The move to menu-based systems was less about difficulty in entering Japanese text and more about transitioning the games to the Famicom. Early Japanese parser games took either unconverted katakana or even stayed with English two word commands, both of which were easy enough to input. I believe the pioneer of the menu system approach was Yuji Hori's The Portopia Serial Murder Case (recently Let's Played on these forums), which was a parser game when it first appeared on personal computers and converted into a menu system when it got the Famicom port that made it (and the genre) mainstream-popular.

I could swear I've read an article or something to that effect but it would have been years ago and I could very well be mistaken (or even the source incorrect to begin with). Either way Portopia did start as a home computer game. :-)

My point (?) is, up to the early 90s you get mostly command/menu-driven adventures, transitioning to the CYAO-style dominating by the mid/late 90s, but in Japan those are still referred to as "adventure games" as a broader genre.

My wife plays the poo poo out of Candy Crush, but never did the pay to win poo poo and hated the ads. I told her about 10,000,000 and YMBAB a week ago after hearing about them on a couple of podcasts, and now she has built two boats to completion and just got 11,500,000 points today. Either Gary and Kole or the Thumbs got in to the discussion of who is a "gamer" recently, and the conclusion was that casual phone gamers are engaging in the exact same hobby as the rest of us, just at a different level. After watching her torch through those two so loving quickly I have to agree.

Snail on my head ready to go.
Per the latest Abject Suffering, the series where Dr. Octopus takes over Peter Parker's body was "The Superior Spiderman". I am told that it is good.

Spiderman can be terrible, my go to is the time Spiderman sold his marriage to the devil to save 70 something Aunt May's life. This happened recently, even if it sounds like a gold or silver age plotline.

I also heartily recommend the David Letterman performance of Freaks Like Me.

Also, the dramatic reading reminded me of a podcast I've been listening to lately, called Eric and the Legion. Eric reads the Silver Age Legion of Superheroes comics in a somewhat dramatic fashion.

Hey gary and Kole, I'm wondering if you guys have seen much on Death's Gambit?
http://www.deathsgambit.com/

It's heavily inspired by Dark Souls (perhaps TOO heavily inspired*) and the play looks like a mashup of Dark Souls and Symphony of the Night.

If it's released in time, it might be something to fill in any potential gap between Bloodborne and Dark Souls 3.

*Seriously, at times, it's practically a straight-up rip-off. Here's a summary from a PS blog:

In addition, there's "Phoenix Plumes" that you use to heal yourself...and you get X uses of them in between each save point, whereupon they refill.

Still, I'm cautiously optimistic for it.

Kole/Gary, some extrasode comments, some on the extrasode content, and some I held back expecting other people to fill in for me:

- Story of Seasons is an incredibly nice title, and feels like it brings a lot of polish the series has been missing ever since the weird legal wrangling for the HM name. (Also, it is just so much better coded. God, some of the bugs later HM titles had were embarassing.) I'm early on, but it's got a lot of quality of life improvements, a town that feels more realistic, and, while I admit I've skipped a HM or two near the end, one of my favorite little details: other people in this farm town run some drat farms of their own. In fact, when your city-boy rear end gets dropped off at the game's beginning, you're staying with one of the other farmers to learn the ropes/town schedule for a couple of days.
- Whoever sent in those VN suggestions was a very, very particular kind of pervert based on which titles I recognized by name. One or two of them might make for good Abject Suffering titles, were it not for the fact that they are old games which would be a three-times cursed process to get running on modern PCs. At least one was DOS-era, for gently caress's sake.
- This one is just more a general suggestion, but at some point have you guys considered a raising sim of some sort? It mostly occurred to me because one of the VN descriptions (murder mystery at an all-girls school) reminded me of the game I'm playing at the moment, Black Closet, which is almost guaranteed to be a much less lovely version of that plot by the woman behind Long Live the Queen. But for some reason I am now imagining a Princess Maker or LLtQ or that fan-translated DS game from a few months back being subjected to the show's scrutiny.

I watched the PS stream of this and Salt & Sanctuary yesterday, and have to say they both look like they're going to scratch that Dark Souls itch. S&S looks a bit better to me, though.

Death's Gambit and Salt and Sanctuary are on the eventual list. I'm not sure how much time we'll actually have between Bloodborne and DS3 and I know we both really want to do Shadow Tower as well. It will depend! They might have to wait for between DS3 and BB2 (speculation). I know I personally won't wait that long to play Shadowtower but I did play Lords of the Fallen twice for my art.

As far as a raising sim, that's sort of a neat idea but it's such a niche genre. I have some experience with one of the Princess Maker games (I can't remember which one). We don't have our whole year planned out yet but do have our Summer more or less on lock so it'd be a while in either case.

This is a minor correction Gary, but South Park The Stick of Truth wasn't made by Bethesda at all it was a collaboration between Obsidian and the South Park studios.
The sequel was announced this last E3 and Obsidian is no longer involved, instead Ubisoft is developing it in collaboration with South Park studios.
It remains to be seen if it is nearly as excellent as its predecessor.

That seems reasonable. Normally I'm all for separating art from artist, but it's a lot more relevant when their bad politics are directly related to a clear and present problem in the same sphere they're selling their art in.

Yeah, it's a pickle. As the biggest HP Lovecraft fan I know, I struggle with this. I think I wouldn't support him if he didn't die a lonely ridiculous death well before I was born. I think deciding where you spend your money/who you support is one of the more powerful freedoms we have. So yeah, the game might be GREAT, but I just don't want to give money to that. Same with the Vanishing of Ethan Carter which bums me out because I really wanted to play that. But if I have a budget for indie titles, I'd rather my money go to good people.
