching, Lady Mima. I'll show you my best!

Your best, hm... Very well. Show me.

Man, you guys don't know how to listen to your elders. Fine, then I'll prank you with both truth and lies!

quote:

Ancient Duper

Ancient Duper's effect is weird. Basically the screen is divided into two halves that intersect on Tewi's row. Tewi will pick a half, and then debuff the Power of everyone in it by 50. Or if I'm lucky, buff the Power, but that's rare.

The bonus wants me to wait till turn 3 to capture it, with the idea being that by then it'll be harder to beat her with my weakened units.

You picked the wrong mistress to lie about!

Lemme guess, you must be a youkai from the devil mansion. I can't believe that place even has a Chinese youkai. What a mishmash!

But I can just cripple Tewi on the first turn and then wait.

By the way, if Ancient Duper misses the shark Tewi summons eats her instead. :v:

Maybe it's because I only just got back to Gensokyo... But even little youkai like you seem to catch my interest more than usual.

As I should! I'm pretty interesting, I'll have you know. And if you wanna see someone even more interesting, head into the forest over there.

Sorry, but you're already shown your true face.

That should do it.

She picked the bottom half first.

Alright then, next time it's the top that'll be dangerous! ...Maybe.

For the second turn onwards, Tewi gives a warning which side she'll pick next.

Meiling's the next unit on the Cheer train.

:toot:

Tewi drops a Four-leaf Clover, which increases the amount of Points acquired after kills.

I guess trickery's impossible with this many people...

You've got spirit. You just need to watch out for tunnel vision.

Let's capture her now, while we can.

On it! I've got this!

Guess I'll have to use my last resort...!

My master's specially made acute lachrymal potion!

Marisa posted:

Heh, heh, heh. That's what you get for assuming you've won.

I'll accept my loss gracefully for now, but I'm coming to get that rabbit one way or another!

Argh, I can't believe she had a drug that even works on youkai...!

Tewi scampers off.

The smoke's disappearing.

But she made a clean getaway!

That was embarrassing. I was hardly expecting her to have THAT.

I think our opposition is prepared for a fight.

You gotta be kidding! I was this close to capturing her! Now I've made a fool out of myself in front of Lady Mima.

...

The way she was acting, she has to be part of this incident. Along with that rabbit she was hung up over...

*cough* *cough* The gas is still down in here...

...Hm?

I'm gonna take a wild guess and say they're gonna bring you along for the ride.

Please, don't be too rough with her!

We know. C'mon, Prismrivers, you can join us too!

I got a Hourai Doll shot down while trying to record Tewi's attacks before I realized it wasn't feasible.

------

Hey, Alice. Gimme a doll real quick.

Certainly, but what for?

Heheheh. If you fix it up like this... Ta-dah! It's me and Dai!

Goodness, that's very clever. What next?

...

Yes, that Hakkero is the very symbol of the way you do things. If you want to advance any further, you have to make a choice.

What choice?

Marisa, cast away your Hakkero. And then, come back to me.

------

Lily White
Changes: She has a new attack.
New Spirits: Trust, Accel, Cheer

Lily actually has Trust now, so she's no longer utterly outclassed by Dai on the healing front. She's still outclassed though.
At least she kept her MAP!

Lunasa Prismriver
Personality: Calm (Hit: +2, Kill: +3, Evade: +2, Graze: +1)
Character Skill: Musician (all MP costs -20%. Stacks with MP Save), Combine, Synchronize (while combined and over 120 Power, Lunasa's stats are set to the highest value among all three sisters)
Personal Skills: Depressing Song (attacked enemies lose 2 Power), Excellent Technique (+20 Skill), Ensemble Leader (when Synchronize activates, +10 to all stats), Phantom Ensemble (increases Lunasa's friendship with her sisters)
Spirits: Daunt, Sense, Gain, Grit, Fury

Lunasa's Power reduction gimmick isn't all that useful as a MAP, but when you start using it with Support Attacks it gets pretty crazy. She's not really that good as a solo unit, but once combined she really starts to shine. Honestly, the Prismrivers are probably the outright best character in the game.
Rumia is supposed to have a similar PS to Depressing Song, but for some reason it's still dummied out.

