True, but at the same time it shows that Eliot has strong principals when it comes to Rapists, even overriding his own addictions.

And besides, it's not like he can't fall in later with another drug dealer who gets leverage on Elliot and holds out on his withdrawal meds demanding money/hacking services.

Well they could have left the rape part for another episode in the future. Perhaps just had her touched up for money or something. Just seemed like they closed a good opportunity for character interaction off too quickly.

I don't think it's an availability issue with Elliott, just a matter of finding a person he trusts getting the drugs for him.

I'm not sure Elliot really needs another antagonist, especially not one so disconnected from the main plot. Between Wellick/Evil Corp, abusive father figure Mr Robot, and his own brain, Elliot has more than enough problems to fill an hour of television every week.

He was whinging about getting rid of the dealer because the chick who sells Eliot drugs says there aren't any other suppliers who can get it.

The show is legitimately good (although not really your typical USA material). Haven't really seen much discussion of it here but does anyone else think they're telegraphing that F Society or at least Mr Robot not being real a bit too hard?

Just in the last episode we had

  • Slater/Darlene again not interacting with any other human beings.
  • Elliot looking at the two paintings of the same farm.
  • Elliot being comfortable with Slater's touch but nobody else's
  • Elliot needing to get high before he can 'see' F Society again

It does seem like it, but I'm not sure if that's the writers/etc being clumsy, or if they're aware and it's misdirection.

Edit: I actually just looked at it again, and Eliot's drug dealer lady looks directly at Darlene more than once when he's dropping off his dog.

The guy with the mask in the F Society video did distinctly sound like Mr. Robot (I don't think that was just in my head?), though I guess they could hand-wave that away if they really wanted to.

Yeah when Darlene pulls the fast one and jumps in the subway car to lose the guys Elliot doesn't understand if she just did that because she was being weird or she was trying to actually shake the tail and she can "see them too"

Eh, see this is the part that makes MR. Robot just like any other USA show. Like Burn Notice, there's always the villain of the week. It's ok as long as it doesn't turn the Mr. Robot storyline into a footnote at the end of every episode.

I'm just afraid it's gonna end up being repetitive like other USA shows that seemed to have promise at the beginning.

So, I'm pretty sure the only way we can figure out what is "real" with Elliot at this point is to assume that only Angela, Kayla, and his Therapist are reacting to him. Considering that they are the only characters at this point that seem to have any long term relationship with him, they at least have some metric for what is "normal" to him.

Also, I really liked the pilot, but I think this episode kinda went overboard with the "broken promises" theme. Which I guess is my only complaint about it. Still planning on seeing the entire season, just that I don't hope that they are so heavy handed in the future.

Was that scene where that fake musician dude hacks into the PC / web camera of Angela's boyfriend, the first one that was not from Elliot's point of view?

And if so, isn't that an indication that at least a serious part of this is not entirely in Elliot's mind?

Elliot so far has had nothing to do with the CD hacker guy except vicariously through his friend and her lovely boyfriend. Unless, based on how Elliot phrased his initial greeting to us, this is all being recanted to us from an Elliot in the future, I think we can trust what's going on in this side plot. But if not... literally nothing can be trusted.

Nobody move and nobody gets hurt.

Well it confirms that the Dark Army are really involved in the enterprise, but it's possible that if Elliott is imagining the rest of FSociety then he's the one who brought DA in and has just externalized that action to Mr. Robot.

Edit: As in, he's more Tyler Durden-ing the situation than hallucinating it.

I think he might have already burned that bridge no matter what. To them, you're either committed or you're not. But I'm pretty sure they're a delusion anyway, since there's no way they would keep meeting there if he had bailed. Also, why does a derelict amusement arcade have power, lights, running water, and I think I saw a working popcorn machine?

Pretty sure the city would notice a giant arcade full of games draining off the grid, though. It's not like they're just running a satellite wifi connection and the laptops.

In my expert opinion (hacker movies). Hackers always work in abandoned building, with power, mood lighting, maybe a grow op, Jolt cola machines... and nothing you say will convince me otherwise.

Stealing power isn't hard though in all seriousness. It just requires the right amount of extension leads.

Hahaha! Aw come on, I can't tell you everything right away! That would make for a boring story, don't you think?
Loving this show so far, I particularly like that they actually dealt with my main issue with the premise in episode 2, which is that everyone would have offsite backups which would make any data eradication meaningless.

This show is doing a great job with editing and cinematography. I'm loving the juxtapositions they use with advertisements and signs in the world and the usage of focus and lighting. All-around super high quality for a TV show on USA. This show had better not turn to poo poo, it has too much potential.

Also I have a feeling that drug dealer is coming back for sure.

Spergatory posted:

I just noticed the game Mr. Robot is playing in the Arcade is called "Mallard Murder," presumably to avoid copyright issues, but still uses genuine Duck Hunt sound effects and graphics. Even the font is the same.

I took that to be another one of Eliot's delusions where he replaces the name of something with a more sinister equivalent.

I HAVE THE ETIQUETTE OF STIFF AND THE PERSONALITY OF A GIANT CUNT.
I'm not sure, at this moment, if it's important to me whether the things Eliot is perceiving are real or not, and if only some of them are or if maybe he's living in a Truman Show Matrix. (The feeling I personally got is that he's actually that new CTO of ECorp Tyler-Durdening himself an Eliot, those two were uncomfortably close in that scene.) It's like... it doesn't feel important to the plot, or a plot point, so far. The story, right now, as of two episodes, is good whichever way it is. And, furthermore, there is a rich tradition of people expressing interesting points of view via mad characters (see the Victorian 'madwoman in the attic').

You'd think so, but then again a Sydney council didn't notice 50,000 litres of water going missing per month. For 18+ months. It was only uncovered when someone went to sink some house foundations and there was treated water coming in through the subterranean rock shelf.

The arcade is probably siphoning off power from the surrounding amusement park and any number of shell games are being played to cloak the theft and activity. There's probably some underpaid city worker half musing about why the loving Winder Wheel had a power spike the prior month but is being poo poo on by his bureaucratic chain of command and just decides, not my loving problem.