Merlin Prismriver
Personality: Easy-going (Hit: +1, Kill: +4, Get Hit: +1, Evade: +2, Ally Killed: +1, Graze: +1)
Character Skill: Musician
Personal Skills: Happiness Shower (at the start of a turn, all allies around Merlin gain +2 Power), High Tension (gain +1 more Power from battles), Soul Go Happy (+20 to initial Power), Phantom Ensemble (increases Merlin's friendship with her sisters)
Spirits: Spirit, Strike, Guard, Bless (42), Valor (46), Rally (55)

Merlin does two things: boost everyone's Power with her MAP, and cast important spirits while combined. These are both very useful roles, so I would say Merlin is a very useful character.
When you combine her MAP with Yuyuko's Rally, you can get some crazy first turn Power levels.

Lyrica Prismriver
Personality: Cunning (Hit: +1, Kill: +4, Miss: +2, Ally Killed: +1, Graze: +1)
Character Skill: Musician
Personal Skills: Get Ready! (can Support Attack without the skill. If she does have the skill, it essentially goes up by one level), Phantom Ensemble (increases Lyrica's friendship with her sisters)
Spirits: Cheer, Alert, Trust, Focus, Luck

Lyrica is probably the blandest of the three sisters. Her MAP is okay, but nothing special, and while the free Support Attack is nice it's not like Lyrica is that strong. You pretty much bring Lyrica along just to complete the trio.
Star Sapphire is supposed to be Cunning too, but I messed up all the way back then. It's been fixed now.

Wriggle Nightbug
Personality: Strong-willed (Hit: +1, Kill: +4, Get Hit: +1, Ally Killed: +1, Graze: +1)
Character Skill: Armored Bug (once activated, gives Wriggle three 2000 HP bug shields. Kind of like a guaranteed but limited Shield Defense.)
Personal Skills: Fixed Star on Earth (the panels around unit are considered Day terrain), Armored Bug+ (raises the number of shields to 6), Enhanced Wriggle Kick (increases Wriggle Kick's base damage by 300, and its Range by 1), Insect Recon Service (the selected allied unit will essentially activate Shield Defense the next time they're attacked, limited uses), Raid (lowers Assault's SP cost to 50)
Spirits: Accel, Alert, Fury, Strike, Assault

Wriggle is... okay? She can either be thrown on the back of another team as a free Accel, or she can go around Wriggle Kicking people. Probably her biggest use is Insect Recon Service though.
I still can't believe Ibiza mixed Wild Flug for Wriggle Kick. That's the wrong song! <>

All Attacks
Battle theme: -Fleeting Flame- Firefly Soul (Stirring an Autumn Moon, Illusionary Night, Get a Dream)
Wriggle Kick theme: -Fixed Star- Twinkling Rigel (Stirring an Autumn Moon, Illusionary Night, Wild Flug)

I remember getting so excited when I first saw this chapter title. :shobon:

...I don't see any youkai in the area.

We're near the village, so they probably won't get too close.

The people of the village must be so uneasy, not knowing how much longer the night will last...

They can't be happy with the night being extended like this. Some upstart youkai might attack the village at any moment.

...? Did something just move over there?

Yes, I can feel someone's presence approaching... Although with that kind of simple-minded movement, it's probably just some kedama or something.

Enemies.

You're right, there are feral youkai!

We're heading right for them, but... what should we do?

I don't feel like taking a detour. We charge right through them!

Cirno posted:

What going on? We were right at the good part, too.

See for yourself. There are youkai blocking our path.

Aren't they just kind of spacing out though?

Yeah, and they're youkai. Just pipe down and help out.

Victory: Defeat all enemies.
Defeat: Mystia, Shou, or the Palanquin Ship is defeated.

This chapter is set above some rice fields.

Now that I have Yuyuko, I can do one of my favorite NG+ only strategies.

And that would be to cast Rally,

then have her guzzle down Sakuya's Tea with the Sense of Elegance PS on to get enough SP for another Rally. Add in a Grilled Lamprey (and enough levels of SP Up), and I can get one more for a total of +15 initial Power to everyone.

With ace bonuses (which basically everyone has since again, NG+), this means everyone starts at 120 Power at minimum. This goes a long way to combating Lunatic's stronger enemies, and speeds up the chapter immensely since everyone can use their stronger moves right away. I think that's worth losing most of Yuyuko's SP.

The power buff is particularly useful for this chapter since these grunts are unnaturally strong and sturdy.

They also have some janky looking animations. I recorded all of them in the boss video, so check that out.

Their danmaku penalties stack up to pretty ridiculous heights too, so it's really important that everyone I'm moving ahead has someone covering them.

We never decided what our strongest song should be.

Maybe we should just let Mystia sing whatever she likes?

Don't get sloppy, Mystia!

I told you! I only sing when I want to sing!

Well, sure, but do you ever not want to sing? You've been singing 24-7.

Huh. Maybe you're right... In that case!

Reimu posted:

Hey, what do you think you're doing? You want to be on the front lines?
Mystia's supposed to just fly forward to some random spot, but Reimu was in the way. Which actually makes this line kind of funny.

I just feel like singing.

Bird of the night~♪ Song of the night~♪

Music: Open Human Cage

Ooh, what's this...?!

I feel so much better now... This must be the power of song!

I see. It seems her songs have the power to support her comrades. When an ally hears her song, they receive a special status enhancement.

All right! Since I'm gonna fight with my song danmaku... Be quiet and listen to my song~!

quote:

Victory: Defeat all enemies.
Defeat: Shou or the Palanquin Ship is defeated.
And to celebrate this event, I'm now allowed to let Mystia die. :v:

Mystia's gimmick is straight out of Macross 7: she has Song attacks that buff allied units. There's two versions of each song, a strong single-target one and a weaker MAP version.

The bird of the night spreads its wiiiiings~♪

The (currently) widest ranged one, and probably the most useful, is Song of the Night Sparrow, which buffs the Hit/Evade of everyone in its radius. There's also Mysterious Song (heals HP) and Howl of the Horned Owl (boosts Defense/Critical rate). All three have their own themes which will override everything if used as a single target attack and just about everything as a MAP if I recall correctly.

The range of all three of the initial songs is actually just 1-2, but Mystia has a bunch of personal skills that buffs the Range of a single song.

With that out of the way, I start cleaning up the enemies in earnest.

I end up taking out everyone but two fairies. If this was the original version of the game, that would have screwed me out of the bonus!

Aren't these fairies and kedamas acting a bit creepy?

You're right, they aren't saying a word. And they're moving oddly too.

Heh heh heh. What if a ghost is right about to pop out?

S-Stop it, Lady Yuyuko! You know I'm bad with that kind of thing...

And just as you say that, it looks like something moved over there.

No way...

Doofy ghosts!

Eeeeek! Ghosts!

It's horrible, everyone! There's a huge amount of ghosts in our way!

Um... aren't you a spirit yourself?

That has nothing to do with it! Hurry up and exterminate them!

Enemy AI absolutely despises Mystia (and other support characters) and goes for her with an unrelenting fervor. This is actually kind of abusable with Support Defenders, but I digress.

These new doofy ghosts do even more damage than the fairy or the kedama, but they're much frailer in exchange.

Since the situation at the bottom-right is about wrapped up, I have Yukari warp over Ran and Yuyuko to get ready for the final reinforcement wave.

Also I'm not sure if I mentioned this earlier, but Youmu lost her MAP.

She's really not that useful on this chapter in general since she just burns all of her SP on Focus so she can safely advance. This is probably the first major thing she's done all chapter.

Infinite Kalpas now shadows out Youmu during the explosion by the way.

I ended up finishing off all the opponents by the end of the enemy phase. Reimu hit level 35 and got the second level of Youkai Buster too.

...This isn't working. No matter what we do, it's tough to take them down.

These guys are way too strong for fairies~.

They don't say anything, so it's kind of creepy...

The ghosts have a strange way of attacking too. Did they always shoot lasers like that, or move at weird angles?

It's like someone's playing around with us. Maybe we're up against some different youkai.

...You've noticed, right Murasa?

Yeah, there aren't many people who could pull this off...

Unidentified Flying Youkai posted:

...Hehe. They're scared, they're scared.

H-Hey! Don't just reveal it right away!

?! The enemies from before look weird now...?

They're UFOs! Ghosts were really UFOs all along?! It's the discovery of the century!

Discovery of the century, you say?! This is definitely going in an article!

Huh? Wait, I'm not letting you get the drop on me!

So you know that youkai, Ichirin?

Yeah. They call her Nue Houjuu.

Wait, when you say "nue", do you mean the legendary Japanese chimera?! The one that's said to have the power to take away anything's true appearance? But I thought it was sealed away a thousand years ago...

We happened to run into each other in the Underworld. I wasn't completely sure, but it looks like she came to the surface too.

Aha! It's been a while, Minamitsu. How've you been?

Is that how you greet someone after all this time? I was even a bit worried, since we left without saying anything...

Yeah, that was pretty heartless of you. I turn my eyes away for a second and next thing I know the whole boat's gone. And even after coming all the way to the surface, I still couldn't find you.

Probably because we've been on the Youkai Mountain. They've got pretty strict security there.

Ugh, you've really been looking for me? Sorry for leaving you behind like that.

Water under the bridge. Let's just forget all that and go have some fun in the village. It's not every day that you get a night like this. Should be fun, getting to drown humans after they've been freaked out by my power. They won't know what hit 'em!

Don't be ridiculous, we're here to investigate the incident.

...Who're you? I don't know you people.

We're friends of Murasa. We're all here to resolve the incident together.

Ever since the boat came up to the surface, we play together a lot.

Friends...? Humans, with youkai?

I've heard about you from Murasa and Ichirin, Nue. I'm Shou Toramaru. I look forward to getting along with you.

They never said a word about you to me though...

...

Nue moves down a bit over a house.

Wait, Nue?

Hey, why don't you ditch those losers and hang out with me? I guarantee it'll be more fun than resolving some incident.

Cue UFOs. If any of the previous enemies were still alive by this point, they'd reveal their true forms too: fairies are green, kedamas are red, and doofy ghosts are blue.

Gah, more enemies?! A lot more!

Aren't you friends with her? Is this really okay?

...If she's going this far, there's no way we'll talk her out of it.

Humans look their best when they're wetting themselves in terror.

I am the great and terrible Nue, feared by all of Heian! Take a good look at my unidentified flying danmaku!

quote:

Victory: Defeat all enemies.
Defeat: Shou or the Palanquin Ship is defeated.
Bonus: Defeat a Red, Blue, and Green UFO in a single turn.
Originally Nue didn't spawn in new enemies, so if there weren't actually one of each UFO on the field by the time the Bonus unlocks I'm screwed out of it.

I should be able to finish the chapter with just this batch.

I'm touched! I never thought I'd meet the one behind all the UFOs! Does this mean aliens were just youkai all along too?

What were "aliens" again?

Technically it refers to anyone from a foreign country you've never seen before, but normally we use it for people from space.

Hmm. In other words, it's something unknown and unknowable. That's perfect! Fear me all you wish!

All of Nue's attacks have the exact same name and startup.

I accidentally had Sanae counter a Blue UFO with her finisher,

but that was the last color I needed so hey why not. :toot:

Nue's danmaku field effect is also obscured, but it's just HP regeneration.

Sanae posted:

...I still need more training.
Oh whoops, forgot to have Sanae cast Alert. Man, watching GB's stream while I play this game was a bad idea.

Since somebody asked, no, having the person in front die doesn't kill the person in the back too. They just become a solo character.

The game script says there's a bonus conversation spot somewhere on this chapter (with all of the characters seeing various things thanks to Nue's power), but I don't know where. Maybe that house?

Nope. Whatever, time to go beat up Nue.

Just when I thought I had a bad feeling about all this, the infamous nue shows up.

Shocking, isn't it? It's not everyday that I show my true form to a human.

Sorry, but I couldn't care less about your true form or whatever. I see a youkai, I exterminate it.

Let's get this show on the road!

Nue does crazy damage, so I need to either dodge completely with Alert or redirect damage with Support Defend. I should never just Evade, or graze damage will do that unit in.

Something that lurks in the dark, its true form unknown...

I know exactly what you mean, Yuyuko. The ingredients to a mystery stew.

Wait, you're not talking about eating me, are you?

No, Yuyuko speaks of something far less pleasant. No matter how you alter its appearance, the true nature of an object will remain unchanged.

What are you saying Yukari? I was talking about eating her.

Oh yeah, the Palanquin Ship actually got a new attack way back in 36.

Heh heh heh. Long time no see, Minamitsu.

So you came to the surface too, Nue.

...Well, I'm glad to see you again, really. Looks like you've been doing well.

I'm touched. You were really worried about me?

Of course I was. Sorry about not being able to contact you either.

...So you two really were friends with the legendary great youkai, nue. I don't suppose I could pull some strings with you and get an interview with her?

...You're unexpectedly shrewd, Akyu.

It drops an anchor on the opponent then opens fire. It's a melee attack, so it actually does good damage!

Haven't seen a youkai like you in a while. This calls for some sake, to celebrate the occasion.

Never thought I'd run into an oni here either. Honestly, I like you guys. Your kind knows that we're humanity's enemy.

Well, they're oni too, but the ones who live down there have pretty much turned their backs on humanity.

Suika had Guard cast, Berserk and the Guard skill on, and Oni. She died anyway because seriously not having Shield Defense makes a big difference.

Fun fact about Shield Defense by the way: it makes the user take 0.4 damage instead of just 0.5.

I give, I give. That was more than I expected.

And as if to mock me, Yuyuko activates Shield Defense and dies anyway.

I'm famished. I suppose I'll leave the rest to everyone else.

It was worth it though, because now Youmu's in range to take revenge.

So were those flying sweet potatoes your doing too?!

Minoriko seeing flying potatoes is in her bonus conversation.

Oh yeah, thanks for that. It was quite a sight.

Most people don't see ordinary root vegetables when I hide something's true form.

Sh-Shut up! I won't stand by while you mock my innocent love for the harvest!

After Minoriko pops her Alert anyway.

Maybe some Daunts too. And now that I think about it I have Hermit Purple.

People like you are perfect marks for my power. Like just now, when you freaked yourself out over ghosts or whatever.

Ugh. True, I may have lost my composure back there, but...

Youmu, it's time to use that. See with your mind's eye.

Of course, my mind's eye!

...?!

It's no good, Lady Yuyuko! Everyone's gone all dark and I can't see anything!

So she's just an idiot...

This is the last thing Youmu can do all chapter, but she sure made it count.

A couple more finishers later and it's almost over. If I still had Sanae alive she could end things, but nope.

Now who should I feed the kill...

What's with those weird wings...? What kind of youkai are you?

Well, what do you think? Try taking a guess.

Umm... your wings are weird, and you've got a snake wrapped around you, so... Er... no clue.

Not Chen, I just used her so the Palanquin Ship could Support Attack.

It's just amazing to be able to meet the legendary nue, in the flesh. But, is it really okay if I put your true form in an article?

No mere newspaper can shed light over my mysteries. Say whatever you want, as long as you don't show humans this form!

Same goes for Aya.

I know all about the nue. It's famous for its weird cry, right?

Yup. The mysterious call of the nue is the worst omen there is. It's far more fearsome than some mere night sparrow.

What?! Okay, that's it, we're having a chirp-off!

If I had remembered to use Hermit Purple before Border Team's attack, I'd probably be done by now. Alas.

Man, now what?

I'll just be a burden if this keeps up, so I'm heading back first.

Suck it up, Youmu.

Yeah, she's dead next turn.

Fiiiiireeeee!

Music: Anti-griddle of Anger

I didn't actually have to do that, I just need to move Mystia out of the way.

A legendary, unidentifiable youkai? Huh, you learn something new every day.

How pathetic, you've never heard of me? Humans tremble in fear just from the sound of my voice.

...Sounds like you could cause an awful lot of trouble in the Human Village. We'd better keep an eye on you.

Now to weaken Nue just enough that Reimu can finish her off.

Oh wait, not enough MP for Fantasy Seal.

Welp.

Well, if that's how it is... Don't mess around too much, okay?

I blame GB's stream for everything.

Bring it home, Murasa.

Nue drops an Autohint, which raises a character's critical rate by 15%.

So, are you satisfied?

Sorry, Nue. We just don't have time to play with you right now.

We must resolve this incident before it's too late. And then we'll revive Hijiri...

Hijiri? Minamitsu used to yammer on about her...

Yeah, you remember, our savior. We'll need to find some stuff first though, like the pagoda and the fragments of the flying silo...

Hmmm, you mean... these?

Some things sparkle around Nue.

Could those splinters really be...?!

They're fragments of the flying silo! You were holding them?!

I picked 'em up here and there when I came to the surface. These are pretty important to you, right Minamitsu? Along with that boat?

This is wonderful, Nue! Were you getting me a gift? Thank you so much! Everyone will be so happy! And then you can come with us, and-

Bleeeeeeh!

Nue bolts.

Wait, what?!

Got your hopes up? I'm not handing 'em over that easy. If you want 'em, come get 'em.

Hold on, Nue, what are you saying...?

Miss Nue, please, please hand those over!

Hmph, it's not like I care about this Hijiri person. Wasn't she supposed to be on the humans' side anyway?

We have to get those somehow...!

Shou lunges for Nue, but she dodges.

Woah, that was close!

By the way, something's been bugging me. What's your problem? The whole time Minamitsu was in the Underworld, you never even sent her a letter or anything. Get off your high horse.

That was because...

Nue posted:

Anyway, I'm not giving you the fragments!

See ya later, Minamitsu, Ichirin. Just try and catch me!

Hey, get back here!

Nue leaves.

...And there she goes.

Well, based on the direction she ran in, at least we don't have to worry about her attacking the village. So what should we do? Chase after her?

...No. Even if we chased her, I doubt we'd be able to settle this. For now, let's just turn back and think about what to do next.

Yes, you're right.

The moral of the story is to focus on the game you're playing.

------

...So, I wanna try counting it.

Sounds like fun. The next time Dai and Cirno come-

Hey, what'cha up to over here?

Ah, Cirno, perfect timing!

Yeah! Hey, could you and Dai have a conversation? Like, about anything?

Er, it's not easy to have a conversation on command.

Okay, Dai. How about our secret special training?

Oh, you mean that combination attack, Cirno?

I was never good at keeping up with you, Cirno. I know I slow you down...

That's not true! Being with you makes me super happy, Dai! We've gotta stick together, Dai!

Yeah! We can do it, Cirno!

So, what are your results?

The percentage of times they used "Dai" and "Cirno" in their conversation is... literally 100%!

You were counting that?!

Wait, whaa? How strong is 100?

I'm not sure you measure strength in percentages, Cirno.

Character Skill: Songstress (effect of songs goes up as Power increases)
Personal Skills: Bird Strike (Increases Ill-Starred Dive's base damage by 300, and its Range by 1), Open Human Cage (+1 Range to Song of the Night Sparrow), "Bye Bye, Chicken Heart" (+1 Range to Mysterious Song), Anti-Grill of Anger (+1 Range to Howl of the Horned Owl)
Spirits: Alert, Accel, Focus, Spirit, Assail, Valor (42)

The only singing unit in the game, Mystia provides a lot of services other characters do but over a wider range. You have to pick one song in particular to buff though, and usually I go with Song of the Night Sparrow. Mysterious Song is also really good though, and Howl of the Horned Owl is okay if you're up against a really tough boss. Oh and since her songs do zero damage, Valor boosts their effects instead. And apparently her Assail lasts more than one turn? Not really sure what's going on there.
Mystia is the main reason the IN portion of the OST is so long.

Also, whenever relevant could you list whichever character have friendships with each other and what the bonuses are? I noticed with the Prisimrivers they have skills that give them a friendship but it's not mentioned how strong that friendship is, And I imagine characters like Suwako and Kanako probably have a friendship as well, but nothing was mentioned for them either and i'm curious which characters ended up with friendships.

Just how many mistakes have you suffered on the way here?

An uncountable number, to be sure.
For the one person in this thread who's not already a Touhou fan, the Wriggle Kick is a reference to her appearance in the shooting game, where she suddenly drops down from the top of the screen before the battle begins. If you happen to be near the top at the time, she crashes right into you and you lose a life before the fight even starts. Thus, her most famous attack is the "Wriggle Kick", the bane of all new players. There are some other bosses who do similar things, but she's the most famous for it.

Also, Nue's power is "to hide the true form of things", but what the game doesn't clearly explain is that she doesn't control what the illusions are, people just see what they'd expect to see (because their brain fills in the gaps of "unknown flying object"). So that's why whenever people mention a type of enemy it immediately shows up. The way this ties into the "Japanese chimera" is that it's one of those monsters that's a tiger crossed with a snake crossed with a monkey crossed with whatever. So the idea is that the reason it looks so weird is that no two people are seeing the same thing and the reports are just crazy.

There's also the implication that Sanae (and the player) only sees UFOs because that's how we interpret them in the modern world. Nue doesn't actually know what a UFO or an alien is.

Speaking of bugs, for some reason my cursor got locked onto Lily White every time she did something or a new turn started. I was able to get out of it by just pressing L/R and moving to another unit, but it was weird.

Also, whenever relevant could you list whichever character have friendships with each other and what the bonuses are?

I was going to do that after the route split ends.

Forgot to say in that post I was streaming the 1.0 version of the game that has lots of bugs, some gamebreaking, some humorous, and some that just give you an unfair advantage the game can't handle.

Did you loving deploy two Reimus?!

"Just use Reimu" indeed. Now she can solo both halves of a map simultaneously.

Please tell me they share levels and EXP :allears:

Yeah they share upgrades, equipped items and exp, but once they deploy their ammo/energy/will are independent of each other. Ryza told me that he had the same glitch but got two Marisas instead. Sadly I have no idea what causes it to happen.

It was actually two Mystia's which is probably just as ridiculous. There's also another bug where moving units onto a certain spot on the reserve team would give you back the cost of that unit but not actually remove them from the active team so you could basically give yourself infinite cost.
